Emergency Procedures for your safety

Horse Welfare Comes First at Brighton

The safety of horse and rider is of paramount importance to Brighton

Racecourse. We have a team of highly qualified vets and doctors following the action at all times and a horse ambulance in attendance at every meeting.

It is policy at this racecourse for screens to be erected when a horse requires veterinary treatment on the track. This is to offer some privacy and calm for both horse and vet and does not automatically imply that a fatality has occurred

Equine care at Brighton is provided by the Equine Veterinary Hospital at Arundel. To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy, please visit our website: www.brighton-racecourse.co.uk

Radios and Mobile Telephones

The use of all types of communication equipment is strictly controlled at all racecourses. Members of the public may not use two-way radios, scanning receivers etc., for any purpose at the racecourse. Mobile telephones may not be used in or near any designated betting area, or for offcourse betting purposes Further details are available from the racecourse office.

Photography

Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the Grandstand & Paddock and Premier Enclosure. Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the Racecourse be used for publication. Flash photography is extremely dangerous where horses are involved and we kindly ask you not to use flash photography anywhere in the Paddock or near the Winners’ Enclosure.

Taxi

A complimentary telephone is available in the Racecourse Reception to book taxis. Alternatively, racegoers can call Streamline Taxis on 01273 202020

It is advisable to book as far in advance as possible to avoid any delay.

HBLB Prize Money

The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £266,980 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from May to August 2023.

Star Ratings Explained

Br

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances)

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating

WEIGHTWATCHER: BATCHELOR BOY won off a handicap mark of 73, his rating is now down 6lb to 67. LONGEST TRAVELLER: JUNGLE FEVER trained by C Johnston, Middleham, 293 miles.

IMPERIOUSITY confirmed himself an improved performer with frontrunning tactics back in use when second at Lingfield 2 weeks ago and he could prove hard to peg back around here. Jungle Fever arrives on the back of a career-best win at Catterick so is feared most.

LONGEST TRAVELLER: RED ALERT trained by T Carroll, Cropthorne, 175 miles.

BIG TIME MAYBE and Red Alert both have an affinity with this course and fought out the finish of a C&D handicap last week. The latter emerged on top that day but Big Time Maybe only gave way in the dying strides and, armed with a 4lb pull at the weights, he has a good chance of turning the tables on Tony Carroll’s charge. Minhaaj has slipped to an attractive mark and also enters calculations, while Desert wouldn’t be without a chance if she puts her best foot forward.

Question marks surround the majority of these and AJRAD is the suggestion. He hasn’t performed badly at Lingfield the last twice and is now 1lb below his last winning mark. He may have most to fear from Whistledown, who produced two of her better efforts of 2022 at this course and a recent spin at Goodwood will have blown away the cobwebs. Lucky Mascot will be a threat if building on her latest C&D effort and, if he lines up here rather than at Thirsk, Kitaab will also be a player

RACE SUMMARY

LETTER OF THE LAW has been in good form since returning from a short break in April and he is one of the more solid options in an open-looking race. Next on the list is Compere, who has been knocking on the door of late and has a good chance of reversing last month’s C&D placings with Rivas Rob Roy on these revised terms. Recent Catterick claimer winner Eagle Eyed Freddie is also shortlisted, while Kondratiev Wave is dangerous to discount having dropped to a potentially very handy mark.
