My name is Isabella and I’m a third year Interior Architecture student, based in Merseyside. I have recently completed my studies and will be graduating in July 2024. I am extremely enthuisiastic about embarking on a career with either an Architectural or Interior Design Practice in the near future.
Having spent much of my childhood competing in some of the most awe inspiring theaters in the country, I have always been fascinated by interior design, architecture and our built environment. I have developed a respect for our historic gems as well as modern masterpieces. I have found it really rewarding to have the opportunity to develop design projects repurposing beautiful old building’s in my own city. What I used to see as sad and unloved I now see as exciting opportunities bursting with potential. I have developed the skills, passion, vision and drive that I believe is required to see complex projects through to successful completion.
I invite you to explore my portfolio which shows a selection of the projects that I have completed at University that intends to demonstrate my creative potential and technical proficiency. I have chosen designs that showcase a variety of creative and functional concepts which I feel are also marketable.

REPURPOSEMNT OF A HOTEL IN THE LISTED FORMER NATWEST BUILDING, CASTLE STREET, LIVERPOOL.
HOST BUILDING’S EXISTING LISTED ROOF DETAILS
PURLINS ARE THE BEAMS THAT RUN HORIZONTLY TO SUPPORT THE MIDSPAN OF THE RAFTERS.
EXPOSED RAFTERS WHICH EXTEND FROM THE RIDGE TO THE WALL PLATE TO SUPPORT THE ROOF. THE RAFTERS ARE TRIMMED OUT FOR THE OPENING IN THE WINDOW FRAME.
ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE ROOF THERE ARE BATTENS WHICH ARE MADE FROM TIMBER, LIKELY TO BE NAILED ON TO THE ROOF, LIKE MOST BUILDINGS CONSTRUCTED AROUND THIS PERIOD (1898). BATTENS ARE A SECONDARY FRAMEWORK USED AS SPACERS TO RAISE THE SURFACE OF A MATERIAL, FOR ANOTHER MATERIAL TO BE FIXED ONTO, PROTECTING THE ENDURANCE OF THE MAIN STRUCTURE.
ROOF TILES HAVE BEEN NAILED ON, OVERLAPPING EACHOTHER TO DETER RAIN WATER FROM ENTERING CREATING AN EFFECTIVE WEATHER TIGHT BARRIER. THE OVERLAP TENDS TO BE ANYWHERE BETWEEN 75MM AND 100MM DEPENDING ON THE SIZE OF TILE AND PITCH OF THE ROOF.
LEAD FLASHING ON THE OUTSIDE OF WINDOWS AND THE CHIMNEY WHICH ALSO MINIMISE THE RISK OF RAINWATER PENETRATION.

THE ROOF OF THE CASTLE STREET ELEVATION WILL BE REMOVED AND REFURBISHED
THE CAST IRON ESCAPE STAIRS WILL BE REMOVED AS THEY TAKE AWAY FROM THE AESTHETIC OF THE PROPOSED ATRIUM.
THE REAR (HIGHLIGHTED) HALF OF THE BUILDING WHICH IS NOT LISTED WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE FIRST FLOOR UP, READY FOR THE NEXT PHASES OF WORK.
THE ROOF VORTEX WILL THEN BE IMPORTED AND FIXED IN PLACE.
THE RECONSTRUCTED BUILDING WOULD CONSIST OF A CONCRETE FRAME THE COMPLETION OF CONSTRUCTION OF THE BACK END OF THE BUILDING.
THIS STRUCTURE WILL BE CONSTRUCTED ON THE MAIN EXISTING STRUCTURAL STEEL FRAME AND WALLS,
WHEN DEMOLISHING BUILDINGS, ESPECIALLY ONES OF SUCH AGE, IT IS IMPORTANT FOR CONTRACTORS TO BE SURE THEY ARE NOT BEING EXPOSED TO ASPESTOS THAT MAY BE EXISTING WITHIN WALLS OF ANY BUILDING BUILT BEFORE 2000.
THE POOL WILL BE SUPPORTED BY BEAMS WITHIN BOTH OF THE WALLS THAT RUN PARALLEL TO THE LENGTH OF THE POOL.

IN THIS PROPOSAL, THE VORTEX ‘BREAKS THROUGH’ THE FLOOR OF THE ATRIUM. IT COMES DOWN THROUGH THE CEILING RESTAURANT BELOW. ALTHOUGH IN THIS VISUAL THE RESTAURANT IS NOT VISIBLE AS IT IS PAST THE SECTION LINE, THE SECTION SHOWS THE ALIGNMENT OF THE VORTEX IN RELATION TO THE REST OF THE BUILDING.

An opening in the wall of this size would be desirable but may only be possible in a room with a higher ceiling. this is because an 8m long rsj would require a significantly larger vertical space above the folding doors in order to fit within the wall. an alternative to this could be the use of 2x 4m rsj (i beams) above the bi-folds, which would also be a more cost effective option.
