Good afternoon and welcome to Brighton Racecourse, and to the first day of the Star Sports Festival of Racing.
We have been looking forward to this week all year, and the Brighton Racecourse Team are delighted we are able to spend the next three days with you. Alongside the racing, we also have some entertainment for you to enjoy including a roaming band, Wandering Hands, this afternoon.
We have six action-packed races this afternoon, with our feature race; the Class 4 Carlsberg Danish Pilsner Brighton Mile Challenge Handicap at 4:30pm.
The Brighton Mile Challenge was first run in 1947 and won by Admiral’s Yarn and the Brighton Mile Challenge Trophy is one of our most historic races and steeped in good stories.
The late Queen Elizabeth has twice displayed the trophy at Buckingham Palace. Her Majesty was so proud of the first victory by Talent (1992) she had it cleaned, restored and polished. Set The Fashion ensured her second victory during 1993.
More recent highlights include a first ever dead heat in 2010 when the judge could not split favourite Licence To Till (Kieran Fallon) and the Hayley Turner partnered Lastkingofscotland.
Tony Carroll, so often leading trainer here, saddled four winners on the opening day of the Festival in 2015 amongst them Pyrocumulus (Jim Crowley) in the Mile. In 2019 Tony took the trophy once again when De Vegas Kid scored under Darragh Keenan.
The Covex Kid, highly impressive in success last year for trainer Amy Murphy, was a rare three-year-old winner
This year, 10 runners head to post for the Carlsberg Danish Pilsner Brighton Mile Challenge Handicap, including last year’s second placed horse, the Heather Maintrained English Spirit.
Thank you to our sponsors for their continued support; Star Sports and Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company.
We hope you have a fantastic day and look forward to welcoming you back soon.
We return for more racing action tomorrow for the second day of the Star Sports Festival of Racing; our Ladies Day!
Paul Ellison Executive Director
Brighton Racecourse is part of Arena Racing Company which includes; Bath, Chepstow, Doncaster, Ffos Las, Fontwell Park, Great Yarmouth Hereford Lingfield Park, Newcastle, Royal Windsor Sedgefield, Southwell Uttoxeter, Worcester and Wolverhampton racecourses.

It is policy at this racecourse for screens to be erected when a horse requires veterinary treatment on the track. This is to offer some privacy and calm for both horse and vet and does not automatically imply that a fatality has occurred

Star Ratings Explained
Br
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances)
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating

The two 3-y-os at the top of the weights may dominate this, with the lightly raced CROW’S NEST, who was unlucky not to finish closer on his Newmarket handicap debut, narrowly preferred to last month’s Bath scorer Swift Asset. TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): R Varian (6 wins from 35 runners, 17%) runs COBALT BLUE FANCY THAT: A Carroll won this race in 2015 and 2019. The stable runs POETIC FORCE, REVISION & YOUARENOTFORGIVEN today. LONGEST TRAVELLER: YOUARENOTFORGIVEN, REVISION & POETIC FORCE trained by T Carroll, Cropthorne, 175 miles.
YOUARENOTFORGIVEN had more in hand than the bare margin suggests when beating a subsequent winner at Newbury so is taken to complete the hat-trick. Intercessor is on a workable mark and has a good record on downhill tracks, so is next best ahead of 3-y-o Cobalt Blue, who took a step forward when third at Epsom.

LONGEST TRAVELLER: DE VEGAS KID trained by T Carroll, Cropthorne, 175 miles.
VOODOO RAY scored at this track on his penultimate outing and shaped as if still in top form (went off hard) when third here since, so he’s fancied to resume winning ways at the likely expense of Arlo’s Sunshine, the only one of the others to arrive in form. Vitesse du Son is likely to benefit from the return to this trip, so he’s also considered.

RACE SUMMARY
LOCAL BAY produced his best effort on grass for a while when third at Chepstow last month, finishing with running left, and looks capable of cashing in on his much-reduced turf mark. Optiva Star was runner-up in a slightly deeper 3-y-o handicap than this at Epsom last week so rates the main threat ahead of Heer’s Sadie.
