Always being a hard working person from an early age this has become apparent in the work that I produce, striving for perfection comes naturally to myself. Taking a keen interest in shape, form and texture, this has underpinned the philosophical thinking in all of my produced work.

Juxtaposition of Light and Darkness The Baltic school of photography is an innovative building located in the Baltic triangle area of Liverpool. The area the building is located is of significant historical value in the Liverpool area, holding numerous characterful highly detailed buildings. Meaning that any new proposal has to be sympathetic to its surroundings. The proposed black façade of this proposed building has been carefully chosen to relate back to the initial concept of light and darkness, the use of this creates a bold and striking ‘darkness’ which changes on the interior of the building as the large glass façade allows natural daylight to flood every inch of the floorspace creating a juxtaposition between ‘light and darkness’ represented in a spatial form.
‘Darkness is the absence of light, and light cannot exist without darkness’

When choosing the site it had become apparent that the adjacent building to the site would massively overpower any structure not just in terms of design but in terms of the amount of natural daylight that is received by the building. Once analysing the sun path for the site it became clear that the only direct sunlight that will hit the building in its entirety would be in the afternoon and on the south west faรงade, this in turn shapes the way that the design has been developed with a clear multi-faceted approach to the south west elevation and to the north west elevation, one to allow for natural daylight in the internal spaces and the other to take advantage of the views of the city and dock.

The natural development of this design has come about thinking of the relation to ‘public and private’ spaces with relation back to the light and darkness concept, this has been represented with the lighter spaces being conveyed as the public; relating public spaces with light evokes welcome within the space and allows for the internal space to appear brighter than what would be conventionally thought by anyone experiencing the internal spaces of the building because of the strong boldness of the black façade this creates a juxtaposition between indoors and outdoors.

Throughout extensive research it had come to my attention that photography itself cannot exist without light, this had led me to explode different environments where different levels of light and darkness were played with, something that has evidently underpinned my overall final outcome. With researching abstract photography I had come across the work of Leticia Lampert, taking particular interest with the apparent shapes that present themselves through the abstract nature of the images. This is a photography and digital imaging style that she is famous for, taking individual images and stitching them together creating an interesting overall outcome that appears as though it is a normal photograph. The use of colour in her work is striking, black and white photography has long been related to evoking emotion

Hebden Bridge Flood testing Facility

The overall idea for this concept is to be a flood testing facility, this would be possible by flooding the lower space in the mountain side and building a dam on the sides that are too low. The idea represents a building floating on the water then with services being plumed through the apparent bridge access that is used to gain access from the other buildings on the site.
On the left is the precedent that I have used to create this proposed concept, it shows the lined buildings in the space, this coupled with their pointed faรงade allows them to stand out, this would be the look that could be achieved on my proposal. This concept allows for the treehouse aspect of the precedents that I have researched, I like the spacing of the buildings, allowing them to be clustered together, but also the buildings will be separate. The space in front of the proposed buildings will be flooded with water, allowing for the concept of the flood testing unit to come to fruition. This would allow for full use of the water space unlike in previous ones where there were proposed buildings in the space.

The structure of the overall building will be steel, this will have glass and concrete inserts where appropriate (refer to plans on other pages) it is apparent from the image on the left that the structure will be from steel, I have chosen this because of its quick assembly time as opposed to conventional building methods. The decision to use a steel frame also came from one of the precedents used, the Farnsworth house which has been analysed on another page is clearly present in this design, this strives for minimalism in its design and a steel structure would help achieve this, bare frame aspect of the design is also apparent in the precedent research. Although the images on this page don’t show it the only place that will be filled with concrete is the basement, because of the nature of a basement it wouldn’t be possible both structurally or aesthetically to include glass walls in an underground environment.
