Roodee Boutique Hotel

This design for my thesis project combines a luxury boutique hotel with the experience of spectating horse racing at Chester Racecourse. This has been achieved by shaping the overall form of the building to wrap around a new parade ring for the racecourse, which will bring more spectators up-close to the horses for a greater experience.

This project has been developed as a proposal within a Master plan for Chester. It is designed on a site close to the West Gate into Chester City Centre, and bordering Chester Racecourse as well as being located adjacent to a train station proposed in the master plan. In the urban design proposal, the site was developed to replace an existing hotel with a bigger hotel and conference centre. The proposal also replaces the existing parade ring in the centre of the racecourse, bringing it adjacent to the grandstands, where it is more accessible and can generate a more significant atmosphere. As the building sits on what will become an important pedestrian route into the city centre, it was also important to develop the street side of the site to be unimposing and pedestrian friendly, inviting the public into the buildings amenities.

The ground floor of the building features a large lobby space and high quality restaurant which are both easily accessible to the public and provide direct access to the parade ring stand. It was important for the hotel to have a feeling of luxury so that it doesn’t feel out of place within the surroundings of the racecourse and so that it will be attractive to the middle-class patrons that can be associated with horse racing. This has been largely achieved architecturally with tall ceilings, open spaces and an abundance of natural light.

Roodee Boutique Hotel Technical Design The structural ambition for this project was for it to be designed using as much CLT (cross -laminated timber) as possible and use glulam columns and beams where necessary. This has been achieved on the upper-floors where CLT cross-walls will provide much of the structural support for the rest of the building. Glulam columns have been used on the first and ground floor to support large, open spaces. The basement level is to be constructed with a concrete retaining wall which will wrap around the basement to create a tank. Externally the building will be clad with larch timber panels to give the building aesthetic appeal and create a rain screen for the internal structure.

Roodee Boutique Hotel Environmental Design

The ambition of this strategy is to provide building occupants with the best possible internal environmental conditions whilst also trying to minimize any negative impacts the building may have on the natural environment. This has been achieved through active and passive ventilation systems to provide all spaces within the building with fresh, temperate air. It has also been achieved through substantial natural daylighting with consideration for the reduction in glare. Considerations have also been made for the acoustic performance of spaces within the building, heating and material choices. Planting Connections Chester

Enhancing under-utilised land to create a better connected neighbourhood in Chester, striving for sustainability and a high quality of life The scheme intends to create a connected district of areas relating to public transport and intercity travel, urban agriculture and communal living. A new train station will better serve the whole of Chester, particularly the race course and will provide the opportunity for more business and sustainable travel within the site. A currently unusable area of the site will be transformed into an urban farm producing local, fresh and sustainable food for the city, this is possible because of a series of micro-dams which will provide physical routes and connections as well as providing energy for the farm and surrounding area. The third area of the site completes the rivers edge and proposes sustainable, modular housing with a green corridor which becomes a communal garden for residents.

The scheme proposes public squares along the pedestrian axis with a mixture of residential and commercial spaces which create vistas over the river and natural landscape which exist on the edge of the scheme. The proposal respects historical elements such as the Roman wall and the Canary Warf which is integrated into the master plan as a functioning building and as a point of interest. Baltic Farm

The brief for this live project was to develop a modest ‘community canopy’ which could function as a temporary event space, cafe and offices. The intention of this project was to work through the RIBA work stages as part of a design team producing documents associated with the work stages such as critical path diagrams, schedule of works, fire safety documents and risk assessment forms. Completion of the project resulted in the production of a design report for the real life clients, working up to stage 3 of the RIBA plan of work with plans that could potentially be submitted for planning permission.

Sandford Street Mixed Housing

Increasing density and diversity in Birkenhead to protect the green belt. This project proposes a mixture of small family homes, flats and studios, as well as space for a workshop and shared garden space which will provide affordable, but high quality homes for a diverse community. Within the context of a small residential master plan, the project provides a viable alternative for building low density homes on the local green belt.

The intention of the scheme is to design a block of housing which would provide a range of high quality duplex and single storey apartments suitable for different agendas including first time buyers and young families. Increasing Density and Diversity in Birkenhead to Protect the Green Belt This project is part of a Masterplan to regenerate an area of Birkenhead which has become undesireable despite its proximity to Hamilton Square and the train station which creates a short commute to Liverpool. The intention was to design a block of housing which would provide a range of duplex and single storey apartments suitable for differing need such as medium sized families and young professionals. This was to be achieved whilst increasing the density from the common new-build semi-detatched homes seen across Britain and would provide an alternative to building such homes on surrounding green belt. A key principle was to create minimal indoor circulation space and to provide homes with dual aspect wherever possible or to compensate with a double height space or private external space in the case of the studios. Easy access to the courtayrd is also considered and Type D Floor Plansto provide direct access for the homes on the eastern block whilst also so the courtyard was raised reducing the need for circulation space here. A significant portion of the groundfloor has been preserved for a light industrial workshop, respecting the surrounding industrial landscape. A small cafe/ Type Floor Plans Bar has been accomodated to the south of the site, facing theDproposed park where it has the potential to be successful. Within the masterplan, offsite parking is planned, however, few disabled spaces have been included within the frame of the building by the main entrance.

Massing Development Massing for the design developed to allow more sun to reach south facing facades through mixed heights and to create a semi-public courtyard which opens up onto the neighbouring development and towards the park.

A range of housing typologies will provide the opportunity for people 3D Massing of all situations to find a suitable home within the project. A double height space on the duplex apartments ensures there is an abundance of natural light in the main space where the space may be otherwise deep and gloomy.

With the buildings core and store in the corner and because of the raised courtyard, indoor circulation space has been kept mostly within the core itself but also spills out onto the second and fourth floors of the north most block.

The structure is a load-bearing block-work system with an exposed red brick finish as to fit in with the context. Wall and floor build-ups are intended to produce high levels of thermal and acoustic insulation, creating a comfortable internal environment and improving the buildings efficiency environmentally.

The Importance of Cemeteries in Modern Society A Study of Liverpool’s Cemeteries to determine how they can remain relevant in a changing social climate

This specialist study project explores the rapid rise of cemeteries in the 19th century with an in-depth study of some of Liverpool’s most prominent cemeteries. Following the relaxation of laws against cremation and changing social attitudes towards religion, cemeteries quickly became less important and this study intends to discover how deteriorating cemeteries currently function, and how they might function for their local communities in the future.

The Hub Ellesmere Port

This master plan is proposed in Ellesmere Port within close proximity of the train station and is proposed on mostly unused former industrial land. The key proposals are; Increasing the density of the town which is currently dominated by terraces and newbuild semi detached houses; Creating a new social hub with leisure facilities and night life, which the town currently lacks; Creating a new college campus and creating new pedestrian links from the train station.

Whilst increasing density with high quality homes is the master plans main priority, it was important for the proposal to create greater choice of leisure and retail facilities for local residents. By utilising the canal, a large, scenic public space has been created with links to pedestrian and cycle routes, this will provide the people of Section through Meadow Lane and Train Station Ellesmere Port with a focal point 1:250 for meeting and enjoying the districts new facilities. For a more detailed study of the Master plan, I have looked at the public space created by the enclosure of the community college buildings. I have intended to create a space which will have desirable routes which lead to the entrances of the buildings and divide the square into different sections which could meet different requirements such as, eating, meeting and bike storage. From the original master plan I have slightly changed the shape of the buildings to extend the pedestrian route to the train station which also makes the square a visible point of interest upon exiting the station.
