MICHAEL MAINE MEMORIAL RACE PREVIEW
Our feature race this evening looks to be an open and competitive affair. Richard Hannon’s Signcastle City looks to have an excellent chance This son of Dark Angel caught the eye when winning at Bath last month, travelling smoothly into the race and winning with a little bit in hand The four-year-old gelding did not look short of speed that day, so the drop back to a seven furlongs should not be a problem. Signcastle City’s subsequent effort at Newmarket can be forgiven, positioned on the outside of the field, he could never land a blow. Back down in class today, this represents an easier opportunity and there is every chance that Richard Hannon’s charge can land his second victory of the season here.
The smooth travelling Hat Toss really caught the eye on his penultimate start at Newmarket, making eye-catching headway from last place, bypassing the whole field bar the eventual winner who had got first run. A repeat of that effort would see him go close here. He ran another solid race when finishing second on soft ground at Leicester this week, and back on a sounder surface today, which should suit, James Owen’s horse is well capable of winning a race of this nature. He rates as the main danger here.
Assessment could be involved if rediscovering his old form. He was outpaced over six furlongs last time and will be better suited by Chepstow’s stiff seven furlong test. Previously with Sir Michael Stoute, this horse has slightly lost his way this season and thus his handicap mark has fallen - he’s now 3lb lower than his last winning mark. He’s clearly a horse that has had issues but if current trainer Archie Watson has him back on song, this son of Kingman could go well under a positive ride from Hollie Doyle.
King of War deserves an honourable mention, being a course and distance winner who performs consistently in this grade. He ran a great comeback race for his new yard following a 274 day break and could improve on that. However he’s yet to win off a handicap mark this high whereas Signcastle City is still well-treated on the best of his three-year -old form and he is taken to land the spoils.
Words by Mitchell Jones.

Sadly my wonderful husband Mike died from a Brain Tumour in July 2016 aged just 60 years old. We moved to the Chepstow area for an “escape to the country” in lieu of retirement to enjoy gardening and our horses. Finding our dream home with land, stables and a large garden just gave us the “dream” and we moved in November 2012.
After both getting cancer diagnosed within 3 days of each other in February 2015, our dream was shattered. I am still here to keep his memory alive but sadly Mike lost his fight with in July 2016. He loved his garden –especially owning his first sit on mower. He took early retirement so as to enjoy this beautiful home we had found.
Mike and I have been involved with racehorse ownership for 17 years –with small syndicates as well as ownership. Our horse First Mohican, who we had a share of (retired) took us to Royal Ascot –which was an amazing day.
My family – a daughter and son, and their partners are continuing to raise funds for Brain Tumour Research. If you wish to contribute to Brain Tumour Research please follow https://michael-maine.muchloved.com/
I am hoping this race, each year will allow us all to remember such a wonderful, kind and generous man.
Thank you
Sue Maine

Did you know you could celebrate a special occasion with a race named after a friend or relative – for example ‘The John and Joan 40th Wedding Anniversary Maiden Stakes’ or ‘The John Smith 30th Birthday Handicap Stakes’. It’s a great way to enjoy a day out with brilliant memories and you can combine it with hospitality in a private suite or a meal in the restaurant. You can come down to the Parade Ring and choose the ‘Best Turned Out’ horse and also present a prize to the winning owner before enjoying a post-race glass of bubbly. The package also includes photographs of your day and a mention in the racecard and on the big screen. For more details, please email Candice Harper –charper@arenaracingcompany.co.uk
