About Me I have a strong passion for design in the built environment, it provides a platform to promote creative and positive change. I am 23 year old graduate from Liverpool John Moores University with a Masters of Architecture degree. Studying on the MArch Architecture programme has given me the opportunity develop skills and discover my personal strengths as a designer. Undertaking the course through the pandemic has tested my work ethic but most importantly it has helped develop my independence as a designer. I look forward to enhancing my skills as I pursue a career in Architecture. Thank you for taking the time to look at my portfolio.

THE SUSTAINABLE PLASTIC FACTORY |THE MISSING PIECE IN THE UTOPIAN VISION PLASTIC ONCE OFFERED|

PLASTIC IS A RELATIVELY NEW MATERIAL IN RELATION TO THE EXISTENCE OF PLANET EARTH AND ITS NATURAL RESOURCES. THE SYNTHETIC MATERIAL WAS INVENTED IN THE EARLY 1900’S AND AT THE TIME IT WAS CONSIDERED AS A PARADIGM SHIFT IN THE MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY. FOLLOWING WORLD WAR II PLASTIC BECAME MASS PRODUCED, MANUFACTURING WAS NO LONGER CONSTRAINED BY NATURAL MATERIALS THEREFORE PLASTIC OFFERED AN UTOPIAN VISION OF THE FUTURE. HOWEVER, STUDIES SHOWED THAT PLASTIC WAS FIRST OBSERVED IN THE OCEAN AS EARLY AS THE 1960. SCIENTIST LATER SUGGESTED THAT PLASTIC WAS HAZARDOUS TO HUMAN HEALTH AS PARTICLES WERE LEAKING INTO FOOD AND DRINK. ON THE OTHER HAND THE SYNTHETIC ALLOWED FOR MODERN INVENTIONS AND TECHNOLOGY SUCH AS COMPUTERS AND MOBILE PHONES. HUMANS HAVE CREATED A NEW MATERIAL WITH FANTASTIC FUNCTIONAL PROPERTIES BUT IT CAN BE ARGUED WE AS A SPECIES DON’T FULLY UNDERSTAND PLASTIC AND THEREFORE HAVEN’T GOT CONTROL OF ITS LIFE CYCLE. AS A RESULT, ‘THE SUSTAINABLE PLASTIC FACTORY’ AIMS TO CREATE A CONTINUAL CYCLE FOR PLASTIC. A SUSTAINABLE LIFE CYCLE WILL ALLOW US TO REAP THE REWARDS OF PLASTIC AND USE IT FOR FUNCTIONAL LONG TERM PRODUCTS, IN RETURN THIS WILL REDUCE SINGLE USE PLASTIC AND LIMIT THE DETRIMENTAL IMPACT THAT PLASTIC IS HAVING ON THE PLANET. ‘THE SUSTAINABLE PLASTIC FACTORY’ IS THE MISSING PIECE IN THE UTOPIAN VISION PLASTIC ONCE OFFERED.

SOCIAL AREA OF MASTERPLAN The plan outlines half of phases one and two, the social area of phase one and the top half of the linear park of phase two. The existing brick warehouses have been utilised offering a range of social venues, art and music galleries and studios, restaurants, bars, pubs, clubs, a museum, and a brewery. The ground floor of each warehouse has been dedicated to commercial, social activity, whereas the first-floor levels have been allocated to residential use; this allows for many new residents to live in the area. Various sections of each warehouse are to be remodelled and glazed, allowing for a better connection between each linear element, the river Mersey and promenade, the outdoor social spaces between the warehouses and the linear park. The existing car parking between the warehouses has been re-landscaped offering outdoor social activity; boat hire along the river, art sculptures, music shows as well as reed beds and planting. A new ferry terminal allows for great transportation between the site to the Wirral, with the aquarium situated beside Brunswick Dock being a large, statement building for the area.

SPORTS AREA OF MASTERPLAN The plan outlines the bottom half of the linear park and the sporting area for phase one of the masterplan. Like the social venues, the existing warehouses have been utilised and reused, the only retained facility being the existing trampolining centre. This zone acts as the main active area of the scheme, improving physical health and fitness. Many indoor and outdoor sporting activities are available for all ages and different weather conditions. With the removal of the existing go karting warehouse the site has become more open, allowing for the linear park of phase two to blend into the sporting spaces. This is a key area of the masterplan as the lift allows each of the three phases to become connected, allowing a route between the upper level of the cliff and the botanical gardens to the lower level of cliff. The openness between the linear park and the sporting venues encourages movement towards the river Mersey with its views through the glazed link and into the inner park between the warehouses.

Diagram Of Botanical Gardens

As part of the linear park design the existing, dilapidated Brunswick train station has been redesigned. The new tramlines will further improve the transport and connections to the local area offering easy access right along Liverpool’s lengthy waterfront. The linear park has been designed to be flexible, allowing the landscape to constantly alter throughout the year. To do this the fixed cranes on site will be able to move the modules to different positions, this would allow for large festivals to take place near Liverpool city centre. One potential use for the flexible landscape could be to house Creamfields festival. The pods will contain various uses such as rented studios, bike shops and dance studios. The main use of the pods will be available as rented accommodation, this will allow visitors to the area to stay for several nights. The sporting venues can be used for a variety of competition events, such as a Youth Olympics for competitive swimming. The pods will offer the required accommodation for athletes or festival goers that need to remain nearby to the site for a variety of days.

KAYAKING AXONOMETRIC SECTION The promenade varies in width because of the existing building and the edge of the River Mersey, therefore this impacts the width of the pedestrian routes from the north and south of waters edge. However, in the central space between the existing warehouses, the kayaking arena takes a large portion of the central space. It provides viewing platforms around all sides of the external arena, where the centre is for kayaking and the outer ring is for white water rafting. The Listed ramp separates the pedestrian linear park and the tramlines which connect to the newly redesigned Brunswick Station. The shared surface meanders through the linear park with directional cycle lanes either side.

48

Tom Smith 2021 Portfolio

LIFT AXONOMETRIC SECTION The promenade is linked to the central space by one of several glazed links across the scheme, these areas have been identified as key routes connecting pedestrians to the water front. The central space is a large public area occupied with pavilions which encourages social interactions and as a destination. This area has a physical link to the landmark lift which allows residents from the cliff face descend to the social areas of the scheme.

2021 Portfolio Tom Smith

49

COMMUNITY AREA OF MASTERPLAN A key tenet of the masterplan was to increase the health and well-being of the area through a multiprogrammed approach involving activity, social and the promotion of healthy eating. An urban farm located centrally between the community buildings in the neighbourhood will strive to educate residents in urban agriculture, as well as provide cheaper access to healthy food, to improve the diets of the inner-city. The arrangement of this farm should produce a wide variety of food for export and local consumption, whilst contributing employment and education to those same people. The Aquaponics labs along the street will also provide a centre for research to be linked with the universities, furthering academia in the city. A second allotment area is to be provided to the school for educational use, with the rest of the park improved to be a more enticing area for local use

MArch Year 1 Semester 2 Building Design - Co-Housing The Intergenerational Streets

The Intergenerational Streets The UK is currently in a housing crisis, as a result there is a high demand, from all backgrounds of the population, for affordable and accessible homes. The aim of this proposal is to identify the demographic of the surrounding area and provide a range of residential units to meet the demands of the people. Infusing generations is key, this will be done by creating accessible living for everyone while proving large communal gardens which allow for opportunities to socialise.
