ABOUT ME I am a 21 year old graduate of Liverpool John Moores University who is excited to continue their architectural journey at my Part 1 placement. Growing up in Liverpool i have always had an appreciation for architecture both old and new. I have an interest in the everchanging world and how design is effected by this. Sustainable design has played a large role in my education and i hope that this shows throughout my portfolio.

THE NORTHERN SOUL ASSEMBLY

The Northern Soul Assembly is a large civic building that serves as a parliamentary space for the North of England. It is a space for political debate that engages with the public as well as politicians and encourages a shared involvement. The ultimate aim of the assembly is to celebrate the North and provide a space that reengages the public with politics. The site for the Assembly is Dale Street car park in Manchester. This is a very central location between Picadilly train station and the very popular Northern Quarter. There are a number of hotels in close proximity to the site and most of the surrounding buildings are of a large scale.

Could contain a lot of square images! - and a format with 5 or 6 squares per page is also possibel to make. Here the 4 square pages have a 2mm gap between each image. The 3 squares per page images have 3mm gap between images, and the centrefold gap is always 3mm. This keeps all page margins the same to all pages. This is font size 9, and the text is ‘Justified’ to give a neat right side.

The heart of the building is the debate chamber that can seat up to 540 people and was specially designed in a curved form that celebrates democracy and public debate. The ground floor is a very open, welcoming space with a cafe and exhibition space. The rest of the building is less integrated, with a communal library and meeting rooms on the left and legislative offices and other spaces on the right. Despite this devide there is still full acess around the perimeter of the chamber so conversations between citizens and members of parliament can occur in some of the ajoining breakout spaces.

The site of the project boarders the Rochdale canal that has ran from Manchester to Sowerby Bridge since 1804. As seen on this map from 1900 the site itself used to house Rochdale Canal Warehouses, Dale street basin and Dale street wharf where canal boats would dock to load and unload cargo.

Full bleed - images right to edge of page is OK for electronic documents, but if you intend to print a hard copy you would need a specialist printer to print pages on larger sheets and then cut down. On ‘normal’ A3/A4 colour printers in uni, minimum margin that is always created is 4.2mm - of paper coloured space.

One of the main design concepts for the Northern Soul Assembly is taken from the specific history of the site and in particular the two routes from the canal that lead through the warehouses and into the wharf.

0FF GRID

With resources running scarce and global warming continuing to worsen, it is only logical to turn to nature and learn how it has adapted and developed throughout time in order to survive. Biomimicry is a method that is becoming ever more popular with architects in the quest to achieve sustainability. My project is a research lab looking into the findings from the ecosystems already existing on the site and also a large public area and cafe for those who have made it to the summit.. I have designed a timber gridshell structure that is lightweight and slots into the landscape without disturbing it and the ecosystems too much. Gridshell forms are a perfect example of biomimicry

LIVERPOOL LIVE LOUNGE

In an ever evolving city it is often hard to spot older, masonry builds as they are knocked down and replaced with something larger pool Live Lounge design is the marry the old and new, allowing us to expand with minimum waste and having the two coexist in a com

For my design i plan on keeping the existing brick building on Jamaica Street as it is in great condition and brings a piece of the sites moving part of the roof on this building will create a double hight entrance space for the Live lounge and this extention will be glas ing area. The existing back door will be used as the entrace into the performance venue. The new build extends along the side of th keeping the south side free for a large outdoor area that will recieve a lot of sunlight in the summer and creating a “L” shaped venu
