Project 1 - Conceptual Design Project LJMU School of Performing Arts

“The aim of the programme is to develop a performing arts complex for Liverpool John Moores University as a flagship building accommodating drama, musical theatre, opera and pantomime. It should be developed along a conceptual basis that life is performative and that there are performative arts that enhance our understanding of that life such that we can better chose how to live our lives. The building should fully utilise the concept of motion and textual unfolding to orchestrate and display.

Concept: During the research component of the CDP Project, I came across Professor Robert Kronenburg’s book ‘This Must be the Place’. In the book Professor Kronenburg divides performing spaces into four categories. With these four categories in mind I began looking at and considering spaces myself, trying to ascertain whether Professor Kronenburg’s theory applied. Following the research component, I wanted to further look into the concept of the 4 performance spaces. This led me to the concept of designing a performing art building that included all four types of performing spaces, creating a diverse and varied range of infinitely adaptable spaces over which performers could have creative control.

Adapted Spaces. Spaces which have previously been used for another purpose, but have been adapted for performance.

Concept 1, Positivity: to design a Performing Arts School which promotes mental wellbeing by creating social spaces which integrate nature into the design. I have included a number of social spaces within the building, as well as designing heaviliy around the use of greenary and planting. Concept 2, Flexibility: to design a Performing Arts School which allows the occupant to have creative freedom over the space.

Rebecca Moorcroft 2020 Portfolio P5

The building is located on the site of the now removed Churchill Way flyovers. It is a busy area where, despite the removal of the flyover, the traffic is still heavy and often congested with flows of traffic leading into the city centre, as well as to the Kingsway tunnel. The site however is well located for a LJMU building, with the LJMU Henry Cotton Building, Sports and Exercise Science Building as well as the James Parson’s Building, all located within a two-minute walk. There are also a number of student accommodation buildings surrounding the site, which have influenced the location of the entrances to the building. Public transport to the site is readily accessible. Both underground and mainline rail links are located 0.4 miles from the site. Queens Square bus station is a 6-minute walk from the site and Elliot street bus station an 8 minute walk. Both provide bus links to regions all across Liverpool. Cycling to the site however is a problem, with a lack of cycle lanes and the main road with two carriageways running alongside the site. Pedestrian access to the site is also not ideal, because the roads in the area are busy and there are a lack of pedestrian crossings. I would therefore like to create an active travel route, incorporating cycle lanes and wide pavements, to give access to the building. I would do this by utilising the quieter road which runs to the west of the site for access.

The Breif: Following from the idea that ecological conscience and literacy should become a central tenet of design education, this brief asks to interpret climate change, interact with weather phenomena and consider how design could be embedded within a broader system. Knowing that climate is a constructed notion, how could we re-shape it and its implications for our holistic understanding of the world, our ways of building and living in it? How could we address climate change in a more encompassing way, elaborating the fundamentals of meteorology, aerography, hydrology, or even gravity?

Concept: to create a series of flood water storage pools, which will sit in the uplands of Hebden Bridge. The purpose of which will be to alleviate rain water runoff during peirods of heavy rainfall and reduce the risk of flooding to Hebden Bridge. 1. Water Storage Pools : as well as reducing the amount of rainwater directed towards Hebden Bridge, these pools are also able to generate energy from the connecting stream.

2. Topography : the second focus of this design is to create a building which works in harmony with it’s topography.

3. Harmony with nature : the third focus of my design is to create a project which not only accomodates for, but will allow the nature of the site to thrive. Introducing the greatest number of different biodiversities, through: - pond - plantation - retaining natural bog - creating "wild gardens" - disrupting the landscape as little as possible

Winter Lighting Scheme Lighting Scheme: On the north elevation of the building is a large expanse of glass. As this opening sits to the north, shading should not be required. The roof does however jut out at this point as a part of the rainwater harvesting strategy, so some shading will occur. The south and east elevations of the building sit close to the cliff face, resulting in near to no solar gains from these orientations. In order to counter this, there are two glass circulations spaces, onto which internal windows face. This allows light into some of the central spaces. The scheme also has roof openings, which also help to allow light into the darker spaces. Sensors in the roof openings will be able to automatically change the opacity of the windows depending on the requirements, as well as being able to be controlled manually. Lastly, the more functional spaces, such as the toilets and store rooms have been placed at the back of the building, where there is the least daylight.

Summer Lighting Scheme

Vegetation Scheme Part of the concept for this scheme was to reintroduce planting into the site after it was quarried, as well as to create rich a biodiversity within the area. The areas outlined in the diagram are areas in which rewilding will take place. Rewilding involves planting a mixture of local vegetation which have been outlined by biodiversity schemes such as the RHS and allowing the vegetation and wildlife to take over, as opposed to keeping the area well-groomed and ordered. Within the pool there will be oxygenating plants to keep the water healthy and allow for pond life. On the paved area surrounding the building there will be planting beds, which may grow wildflowers to draw in bees and insects, or vegetables, herbs or fruits to be used in the kitchens.

Ventilation, Heating and Cooling Scheme: The ventilation and heating of this building are both powered by a biomass boiler. This boiler sits in the middle section of the building in order to minimise the distance pipework must travel. There are three systems within the building, each of which connect back to the biomass boiler. An air supply and an exhaust run from each system into the required spaces in the building, e.g. laboratories and toilets. The demand for cooling isn’t too great in this area, so cooling will mainly rely on the opening and closing of windows to allow in cool air, as well as air conditioning units should they be required. Irrigation

Collection Water Scheme: The roof has been designed in a way to allow water to run over the three roof forms and fall into a pool at the end. This water is then stored in a water tank. This water, as well as water from the guttering is used in the building. This water is used in sinks, showers and toilets. The grey water is then reused for irrigation after being treated. Any additional demand in irrigation is supplied by the water tank. Any site stormwater runoff as well as water from the storage tank is used in the site’s raingardens and infiltration ponds.
