Good afternoon and welcome to Brighton Racecourse, and to the first day of the Star Sports Festival of Racing.
We have been looking forward to this week all year, and the Brighton Racecourse Team are delighted we are able to spend the next three days with you. Alongside the racing, we also have, the fabulous Ultra Swing band, who will be around the site to keep you entertained.
We have six action-packed races this afternoon, with our feature race; the Class 4 Carlsberg Danish Pilsner Brighton Mile Challenge Handicap at 3.55pm.
The Brighton Mile Challenge was first run in 1947 and won by Admiral’s Yarn and the Brighton Mile Challenge Trophy is one of our most historic races and steeped in good stories.
The late Queen Elizabeth has twice displayed the trophy at Buckingham Palace. Her Majesty was so proud of the first victory by Talent (1992) she had it cleaned, restored and polished. Set The Fashion ensured her second victory during 1993.
More recent highlights include a first ever dead heat in 2010 when the judge could not split favourite Licence To Till (Kieran Fallon) and the Hayley Turner partnered Lastkingofscotland.
Thank you to our sponsors for their continued support; Star Sports and Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company.
We hope you have a fantastic day and look forward to welcoming you back soon. We return for more racing action tomorrow for the second day of the Star Sports Festival of Racing; our Ladies Day!
Paul Ellison Executive Director

KEY Owner Breeding Breeder Jockey Trainer Sponsor Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances)
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating birthplace of horse if not Great Britain

LEWIS CARROLL (real name CHARLES LUTWIDGE DODGSON, 1832-1898) will forever be remembered by those of a certain age, particularly English History & Literature students, as a Guildford-born author, poet, mathematician, photographer and Anglican priest.
“What’s this luminary got to do with horse racing” I hear? Yes, he was the intellectual who nearly 160 years ago famously penned “ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND” and its sequel “THROUGH THE LOOKING-GLASS”, followed by those nonsense offerings “JABBERWOCKY” & “THE HUNTING OF THE SNARK”!
Well, here’s the gist. Ronnie (singer), Declan (horse trainer), John (jockey) and Roy (goalkeeper) are four other wel-known CARROLLS, but the guy with that surname most familiar to BRIGHTON turf diehards over the past 15 years is unquestionably the universally-liked & LAMBOURN-born TONY (26-02-1957).
No relation to LEWIS, I believe, but someone for whom WONDERLAND aptly sums up TONY’s “second home” by the seaside, the scenic “switchback horseshoeshaped track” overlooking the English Channel high above Whitehawk Hill and Roedean School. I wonder if he uses a “looking-glass” as he trawls through the weekly “bible” known as the “Racing Calendar” in search of opportunities for his string of almost 100 horses?
As is common knowledge, Tony is such a major player nowadays down here in “BN2” that his regular long distance raiders from far off Cropthorne, near Pershore, Worcs (WR10) - an area most associated with apples and orchards - have earned their trainer legendary status.
The “Freshfield Road” venue has accommodated a remarkable 428 Carroll runners since 2019 alone, yielding 48 winners, and to quote gifted scribe David Ashforth from a recent RACING POST column: “If only Brighton paid appearance money!”
For the record, his very first Brighton runner as a trainer was MAC’S DREAM (Michael Tebbutt up), 7th of 15 on May 4, 1999 in a £3,184-50 six furlongs maiden handicap, in which the other trainers still in the business today were Gary Moore, John Bridger, George Margarson, John Gosden and Rae Guest.
But Tony had to wait 11 years to celebrate that first training success at Brighton, with one of his favourite horses, KING OLAV. I suppose it had to be a coincidence that Brighton was the same venue where Tony’s racing career got off the ground
as a young apprentice having only his second career mount, 37 years before King Olav’s success, and six days before MORSTON’S famous EPSOM DERBY triumph.
A.CARROLL, claiming 5lb on his boss Pat Taylor’s bay filly QUITE SWEET, comfortably saw off six other “kids” including David Holley, to land a gamble in the £399 Glynde Apprentice Handicap, and that was to be the first of 254 wins in the saddle before he switched to training in the mid-90s. Ask Tony to explain how Brighton racecourse has become an essential part of his life, and he’ll tell you it has been a genuinely natural, thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding, unplanned path to seaside splendour
“I suppose we’ve created our own mini-Goodwood down here because our horses invariably run well at Brighton. Most of the string are not Goodwood standard, but Brighton suits most of them, and these occasions are magical for everyone associated with the yard. It’s like a little Festival for us”, says the 67-year-old.
“My owners and I love the place, they encourage us to run here, and we’ve had a stack of winners. I don’t know exactly how many we’ll run, or how many owners in total will be on the course, but most of them are staying in Brighton all week. I know for instance that ten of the boys are flying over from Ireland.”
CARROLL in his riding days
As this piece goes off to WEATHERBYS racecard printers, I have done my sums. They won’t all be descending on East Sussex, but 34 different Tony Carroll horses appear in the “5-day entries”, making up 52 of the 302 in total for the 18 races over the three days of the Festival!
It would be impossible to mention all the 117 CARROLL winners at Brighton since KING OLAV broke the ice, but one in particular demands a headline…..POUR LA VICTOIRE. This now-retired 14-year-old gelding ran 121 times in a 10 year career, 36 of those races at BRIGHTON.
He won 17 times (11 at Brighton), finished in the first three 54 times; earned £111,802; competed at 20 different tracks as far apart as Ayr and Goodwood; was partnered by 38 jockeys including three champions; and when he bowed out on a winning note three years ago this week, the Brighton management promptly renamed their winning connections room the “POUR LA VICTOIRE” suite!
Finally, since Tony broke his duck as a trainer at Windsor with 25-1 QUEEN OF SHANNON in August, 1996, he has sent 16,212 RUNNERS to the races, bagging a WIN total under both codes of 1,390. To quote MICHAEL PARKINSON: “REMARKABLE”!
Now in sight of his long-held ambition to complete a maiden “calendar century”his best yet is 85 in 2022 - Tony goes into battle at the Festival on 71.

compiled by turf historian JIM BEAVIS, whose book “THE BRIGHTON RACES”, published in 2003, tells the 220 year history of BRITAIN’S most popular seaside “roller coaster” horserace venue.
The one and a half mile long horseshoe-shaped course is one of half a dozen in Britain that do not form a complete circuit.
The first mention of a race at Brighton was in 1713.
Regular organised races began in 1783.
The Prince of Wales (the future George IV) first attended the races in 1784 and became so enamoured with Brighton that the races rapidly became established.
Legend has it that he invented hurdle racing at Brighton while out riding with aristocratic friends. They found some sheep pens which they proceeded to jump.
The course used to extend a further half mile across the golf course towards the sea. This made four mile races possible; such long races were conventional in the 18th century. They started at the winning post and went the reverse way round the track, then looping at the two-mile start and returning the conventional way.
Mile and three quarter races could be run in a similar fashion thanks to a loop at the seven furlong point.
Hurdle races were also held here in the 19th century.
Brighton’s main meeting, always at the beginning of August, formed part of the upmarket Sussex Fortnight, in the week following Glorious Goodwood, concluding with a meeting at Lewes.
In 1966 Brighton was the scene of the first winner officially trained by a woman, Norah Wilmot. The Jockey Club refused to grant women training licences until a legal challenge by another female trainer.
Leading racehorse owner Sheikh Mohammed had his first winner at Brighton racecourse on 20 June 1977 when his filly Hatta won a race here. From that small beginning Arab-owned horses went on to dominate British racing for many years.
The unusual nature of the course suits some horses particularly well. Many will remember the popular grey Roy Rocket winning nine races here. The record stands with the Tony Carroll-trained Pour La Victoire, who won for the eleventh time here in 2021.

None of these can be safely discounted but CHARMING WHISPER is nevertheless a standout contender on the back of an eye-catching effort in a pretty valuable Class 2 handicap at Newmarket’s July meeting This 3-y-o is clearly on the up (winner at Newbury and Yarmouth in June) and he may well have more to offer Optiva Star isn’t the most solid of these by any means but he has to be of interest given his stellar course record, while Blenheim Star and Drink Dry also merit serious respect. 1-2-3:

First run in 1947 and won by Admiral’s Yarn, the Brighton Mile Challenge Trophy is one of our most historic races and steeped in good stories.
The late Queen Elizabeth has twice displayed the trophy at Buckingham Palace. Her Majesty was so proud of the first victory by Talent (1992) she had it cleaned, restored and polished. Set The Fashion ensured her second victory during 1993.
Twelve months later Shikari’s Son was landing a seventh course victory when taking the prize in the hands of Richard Quinn. More recent highlights include a first ever dead heat in 2010 when the judge could not split favourite Licence To Till (Kieran Fallon) and the Hayley Turner partnered Lastkingofscotland.
Tony Carroll, so often leading trainer here, saddled four winners on the opening day of the Festival in 2015 amongst them Pyrocumulus (Jim Crowley) in the Mile. In 2019 Tony took the trophy once again when De Vegas Kid scored under Darragh Keenan.
The Covex Kid, highly impressive in success in 2022 for trainer Amy Murphy, was a rare three-year-old winner

CHOURMO is 2-3 over this C&D and, having caught the eye in a major way when third off this mark at Salisbury 11 days ago, he earns the vote. The 4-y-o certainly won’t have things all his own way, with Clear Justice bidding for the hat-trick and Three Dons having completed his over 1 1/2m here last time and this drop back in trip shouldn’t be an issue. The latter’s stablemate Cryptos Dream, successful at Nottingham when last seen in June, also has claims in a competitive race for the grade.
