/ THE LIVERPOOL BOTANICAL WAREHOUSE THESIS PROJECT
The Liverpool Botanical Warehouse is to be the new home of the unique restored collection of the William Roscoe collection. The original Toxeth Dock warehouse buildings will be brought back to life and given a new purpose falling in line with the rich history of Liverpool’s great heritage. The existing buildings will house a variety of new uses including an indoor constructed botanical gardens, an entertainment unit with shops, cafés & restaurants. A botanical learning centre and library which will have a strong link to the universities of Liverpool. The new site will inhabit a research centre to help find new technologies of the Botanical world, whilst also allowing for a herbarium and storage of seeds. The surrounding outdoor gardens will create a new public realm to attract people to the newly landscaped river-front on the banks of the Mersey, all of which can be accessed by the public, locally and from afar. The site will become a new hotspot of activity and interest whilst also reminding people of the history of what has been there before.
‘‘A botanic garden is an institution holding documented collections of living plants for the purposes of scientific research, conservation, display and education. We have the collection – now we need to conserve, display and educate. It’s part of our duty to the future.’’ Sarah Horton, Mr Roscoe’s Garden: A Political History

/ THE LIVERPOOL BOTANICAL WAREHOUSE THESIS PROJECT
So, is this the end? Well of course it isn’t. What happens next? Do you care? Where will Liverpool’s Botanic Collection end up? Will the public be able to share and observe these beautiful plants on a regular basis? Could Liverpool once again become famous for its orchids? The essay in Jyll Bradley’s book talks lovingly of people for whom a visit to the exotic collection was essential, a lifeline for people who basked in their visits to the glasshouses. Can we create that again? We have skilled gardeners who have lovingly, over decades, cared for and maintained these plants? Surely they deserve a proper home? A place where they can be observed, admire, loved, studied and enjoyed? And whilst this may well be the story of a garden founded by Mr Roscoe, I think it’s much more than that. It’s an internationally outstanding collection of amazing plants, with a deeply significant historical story, which demonstrates the tenacity of plant lovers and their desire to retain this collection. It’s significant.

The public realm is an important aspect to the entirety of the scheme, as the project was to not only develop and also conserve the existing warehouses and transform them into mixed use and a botanical gardens, this also spills into the external surrounding area. During the major excavation of the sit to reveal the existing dock wall to enable this to be celebrated it has not formed part of the stepped gardens which lead you to interact with the dock wall which will now be conserved and celebrated. The purposefully dissected site now allows for walk-through from the large water areas, bridging over the stepped gardens and now onto the river front creating 3 connecting points between the 3 areas of public realm.

STRUCTURAL & MATERIAL AXONOMETRIC SECTION
The Structural elements of the project are particularly important for the entire concept in conserving the existing structure. The aims of the project is to replicate the existing warehouse form to create the new structure which will become the Botanical glass house. by looking at the existing structure allowed me to design a replicating structure but out of steel with particular details to ensure that it has its own identity. Because of the glass house being very much transparent and open the majority of the structure is exposed so visually this was important to get right to ensure it not only structurally supports the proposed system but also visually looks in right, in particular to not take away anything from the existing but to compliment it. 2021 Portfolio Matthew Quinlan

PROPOSAL INTERNAL GLASSHOUSE Unit 2 is the home of the Tropics house. This is the particular part of the collection of warehouses that is most unique. Because of the certain conditions needed to such a species of plants there needs to be systems in place to create the perfect atmosphere and climate needed in order for the plants and trees to survive. The entire space is completely open and can be accessed via the lower ground botanical gardens or via the other publicly accessed entrance which sits between Units 1 & 2. The warehouse original roof to the retained side of the warehouses is to be removed and replaced with the newly double skin roof to provide plenty of light into the space whilst also helping to maintain the humidity.

// THE DINGLE REGENERATION STRATEGY A 30 YEAR URBAN MASTER-PLAN
Along with the ever growing City of Liverpool this strategy will accommodate for all people who live in and decide to move to Liverpool. Evidently the city is going to expand outwards and grow towards and into the fringe, this is where this strategy comes in to play because it allows for a denser population within the city and helps to expand the city and bring more people to this area. Connection, Community and Continuity are all key attributes to the regeneration of the city and with these three main focuses of this will hopefully regenerate The Dingle and turn it into the ‘in place to be’ and also be a place where residents are proud to live and visitors will have a desire to visit.
48mm sq image
48mm sq image
Going through the stages of the strategy, the first five year implementation will start off small with incremental changes focusing on the aesthetics of the area, bringing some character back to The Dingle. Focusing mainly on the aesthetics of the streets by replacing street lights/ planters and creating new public spaces with a bit of character. Within the 15 year implementation the regeneration of The Dingle will be expanding throughout the site and each part that was developed within the 5 year implementation will start to merge together. Larger schemes will be started within these 15 years, such as the re-opening of the Train Station in the Fringe zone, which will create better transport links to and from the city centre, and the waterfront activities will be developed to create attractions for visitors and residents.

/// UPPER PARLIAMENT HOUSING INDIVIDUAL HOUSING PROJECT
Parliament corner will provide a large social housing plan which consists of a multi storey apartment block which facilitates a mixture of ground floor studio apartments for students local to the universities in the Liverpool region. also ground floor 1 bed apartments are available for young professionals who have a nice route into the city centre. the upper floors consist of 2.3 and 4 bed apartments for larger families. Each apartment has its own balcony space which gives access to the outdoor surroundings, all of which are elevated above floor level to provide a distinction between public and private. The design of the apartment block creates a a central courtyard space and a shared garden to create a communal aspect to the scheme. Also within the courtyard space houses the community centre which originally existed on the site, and adjoined ot this is the Multi use sports pitch which enables the residents to keep fit and healthy but also remain within a enclosed environment. The apartment block also consist of a corner retail unit on the elevation facing Upper Parliament Street, and also the corner cafe which allows the local residents to buy essentials and also socialise through the means of coffee. To the rear of the site is the area of the lower densified terraced housing units. These consist of 3/4 bed houses with an optional second floor which is built into the roof space. 30 2021 Portfolio Matthew Quinlan

/// UPPER PARLIAMENT HOUSING INDIVIDUAL HOUSING PROJECT
Also within the terraced blocks is large open green space which has been purposely enclosed by the surrounding housing units to create another larger open safe space for families and children to play and exercise. To create a certain identity to the scheme the housing units have a large roof light which protrudes out of the roof to provide a large amount of sunlight into the optional second floor rooms. Each of the housing units has a front yard which provides built in storage for bins and also a storage unit for bikes and other equipment, these are subtly built within the design to keep the scheme clean and tidy for the residents. The entire scheme will consists of reclaimed local brick to create a historic connection to the previously demolished 1960s terraced housing blocks which originally sat within the site. The planning of the site has a strong relationship to the previous roads which sat on the site. in particular the pedestrianised access road which cuts through the terraced housing area to provide a required 2 cars per housing block parking spaces. The scheme has a strong frontage to the Upper Parliament side of the plan and the massing slowly steps down as it approaches the Terraced housing units to the rear, this was purposely done to not only create a soft connection between the two, but to also not overpower the rest of the site.

The ground floor apartment block floor plan can be accessed via the front steps which lead directly into the 1 bed apartment or the studio apartments. These can also be accessed to the rear of the internal courtyard space which access via 2 semi private entrances numbers 1 & 2. The entire floor plan is elevated 800mm above the existing ground level to create a division between the private and the public realm. Each block consists of 4 units with an singular lineal corridor providing through access to the rear courtyard and also providing the circulation to the floors above. The ground floor plan also houses the community centre to the rear of the site which sits directly between the Apartment block and terraced housing blocks. The Ground floor plan also provides a shared communal garden space and a community multi use sports pitch. The plan also houses an internal community room for particularly for the student residents to gather and socialise. A retail unit and a coffee shop is situated to the far corner of the plan facing the two main streets with pass by the site. The first floor plan consists of two units either side of the staircase and shared corridor which provides access to the mixed 2 & 3 bed apartments. The plan also provides a shared balcony terrace which connects the smaller singular block to the larger apartment block.

The materials used for the scheme are carefully considered to not disrupt the surrounding area, in particular the adjacent Georgian terraced block The overall scheme softly sits into the location with reclaimed red brick walling and a grey metal sheeting roof with a lower base grey rendered wall which separates the lower level. They also relate to the previously demolished terraced housing which used to sit on the site. The lower brick wall which sits at ground level will incorporate a series of planting to soften the hardness of the proposed materiality and give the scheme a softer presence when approaching from upper parliament street. The materials used within the development associate with the surrounding context and therefore the scheme does not look out of place in its location.

The following study shows the interior and light analysis of a two bed apartment which sits on the 1st floor of the apartment block. This is specifically chosen because it shows the internal living kitchen area which is full of lights and space and has access to the front balcony which overlooks the Georgian block adjacent to the housing scheme. The decor consists of a modern style with feature walls and a grey furniture and kitchen colour palette. The interior also provides some delicate touches such as wall art and house plants which creates a homely feel and possibly shows that this apartment particularly targets the audience of around 25-35. Oak flooring runs throughout the Kitchen, living and hallway of the apartment with the bedrooms consisting of carpet and the bathrooms are tiled to facilitate wet flooring. The walls & ceilings consist of 12.5mm plasterboard skimmed finish and with the ceiling also contains flush light fittings. LJMU LIVE PROJECT
The Royal Standard which is a registered Liverpool Charity and an artist led gallery currently situated in the Baltic Triangle were looking at the possibility of expanding further by being offered the former M & S outlet located in the Strand Shopping Centre in Bootle. The Royal Standard wanted to create a modular type space that could be easily re-arranged for different purposes, Artist workshops along with exhibitions would be the main facilities that the project would provide. Expanding further the design team took the initiative to expand the project further for the Royal Standard and create an external use of the site as a business proposal for the council by creating an external art exhibition along with an outdoor communal space and cinema.

//// THE ROYAL STANDARD, BOOTLE
LJMU LIVE PROJECT
The initial proposals included the use of scaffolding and other salvageable materials which would allow us to create a custom spec module which can be manipulated depending on the person using it, the space which surrounds it and also to whatever purpose it needs to serve. The basic rectangular structure is to start as a 4 x 3m module which is the suitable size to have an ideal internal space to be used depending on the artist who requires it. The beauty of the module and the materials used is the fact it is easy to build, it is relatively cheap and is also very transparent and therefore allows all artists to still socialise and interact without and solid barriers which allows for the ability to share ideas and work together,

PERSONAL SUMMARY A highly motivated aspiring architect whom has recently completed a Masters Degree (MArch) in Architecture and at Liverpool John Moores University. A challenging yet rewarding 2 years whilst working part time in a local architectural practice . The masters degree included some interesting projects ranging from urban design, housing and further individual development projects which as a whole only expanded my current set of skills as well as developing my knowledge and thought process behind architectural design. I have been working for a local architectural practice for over 2 years and been involved in a range of projects commercial and residential. Bringing the skills learned at university and my own personal architectural ideas i have combined this with the situations involving real life projects. Whilst being in the practice i have developed knowledge on how to handle and develop projects from start to finish, being involved with structural design and detailing along with the learning of the vast amounts of planning and regulatory information. Now keen to progress further in my architectural career, looking for opportunities as part II architectural assistant to gain more real world experience within the industry and to be involved within a practice with exciting projects.
