About Me! My personality would best be described as a hard working and driven individual. I am very passionate about the projects that I undertake, and as a result the project outcomes portray this. most of my design inspiration comes from the buildings around. I try to help my modern deisngs fit in with the other surrounding older buildings, this may be through the use of a similar colour pallete, or mimicking the shapes and textures surrounding. The flow of rooms within a building interests me a lot, and how the spaces speak to each other, is a big important aspect within architecture... as people may spend large amounts of time within the carefully designed spaces. Comprehensive Design Project Baltic Photography School

This project I was briefed to design a building which houses a photography and digital imaging school for Liverpool John Moores. I knew i wanted to create a light and airy space within the building, this is proven to help the productivity of the students within the school. Oriented with the back of the design facing a southerly aspect, this will make the most of the light , and able to bring it into the rest of the building using ‘borrowed light’. The idea behind the ethos was to create a space which evoked different emotions to the people within, such as mixing the use of light as you travel through the building. Also changing the way you travel through it, the staircases are in seperate parts of the building, and to travel through a large part of it, you will have to change the staircase that you are using. For this project I knew I wanted to create a monolithic type structure that juxstaposes the modern with the old.

For the project i knew that i wanted to create a separation between the spaces on offer. The ground floor of my building will be accessed by a seperate entrace to the rest of the building, which is a staircase to the side of the design. The striking colour of the Corten steel facade adds a real sense of interest to the bulding, and where there is a window, there will be 100mm holes cut at random, in order to create a number of interesting shadows and light into the rooms. I believe that the design suits its positing within the baltic area of Liverpool. There are a number of brick built designs around the site, and the colours of the rusted corten steel material helps the large eleven storey building blend into the surroundings. I have taken inspiration from the New Art Museum in New York, by Sanaa Architects. They used a design strategy where they sorted the building into blocks, and the size of the blocks is based on the importance of the rooms which are housed within. I have done a similar strategy when creating my design. 2

Floorplans BasementThis is generally used as storage space, and houses the water pump for the ground source heat pump, that is used for the underfloor heating system. Ground floorThis floor is used for the public gallery that will showcase the students photography and graphic design works. 1st FloorThis is the main reception space for the university building, and features an eight storey atrium. 2nd FloorOn this floor is the first photography studio, it only features two roof lights into the floor above, this is due to the lighting being controlled in a photography studio. 3rd Floor The library area is on this floor, and incorporates a mezzanine level, which furthr opens up the atrium space to the floors below. 4th FloorLibrary mezzanine level which incorprates a lounge area for the students to congregate within. 5th FloorThis is one of the lecture theatres featured. 6th FloorThis floor is the computer suite, it is an important floor within the building and is mainly open plan. 7th FloorThis floor is also important to the running of the university and features an open plan lecture theatre with moveable walls which creates a versatile space. 8th FloorThis floor is mainly a viewing and congregating deck, where there is multiple photo oppourtunities across the city. 9th FloorThis floor is my favourite one as it is a photography studio that can be lit with natural light as there is windows on almost every wall. The large floor to ceiling curtain window that goes through the whole of the atrium provides large amounts of light.

Hebden Bridge Research Facility For this project I wanted to design a research facility where people could also some and treat the space as a communal building. The forefront of my design idea was to try and offset the small amount of carbon that would have been produced in the construction of the building. I did this by having two ‘winter gardens’ facing the riverside, which is of a southerly aspect, this will allow the gardens to make the most of the all important sunlight. I also knew that i wanted my design to blend into the surrounding buildings, which is why i have used similar, locally sourced stone for the walls. Which is soured within a 5 mile radius from the site. The roof lines of my building also follow those of the buildings on either side. Thus creating interesting, and sharp angles for the winter gardens on the river side. The site also has a slope from the road, so i have decided to level it out, and have the first floor connect to the stree, and make the main entrance through the centre of the corridoor pathway, or the ‘spine’ of the building.

Floorplans

This floor houses the cafe area, which is fully accessible through the lifts, and allows a view to the floor below through a void. On the right side of the design there is a lounge area, and a computer space which could also be used as office space for the scientists, or could be used as a comfort lounge area as it is separate from the rest of the building but accessible through a lift and elongated staircase which connects the entrance into the building, to the rest of it.

This text column is 64mm wide, repeating width from the 3 square format. This page format allows placement of any ‘A’ format page in landscape, the yellow box being an actual A4 page size. Again this leaves a potentially unusual blank strip here, and as in previous pages a careful approach to using these bands should be considered.

Urban Design Project For this project i wanted to design a well thought out space that had the ability to bring the local community together, with a market space, that was covered with a PTFE canopy, that is crucial to the whole design as i knew i wanted it to add interest to the space. The space also incorporates a growing area within the cenre of the space, this is due to the sunlight hitting the centre, and this being the area that would benefit the plants the most. I had the idea that the community could use this allotment space in order to grow their own produce, and potentially sell this in the market space. At the heart of this design was the community spirit, i wanted to make a communal space, as the people that live in and around the area are a mix of elderly and mostly students with the construction of three new student housing buildings going up arounf the site within a 10 mile radius.
