01. FUTURE NOSTALGIA The title for the essay I wrote was the Value of Architecture through Time. It shows how different people from different backgrounds. Hence, I came up with the change in time as a concept with Future Nostalgia as a title for the project. The aim is to create something that would be nostalgic in a few decades. Future Nostalgia is a concept I came up with inspired by a recent album by Dua Lipa. In relation to time, Future is a period of time that is uncertain and still yet to come while nostalgia is a gist of wistful affection from the past that brings sentimental value to oneself. The combination of these two words resembles the context and the project perfectly. The Juxtaposition of the old and the new. Combining the context of the Georgian architecture and an architecture style from the 21st century, creating new meaning to the proposed area. Therefore. I’ve decided to portray the change in time and direction as an architectural concept.

The project is to design Birkenhead School of Art. I have taken my own twist inspired by the title ‘Future Nostalgia’ to create an Art school specifically focused on Digital and Emerging Arts such as VFX, Digital Art, Animation, Installations, 3D Modelling and Printing, Laser Cutting, and others. Therefore, the project would be of Birkenhead School of Digital and Emerging Arts.

SITE The site is located at the heart of Birkenhead, which is Hamilton Square. Birkenhead is located on the west opposite Liverpool, seperated by River Mersey. From Liverpool, Birkenhead could be accessed by Car, Bus, Train (Merseyrail) and Ferry. The space highlighted in white is the chosen site for my project.

EARLY SKETCHES At the beginning of the project, I studied Rem Koolhaas’ Seattle Central Library as an inspiration for it’s geometrical form and excellent building circulation. I tried creating 3D shapes from combinations of random shapes as a plan and even tried creating Hamilton Square’s plan as a 3D form. Then, I discovered that ‘zigzag’ is the best form that could explain the ‘change in time and direction’ as in native american, it represents lighting. It also means the rapid change. Therefore, I pursued with this concept throughout the project. Initlally, the idea of double height space, indoor greenery and an elongated atrium with 2 building wings were focused on.

FINALISED FORM

The building is divided into two wings which one is public (south) and the other is private (north). Inspired by Steven Holl’s Nelson Atkins Museum, the art school has two lightboxes that allows light into specific spaces harshly (south light) and diffused (north light). The building has zigzags in plan and in section (see sketches and massing model on the right).

SPACES AND ITS FUNCTIONS The main entrance is by the west side and there is another entrance by the east side of the building. The lobby and reception is located on the ground floor of the south wing which is a double height space, connecting a cafe and an indoor green space. On the north side there are lecture rooms and a computer lab. The basement is only connected to the norh wing and it is where the workshop is located. Next to the staircase of the is a void space with a glass on the roof and glass as the workshop roof to allow daylight into the workshop and althrough floors. The studios are located on the first floor of the north wing, Meanwhile, the staff offices and collaborative workspace (one of the space with a lightbox) is located on the second floor. As for the south wing, a student lounge is located on the first floor and an exhibition space (another space with a lightbox) is located on the second floor. The space is divided into two. One of which is a darker space compared to the other to exhibit artworks that require that kind of setting such as light installations. The building is well circulated as both of the wings are connected with bridges. Three bridges on the first floor and two on the second floor which both sides were connected near the staircases and the lift.

An isometric drawing of the building as a whole with its exquisite greenery on the roof, pocket greeneries and the ground floor indoor green space. The building envelope is made out of low iron u-profile glass units with translucent insulation that allows light to be diffused when entering the building. This creates a well-lit environment. At night, It would light up like a lantern. Some parts of the building is transparent such as the atrium skylight , the front face of the south wing and the south face of the indoor green space.

THE RIPPLE WEATHER OR NOT BA YEAR 3 SEMESTER 1

02. THE RIPPLE This project is about a weather station located on a man-made quarry site in Hebden Bridge. The idea is to create a place that could store water to slow the flow and help reduce the flood in Hebden Bridge whilst using the water for potable and non-potable use withing the building. The concept was ‘Tempayan’. It is a widemouthed pot, famous in South-east Asia for storing food and water. The building is also inspired by stepwells in India called the Jhalara which is a place where people store rainwater for the whole community to use.

21 Zati Mohd Jamil 2020 Portfolio

2020 Portfolio Zati Mohd Jamil 22

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT I have studied various forms of pottery and water towers that could store water. The building was first made as a half-building and half-dam. It was then developed into a building surrounding a dam, with steps inspired by the stepwells as seats for event space or an outdoor auditorium. The idea is to have water stored in the middle of the building, creating a man-made lake. The water could then be used to conduct hydroelectric electricity for the building.

23 Zati Mohd Jamil 2020 Portfolio

2020 Portfolio Zati Mohd Jamil 24

PLANS The building has three entrances; one with stairs and could be accessed by the disabled via ramp. The other two is via the hills as the hills are accessible too. The main entrance with the ramp leads to a reception, it has a lift and a staircase for access to the first floor. The first floor is a full circular plan that has a public lounge (accessible to the auditorium seats), an exhibition space, a cafe (also accessible to the auditorium seats, a pathway under a large acrylic glass to access to the lab on the ground floor. The pathway connects to a library and back to the public lounge above the reception. The top floor is circular roof pathway that overlooks the lake and the event space. A part of the auditorium seats continues from the base to the roof pathway. One of the entrances via hill leads straight to the rooftop. The other two staircases that leads to the roof has glass around it in the first floor so that the rain would not enter the building. The social space and cafe has big glass doors that are turnable.

SEASONAL FUNCTIONS The weather station works differently in different seasons. The amount of water the dam stores depends on the season. During drought season, it would be a wetland. The stage would be used often during this season for talks and events. During summer, It would store a little bit more water compared to drought, creating a low level lake and the stage is still visible and usable. In summer, the stage is often used for musical events. In Winter, the water level would be high and due to the position of the building on the high altitude, the water could be frozen. The dam could be used as an ice skating rink for the Hebden Bridge community. During flood season, the water level is at its highest. The water could be used for potable and non-potable use. It could also be used to generate electricity with the hydroelectric electric generator located in the ground floor under the cafe.

2020 Portfolio Zati Mohd Jamil 28

VISUALS AND MODELS The watercolour renders help show the value of light within the building. The lab would have a slightly lower amount of daylight on the far north side as it is under the auditorium seats and library. The library receives light from a glass floor skylight. As for the exhibition space, it has a tiny slit that allows small yet strong amount of light into the space, which helps focus on the exhibition space on the right wall. The design model is made mostly by hand but with the help of a 3D printer. I 3D printed the auditorium seats as it is impossible to create it accurately by hand. The contour was made by using an A1 laser cut machine.

DETAILS The structure is concrete frame structure with concrete piling on uneven contours to create a more stable foundation. The details shown on the left shows that the base of the dam is not covered with concrete or other materials and is instead the natural floor. There is a 4m deep concrete foundation that allows the water to be stored in the dam better even with it’s natural floor. The concrete auditorium seats are covered with 20mm slate tiles as a finish. The exterior is made out of surrounding stones that gradients into concrete as it gets to the lower level. The exterior walls have openable vents to create a better natural ventilation system.

03. COALESCENCE This project is based at the heart of Fabric District located in Islington, Liverpool. It is an urban space designed to merge both local and student community through various activities such as sports or basic skills such as cooking or gardening. The urban space includes a community activity centre (1 east), community square(1 west), a sports and fitness centre(2), a food hill (3) and pocket parks (4). The definition of coalescence is joining or merging of elements to form one mass or whole. In this case, is how the space is circular and merges together. It represents the two community that merged into one society.

35 Zati Mohd Jamil 2020 Portfolio

2020 Portfolio Zati Mohd Jamil 36

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT The main part that I mainly focused on to develop further is the sports and fitness centre. It was first made to merge into the back of a building. It was not a well-resolved space as it feels a bit isolated compared to the other spaces like the food hill. I decided to make it work as an important bit of the whole urban space. After careful thinking, I turned the facility into a community learning centre that teaches basic life skills such as gardening, cooking, yoga and barista. The income and product gained from these classes could help maintain the urban space from time to time. It also acts as a threshold for the north entrace to the urban space. The threshold went from disclosed to a more open but directed towards the main urban space.

37 Zati Mohd Jamil 2020 Portfolio

2020 Portfolio Zati Mohd Jamil 38

THE COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTRE The community learning centre is opened during the day and at night. It has various activities during different times of day. The building has an opening in the middle with trees growing through the middle. This space has ponds that help harvest water to maintain the greeneries. The urban space is underneath the building as inspired by Maggie’s Oldham. Equipped with hanging chairs and benches for people to enjoy their lunch and socialise. The building has a cafe, a fitness studio, cooking or barista learning room, a rooftop greenhouse and a gardening space on the roof.

This way the urban space as a whole is more welcoming and unique in it’s own way. It has it’s own income to help maintain the other parts of the space, so that it would be taken care of from time to time, generations by generations.

04. FEMINIST GATHERING AND KNOWLEDGE HUB The Feminist Gathering and Knowledge Hub is located by the West side of Fabric District, Islington, Liverpool. The building has an Archive, exhibition space, mini library and acts as a social space for feminist all around the world, visiting Liverpool. The archive consists of knowledge on feminism, history and art.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT The angular, sculptural building was designed based of a cuboid. It then developes slowly with angluar walls whilst applying the main concept onto the building. The concept is feminism. The triangular cutout made for the entrance of the building symbolises the stability of a women as they are independant beings. The exterior of the building is made out of reflective aluminium cladding. It’s the colour silver that represents the feminine energy. The cladding wraps the upper half of the building and the rest is concrete.

2020 Portfolio Zati Mohd Jamil 46

RESOLUTION The building divides into a public and private section. The circulation of the building is well-thought as you could move around to different places from the entrance. The ground floor is a double height space where you can see the reading room (for the archive source) and the main space in the middle atrium that acts as a social space during the day and a cinema at night that plays movies about feminism. The building has a green space that helps create a nice atmosphere. The reading room goes below the green space for another exit, that goes to a mini library and cafe under the entrance. The first floor leads to staff offices, travelling researcher’s room, digitalisation room and common space. The second floor leads to the strong room for the archive. The floors are connected by lift and stairs. The lift is most commonly used by the librarian to travel back and forth from the strong room to the reading room. The lower ground has an exhibition space made for female artists to project their works.
