KEY Owner Breeding Breeder Jockey Trainer Sponsor Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances)

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating birthplace of horse if not Great Britain

SAMMY DOO? SAMMY DID!

Good afternoon and welcome to Brighton for the 28th running of the Ian Carnaby Handicap

As some of you will know, it used to be a selling race with the winner auctioned afterwards. We’d become accustomed to the cry: ‘No bid!’ but at a meeting (not mine) in 2000 the winner Spark of Life fetched 15,000 guineas - a record for Brighton.

Claiming races are similar but bids are submitted by hand with the successful one ‘drawn from the hat’, so to speak The golden rule with sellers and claimers is: ‘Don’t enter your horse if you’re worried about losing it.’ Back in 1999 William Muir ran Tayseer in a claimer here, he started favourite and bolted up by five lengths in the hands of Martin Dwyer, later a Derby-winning jockey on Sir Percy and now a no-nonsense commentator on Racing TV.

Tayseer was claimed for 10,000 guineas by Sammy Doo Racing and went to Dandy Nicholls He promptly landed two major gambles for Mr Doo and progressed still further, winning the Bunbury Cup at Newmarket and the Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood: not bad for the winner of a Brighton claimer.

I believe Dandy, sadly no longer with us, was the best trainer of sprinters in modern times. He also knew both sides of the claiming coin, losing The Tatling to Milton Bradley after an easy Catterick success. The Tatling went on win another 15 times, including a Brighton triumph and a second in the Prix de l’Abbaye on Arc Day.

It is highly unlikely that any horse contesting my race will scale those heights, though I must say I thought I had the winner worked out this year Amanda Perrett’s Freetodream was a good second over course and distance recently and this looked an ideal opportunity but Amanda preferred Chelmsford two days ago.

I’d hoped he would run and win here, thereby maintaining a Pulborough link, albeit in a very modest way, because Cacoethes, trained by Amanda’s father Guy Harwood, was probably the best horse to race (and win) here after the great Park Top. Cacoethes went on to finish third in the Derby and second in the King George at Ascot, on both occasions having the misfortune to come up against Nashwan

Brighton has always been my favourite racecourse and I envied Doug Marks, who sponsored the Flanagan And Allen Handicap from 1976 onwards. I passed his 25-year spell a while back but I’m not boasting about it. After all, he presented the winning owners with a smart wooden chess set while I offer them a stick of Brighton rock (Very GOOD rock I might add, because I’ve stayed loyal to Chris Cattlin’s shop all these years.)

I seem to remember Chris’s Ajigolo winning at 25/1 at Newmarket after finishing last of 5 here. He should have run it in my seller.

Have a great day.

Having slipped to a potentially very handy mark, SIR OLIVER is taken to strike with Silvestre De Sousa back in the hot-seat. He was a good third off a 14lb higher mark under De Sousa at Chelmsford during the spring and while he hasn’t won on turf for over 2 years, he is effective on fast ground. Dion Baker is an obvious threat on the back of a clear-cut success at Yarmouth and is feared most ahead of Revolutionise and Vinaka.

WEIGHTWATCHER: FARO DE SAN JUAN won off a handicap mark of 82, his rating is now down 5lb to 77. LONGEST TRAVELLER: POP DANCER trained by T Carroll, Cropthorne, 175 miles.

It was a higher-grade handicap in which FARO DE SAN JUAN was a creditable sixth at Newcastle recently and, with a strong pace likely despite the small field, he is taken to resume winning ways. The Defiant is the clear main danger, with Skallywag Bay a shade too high in the weights at present and Pop Dancer needing to bounce back.
