HYDROLOGICAL CENTRE This project is about a weather station located by the river Mersey, in festival gardens, Liverpool. My theme has been designed with the threat of flooding in mind, which is caused by climate change which creates more frequent storms, causing heavy rainfall and increased sea level, both resulting in flooding. This has undoubtedly caused fear concerning water within the city. In this project I want to explore the cycle of water to create a positive experience within the architecture changing the perspective on how water is viewed.

Site History
Festival gardens are a part of a 100-acre former landll which has been redeveloped in the 1980s to host the international garden festival. The former landll causes problems for current building developments on the site. For example, the area could never be a long-term sustainable project because of the underlying nature of the soil. This is not only because its contaminated it also does not make ideal material to build on because is not compacted enough to make solid building materials. For the soil to be useable, it would need to be mediated and repackaged, this would need to be done on site as it is illegal to take the contaminated soil off site. The area contains enough methane to provide energy to 1200 houses for 60 years. Which has been created by the waste that has been le in the ground, however this is not

In this project i want to explore the cycle of water to create a positive experience within the architecture changing the perspective on how water is viewed. The way my building incorporates water includes, ‘Rain hearing pavilion’ located in the courtyard. A water feature within the staircase, which also harvests rain water. Water used to create a path through the building, leading visitors throughout the building. Lastly water paths following through the landscape.

Plans
The building I have designed is split into 4 sections; an information centre which provides an exhibit space to highlight the importance of climate change and how are actions can impact the environment. This then leads to a café and courtyard, with a seated social area. Addition to this, laboratories on the ground floor, provide a space for sciences to research climate change, they have a separate access to the building from the public. Lastly, located on the first fall, classrooms will be used for school children to learn about climate change, it also creates an opportunity for the sciences to give lectures of their research findings.

technical note Full bleed - images right to edge of page is OK for electronic documents, but if you intend to print a hard copy you would need a specialist printer to print pages on larger sheets and then cut down. On ‘normal’ A3/A4 colour printers in uni, minimum margin that is always created is 4.2mm - of paper coloured space.

My courtyard can be accessed through the information centre, however it can be accessed from outside, by walking over stepping stones, over a shallow pool of water. This creates water patterns on the walls. Also creates views out of the courtyard over the river Meresy. Rain-hearing pavilion within my design creates a sheltered space inside the courtyard, it incorporates falling rainwater to display a screen ofwater. Visitors can feel the moisture in the air and hear the sound of rain whilst remaining dry under the canopy. My courtyard can be accessed through the information centre, however it can be accessed from outside, by walking over stepping stones, over a shallow pool of water. This creates water patterns on the walls. Also creates views out of the courtyard over the river Meresy. I have used timber batten cladding for the exterior of my building in the courtyard area because it is a natural material, and has a nice warm, comforting, and eye-catching appearance, which enhances the overall aesthetic of a building. Also, as my site is located partly within a wooded area and I wanted to keep this part of the building similar to its natural surroundings

The ‘land’ building ground floor is designed as a public realm, mainly for community use. It is a space for gathering and meeting as a pit stop for activities in the bath building. This space includes an entrance, café, and toilets. The second floor of this building is used for changing rooms to prepare bathers for their bathing journey, they would then use the bridges to access the bathing facilities. The ‘water’ building is intended to be viewed as a luxury retreat, which consists of treatment rooms, saunas, and multiple temperature pools. This is comparable to the roman way of life as the bathhouses were based around three rooms: the tepidarium (warm room), the caldarium (hot room) and the frigidarium (cold room). These three pools are located on the lower floor. This building is designed to orientate towards the views of the city landmarks and the river Mersey.
