BRIEF The former slave prison has grown into a hub of vibrant activity where African, Indian, Javanese, Burgher, Moor, Sinhalese Tamil and most prominently Malay heritage are visible at every street corner, thriving in harmony. It is entangled in the music you hear, colours you see and the food you eat in Slave Island. Slave Island” continues to carry its unique historical value in its people and the stories they narrate, but unfortunately it may not be there for much longer, due to the “urban development that fits with the world” happening in Colombo. Tall, shiny buildings are taking over the buildings along with facades that still stand as remainders of colonial architecture and with stylish arches, winding woodwork, and metal installations, which emphasize Victorian-era styles. Slave Island is in fact losing its architecture along with the sense of community that makes this location remarkable. The remaining residents of Slave Island live with a continued element of uncertainty. The other side of the coin is the community that would be moved to area due to rapid construction of condominium projects. The aim of the project is to create a space where the unique culture of Slave Island could be further celebrated years to come, simultaneously providing opportunities for the new community to interact with each other and as well as with the indigenous community. It will also be an attempt to reinstate the harmony of different ethnicities that is unique to Slave Island. 2021 Portfolio Sandali Thiranagama

The abstract imagery shows how I intend to transform the quality of my project into a tectonic form for an architectural expression. The sketch illustrates the qualities of order and disorder, rigid and organic, interaction, layered and solid and void coexist in harmony.
ABSTRACT 4
Sandali Thiranagama 2021 Portfolio
The concept model shows the strategies and tactics used to achieve the above in a tectonic form. It conceptualizes how order and layering of solids and voids brings back soothe to chaos. This represents how I want to eliminate the chaotic stressful nature of the site and tension, fear and uncertainty among people of different communities, by creating a contrasting haven amidst the disorder of a city.
CONCEPT 2021 Portfolio Sandali Thiranagama
5
Since the remaining existing building aligns with one side of the site, it was decided to have a grid with lines parallel to the existing building line and lines perpendicular to it.
MASSING AND O 6
Sandali Thiranagama 2021 Portfolio
A conceptual imagery model was made to further explore the idea. Since the existing building was 6 stories high, it made sense to have a relatively taller building in the corner of the junction. This decision was further justifying as that corner opens up to the most urbanized junction of the vicinity.Rest of the components were modeled to cascade from the larger building towards the other small angular corner of the site.

Reusable Energy Solar panels shall be placed on pitched roofs. The orientation of the installation can be ignored, considering the location of Sri Lanka. Collected solar energy shall be primarily used for the operation of active chilled panels, and secondarily the excess solar energy and the heat produced by the heat exchanger shall be used for the hot water circuit, completing the heat recovery system.

LIVE PROJECT Williamson’s Tunnels Entrance Pavillion
52
Sandali Thiranagama 2021 Portfolio
BRIEF Williamsons Tunnels features a series of underground spaces, carved out of red sandstone of Edge Hill. Unfortunately the tunnels were filled in and forgotten about and only existed in mythology, but now these have been recovered progressively through hand excavation by a team of volunteers. With the construction of the railway cutting into the Lime Street Station, the tunnels were separated into two parts. Much larger and deeper northern section based around the Williamson town house site in Mason street is still being excavated. Nevertheless, northern section has now reached a point where some spaces could be accessed by the public. Currently the volunteers who are involved in excavation are based in a portacabin at the mason street site. Therefore, to station volunteers properly and to open premises to the public, FoW requires a small structure with the provision for the staff, a location for PPE equipment and an introductory space for visitors for these activities to be carried out in a more suitable environment and their public events to be more suitably accommodated.

HOUSING PROJECT Everton Hill Housing
58
Sandali Thiranagama 2021 Portfolio
BRIEF The project revolves around the main features of the site, predominantly the view, and the slope. The challenge was to get maximum views while achieving density. Considering heights of adjacent buildings and the topography, individual units, not more than three stories are aligned to the natural levels, by achieving uninterrupted views to each unit. These units are seemingly narrow and designed for young couples and families. It was vital to provide the sense of home for residents, therefore each unit has its own small garden area. The road running through the site, naturally divides its residents, therefore pool, a communal garden area, and a roof terrace are provided to building up the connectivity through experience. The communal garden area is only accessed by residents, providing security and privacy. The pool and the roof terrace are accessed by residents and non –residents, especially those who shall be using offices, retail and restaurant spaces along the road. Offices, retail, and restaurant spaces also participate to enhance the current social aspects of the site.Current streetscape has a calm atmosphere therefore the combination of fair-faced concrete and timber along with greenery is used to preserve the serenity of the site 2021 Portfolio Sandali Thiranagama

DESIGN STRATEGY The proposed mixed use scheme consists 53 single units of 3 housing types; house type 1, house type 2 and studio. The studio also contains office spaces and retail small restaurant at the road level by the roadside. Topmost level has an indoor pool for recreation, having the best view from the site. The lower portion of the site contains a smaller garden space. Two portions of the site are connected by a footbridge. The scheme also provides spaces for car parking, laundry and other utilities. The scheme is targeting people who are seeking for starter homes and families. Outdoor lifestyle is celebrated in terms of both unit and the scheme as a whole. The gradient of the sitet is incorporated in the design to get an uninterrupted view for each unit.

Sandali Thiranagama 2021 Portfolio
BRIEF The site is predominantly residential, with some large green spaces in close proximity. But these green spaces are not thriving with activity and people, leaving the streets quiet and dull. Due to the high quantities of housing and residential plots, we believe the site has the potential to become a family orientated and child friendly, fun area. The water front by the local businesses is not being used to its full potential although it does have a pedestrian foot path enabling you to take in the beautiful views Not only is there a lack of connection between the city centre and our proposed site, but there is no route or connection to the other side of the River Dee. This is wasted potential. Extending on from the existing city walls and water tower, we are proposing a bridge route over the river and back into the city again. This route will be pedestrianised and have a separate cyclist route 2021 Portfolio Sandali Thiranagama

SPECIALIST STUDY Reality In Fiction
96
Sandali Thiranagama 2021 Portfolio
BRIEF Favouring the past is quite evident in British architecture, which is also one of the aspects that makes British cities unique from other cities in the world. Pre-war buildings are predominantly of the neoclassical or Gothic Revival architectural styles. If we consider the time, these were built-in, immediately these styles do look as if those are out of time and space. It is more like a fake architectural world among the reality that we all wish to escape from. Most importantly these revival buildings, specifically gothic revival buildings can be seen everywhere, in every town or village, old or new. It is hard to think of a church that is unaffected by the gothic revival. Moreover, since we still see gothic revival buildings, and since some are still in use, it is easier to study these buildings and it is important to study why these buildings are still loved. The idea of the study is to explore the world of “fake British architecture”, and to understand the reason for its existence. To study the matter, influences must be looked at. It is vital to mention that this shall not study architectural styles in detail, in terms of elements, but the evolution of ideals and motives and influences shall be thoroughly studied. At the end of the essay, as a case study, the fictional use of the “fake architecture” will be explored using the first book and movie of the famous fictional franchise, Harry Potter, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone. 2021 Portfolio Sandali Thiranagama

AFTER THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION Joseph Paxton’s Crystal Palace is a prominent example for the innovative use of steel in architecture. With the introduction of Bessemer’s conversion process steel became available in larger quantities but it did not play an important role in British construction as it should have, until the next century. The external expression steel gave was rejected by the conventional architectural belief. In search for a brighter future, Victorians look back at the past for a boost to the moral tone. Immediately it seems like a trivial solution, but factors that trigger psychological changes for the better should not be taken for granted. At the end of a thorough search, it was medieval architecture, which travelled through time to provide a blueprint for Victorian architects and town planners, to salvage their cities, thereby their people, out of the misery created by industrial revolution.
98
Sandali Thiranagama 2021 Portfolio
ROMANTIC VISIONS Gothic Revival, however, was purely an English movement. (Clark, 1962) It was a conscious movement which occurred opposed to Classical Architecture, in the second half of 18th century and mostly in the 19th century. It fascinating to think as to why the direction of neoclassical architecture changed, particularly to Gothic, a medieval architectural style. What is most peculiar is that this change happens when technology was available the most. There may have been reasons for this change but the first, sparked in 18th century, comes out of visual arts and literature. The romantic sensibility of the 18th century favoured the awe and terror which came with vastness and power in sublime and the quaint irregularity of picturesque but rejected the symmetry and regularity of beautiful. In that sense it makes sense that gothic ruins were vastly used in the cultural market, whether on canvases for county house collections, plates for middle class readers or in stage sets for production of Shakespeare.
DOMESTIC

PUGIN “The strength lay in the new body of human values by which men had begun to judge architecture; the weakness in the fact that gothic had no architectural principles and that the architects who employed it were all trained in the classical style and used the style for preference.” This argument proves to be true when we look back at the construction of strawberry hill. Walpole copied designs, rather precisely but there were no rules or moral principles behind it. In few years this weakness began to change and the man responsible for this change was Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin.
NORTHERN CIVIC ARCHITECTURE Nineteenth century saw what known as the battle of styles. It was a passionate debate between neo- classicists and gothic revivalists. While Liverpool succumbed to neo – classicism, Gothic triumphed in Manchester. “In this style let us build the church, the palace and the cottage.” Once said Ruskin. Gothic that Pugin followed was closely knit with the church but it was Ruskin who secularized gothic.

The choice of harry potter as a case study could seem irrelevant at a glance but when looking at the narrative of harry potter, it is a story about a little boy who is frustrated about his entire life, gets to entire the magical world. This narrative parallel’s with the exploration of the essay. First few chapters of the dissertation look at the attempts of creating an idealized environment first through visual arts and literature, moving to architecture. It was all about sentiments. A route of escape from the dark consequences of the industrial revolution but the fantasy UK is still preferred over the real built environment. J.K. Rowling uses this common human desire as a narrative for her book series of harry potter. What is more important for this essay is her way of using Architecture to support the narrative which will be looked at in this section. Harry Potter is a book series written by Joanne Rowling, popularly known as J.K. Rowling, which later adapted to film. this case study looks at the first book of the franchise,” Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone” which became a major success. In addition to the main reason mentioned before, there are certain aspects for Harry Potter and the philosopher’s stone to be suitable for the subject matter. Story’s existence in dual mediums allows studying the strategies of different mediums in approaching the same narrative. It shows how the genius of J.K. Rowling is turned into a visual experience mixed with Stuart Craig’s imagination. Another important factor is that the story flows through both the normal world (known as the “muggle world” in the story) and the magical world. This allows the reader to experience familiar scenarios before the introduction of magic. This is vital as it shows what known as ‘normal’ and what known as ‘fiction’ in terms of the architecture of the narrative. It is also the reason to choose particularly the first book for the study. It is the introduction to the series which grasped many hearts globally and the first movie is the least with digital manipulations which allows us to study the vast use of locations and production sets. The mix of the real and fictional world makes a combination of memories and imagination, especially when it comes to the reader. Global success shows that there is a factor that resonates on a global scale with the UK. The study intends to explore the reality of the fictional world of Harry Potter through the means of fictional desires of Britain that explored before in previous chapters. This chapter will consist of 3 parts, looking at the insufferable normal life, escape to the ideal magical world, and the negativity towards brutalism through ideals and motives previously explained. Favouring the past is quite evident in British architecture. Which is also one of the aspects that makes British cities unique from other cities in the world. Prewar buildings are predominantly of the neoclassical or Gothic Revival architectural styles. If we consider the time these were built-in, at a glance these styles do look as if out of time and space. It’s more like a fake architectural world among the reality that we all wish to escape from. To study the matter, influences have to be looked at. 100
