It is policy at this racecourse for screens to be erected when a horse requires veterinary treatment on the track. This is to offer some privacy and calm for both horse and vet and does not automatically imply that a fatality has occurred Equine care at Brighton is provided by the Equine Veterinary Hospital at Arundel. My good friend Mart Matthews would agree. As usual he is one of my guests today but this year is a bit special because The Racing Post Quiz Book, Volume 2, which he wrote, is due for imminent publication and if you’re looking for a suitable Christmas gift for anyone who loves racing and indeed Brighton (there’s even a section entitled ‘Oh, I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside’) you’ll never spend a tenner more wisely I’m also pleased to welcome Mart’s colleague Michelle Grainger of Pitch Publishing Ajigolo ran only once at Brighton and failed to trouble the judge, as they say. In fact he failed to trouble the other four runners, as well, but that was no bar to future success Tintagel II had a rare off-day here in 1970 but Lester still wanted to ride him in the Ebor, which he won by quite a long way.
Ian Carnaby
As for my race today, I wish I could tell you the winner I always look for Tony Carroll’s name first but Richard Hannon was thinking of running Ower Starlight
I am delighted to sponsor for the 26th year, though I’m hoping my race will revert to a selling handicap at some stage. I miss old Modest Hope (rated 28) and the way he wore down Martin Pipe’s Highbury Legend in 1998 Martin Pipe told me Highbury Legend would win, I told my old colleague Robert Cooper and between us we told everyone listening to Radio 2. People can be slow to forgive sometimes. I am a creature of habit so there will be champagne and rock for the winning connections and a trophy, together with a DVD of the original Brighton Rock film, for the successful owner. I watch most of the races from the furlong pole and still use the same shop for the rock, the one on the front formerly run by old Seagulls player (and manager) Chris Cattlin. I miss talking football with him and I’d never go anywhere else for the rock There is such a thing as loyalty. Several years ago Chris had a horse with Mick Channon. It was called Ajigalo and won eight races including a Group 2 event at Baden-Baden This is the kind of thing that might crop up in a quiz, especially a Brighton one. All right, it’s quite a bit harder than naming the best colt and filly ever to race here Hethersett and Park Top, I would suggest but what’s the point of a dead easy quiz?
HETHERSETT, PARK TOP ......AND AJIGOLO
The late Bill Wightman was based at Ower Farm and training for Channon wasn’t his only connection with football because he also trained The Goldstone, who’d run just about everywhere else in the south and finally made it to Brighton in 1977 and won for Pat Eddery to a thunderclap of approval Bill was a lovely man with an impish sense of humour “I must say it seemed an ordinary race to me but rather a lot of people seem very pleased!” he said Let’s hope we all have just as much fun today. Be lucky.
