WELCOME

TO DONCASTER RACECOURSE

Hello and welcome to Doncaster Racecourse for the opening day of Racing League 2022. We would like to thank our sponsor William Hill for their continuous and most generous support. Racing League 2022 kicks off here tonight with seven regional teams competing over six consecutive Thursday evening fixtures at ARC racecourses around the country. The teams will compete for valuable points to boost them up the league table. The team with the highest number of points after the final race will become the 2022 Racing League Champions. The teams are Ireland, Scotland, Yorkshire, The North, The East, Wales & The West, and London & The South. Which team will you be supporting? Go Team Yorkshire! Don’t miss the Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) Parade in the Parade Ring at 5pm which showcases the remarkable versatility of the thoroughbred and the range of activities and opportunities open to racehorses when they finish their racing careers. RoR is British Horseracing’s official charity for the welfare of horses that have retired from racing and we are proud to support them. We have a Face Painter and Balloon Modeler in the Exhibition Hall and a DJ to entertain you throughout the day. We are also delighted to welcome back our friends from Autism in Racing who are in the Family Enclosure with their Mobile Sensory Unit. Racing League will be on the lookout for superfans throughout the day wearing white and grey or team colours and awarding prizes to the biggest team players. Our final Live After Racing raceday is on Saturday 13th August with McFly – one of the best-loved British bands of the 21st century that you won’t want to miss! The four-day Cazoo St Leger Festival takes place 7th – 10th September! This is the highlight of Doncaster’s social calendar and we welcome visitors from all over the country to Town Moor to watch history in the making. Featuring the Cazoo Leger Legends Charity Race on Wednesday, the highly anticipated Style Awards on Thursday, The Cazoo Doncaster Cup on Friday, and of course – the Group 1 Cazoo St Leger Stakes – the World’s oldest Classic on Saturday. It’s only 142 days until Christmas – so time to start thinking about your Christmas celebrations! Christmas Live is perfect for a fun-filled work Christmas do or simply for gathering your friends together for an unforgettable festive night out! You’ll enjoy a live cabaret show with incredible professional dancers, exquisite dining, entertainment village and casino, disco, and a ‘Survivors Breakfast’ at midnight! Tickets for all our upcoming racedays and events are available now at www.doncaster-racecourse. co.uk. We recommend you book early to avoid disappointment. There are 7 races on the card, with 91 declared runners and our raceday presenter Bobby Beevers and resident tipster will be in the Parade Ring at around 5:20pm to run through tonight’s runners and riders and hopefully pick you out some winners! As always, our team here at Doncaster are committed to doing our very best to ensure you enjoy your day and we value any feedback you may have. We hope you have a great day! Star Ratings Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

A parade of retrained racehorses will take place in the main Parade Ring from 5.00pm until 5.15pm. The parade showcases the remarkable versatility of the thoroughbred, as well as the range of activities and opportunities open to racehorses when they finish their racing careers.

1. BRAND OF HONOUR

ridden by Mell Hardy

7-year-old gelding by Mahler Brand Of Honour had an undistinguished racing career, running just twice in point to points. However, his post-racing career has been much more rewarding. Known as Bobby, he hunts with the Derwent and the Middleton and also enjoys arena eventing. In June Bobby and Mell won the RoR prize for the highest placed former racehorse in the 90cm class at Bramham Horse Trials and together, the pair are regulars on Pony Club Teams.

2. CHANGE THE SUBJECT 14-year-old gelding by Maria’s Mon, ridden by Jenny Walker

formerly trained by Richard Guest Breeder – Forging Oaks Llc

In a two-year racing career Change The Subject had four different trainers, including the late Sir Henry Cecil, winning one race at Lingfield in 2011. Since retiring from the track, he and Jenny have taken part in many equestrian disciplines, but he excels at showing and has twice qualified for the RoR National Championships at Aintree. In 2021 the pair took the RoR Championship title at Wensleydale Show. They also compete in dressage, show jumping and finished fourth in their first One Day Event.

13-year-old gelding by Dubai Destination, ridden by Molly Hawkins formerly trained by Brian Ellison Breeder – Kilfrush Stud

3. GLOBAL VILLAGE

Global Village was well known to racegoers at Doncaster during his racing career, running here on several occasions, most notably when runner-up in the 2013 Lincoln. Overall, he was the winner of 10 races from 43 starts with career earnings of £112,152. Retraining in dressage, he and Molly started at Prelim level and have progressed steadily through the grades, securing a top ten placing at the Petplan Area Festivals in 2020 and are now competing at Medium. They recently competed at the RoR Northern Regional Dressage Championships, finishing fourth in the Elementary Championship, and have qualified for the upcoming RoR National Dressage Championships at Novice and Elementary levels.

4. JASIM JUNIOR ridden by Amelia McArthur

9-year-old gelding by Oasis Dream, formerly trained by George Margarson Breeder – Saleh Al Homaizi & Imad Al Sagar In a four-race flat career spanning one season, Jasim Junior never finished in the first three and it was not until he changed disciplines to eventing and show jumping that he found his true calling. He and Amelia have been placed twice so far this year at 90cm eventing and have qualified for the prestigious Brigante Cup series final. The aim is to progress to BE100 level later this year. He left training at two-years-old and despite being bred to run on the flat he adores his jumping and Amelia says he is “a wonderful personality to have on the yard”.

Featured in the parade, are former racehorses doing diverse second careers such as eventing and horseball, as well as those excelling in more traditional RoR activities, such as dressage and showing. Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) is British Horseracing’s official charity for the welfare of horses that have retired from racing. RoR annually stages over 40 separate competition series across 15 different disciplines, catering for all levels of ability, from grassroots to elite. The disciplines include dressage, showing, polo, eventing, show jumping, endurance, hunting and horseball.

TO DONATE 5. KILRUSH GETAWAY

ridden by Amii Hardie

9-year-old by Getaway, formerly trained by Brian Ellison Breeder – Mrs Mary Tynan Phelan Kilrush Getaway ran once in a NH Bumper and once over hurdles for trainer, Brian Ellison. Now competing at British Dressage Novice level, he and Amii have together qualified for Regional and Area Festivals. He is also proving to be a successful show horse in RoR classes and will be heading to Aintree at the end of the month to compete at the Jockey Club RoR National Championships.

6. PEVERIL POINT ridden by David Worthington

7. TOUCH OF FAITH ridden by Jude Worthington

8. XPO UNIVERSEL

ridden by Fliss Stephenson

7-year-old by Canford Cliffs, formerly trained by Henry Tett. Breeder – Denis McDonnell In a short-lived racing career, Peveril Point ran twice without success before being retired from racing in 2018. He was subsequently bought by Jude Worthington with a view to retraining him to compete in horseball for her husband, David. A long-standing member of Team GB, David has captained the national horseball team at both junior and senior level and enjoyed a lot of success with former racehorse Inchloss, who is now retired. Peveril Point is currently competing in Pro Elite Horseball with David, as well as training in dressage and having the occasional day’s hunting with Jude.

8-year-old by Zoffany, formerly trained by Michael Appleby. Breeder – Jusoor Syndicate Touch Of Faith ran three times on the flat, finishing last on each occasion and on his final run in 2017 he was beaten 58 lengths! Not surprisingly, he was deemed too slow to be a racehorse but he has since found his niche in horseball. Bought and retrained by David Worthington, he competed at Pro Elite level in horseball with David before the ride was transferred to his wife, Jude, for her to compete on in the Horseball Ladies League. Touch of Faith, or Tof as he is known, has also done some dressage and is David’s reserve international horse after Peveril Point.

13-year-old by Poliglote, formerly trained by Rebecca Menzies. Breeder – Haras D’Ecouves & Henri De Pracomtal Retired from racing in July 2021, XPO Universel enjoyed a long racing career, amassing total earnings of £104,000 over a period of 10 years. He won four times over hurdles and raced 95 times in all. He is now retraining as a show horse and has qualified for the Jockey Club RoR National Championships at Aintree later this month where he will take his place in both the In-Hand and the Novice Series Championships.

The Racing League’s official racing charity partner Racing to School has supported the learning and development of young people for over 20 years. The charity provides unique, free educational programmes for schools, colleges and riding groups at racecourses, trainers’ yards and studs across Great Britain. Racing to School’s programmes aim to enhance young people’s learning and to inspire beneficiaries to consider being the next generation of racegoers and join its varied workforce. In 2022, the charity plans to work with a record 16,000 young people, with over 20% located within inner cities, deprived areas and in rural isolation. Visit www.racingtoschool.co.uk to find out more about racing’s smallest but most ambitious charity and how you can support our work with young people. Visit us today at the Racing to School stand, where you can talk to our friendly team about life in racing and have a go on the equiciser to see if you have what it takes to be a jockey! Racing to School is a registered charity (1040590)

The Racing League Joker Card

A new innovation in Racing League 2022 will see each of the managers of the seven competing teams having the opportunity to play a Joker on any two of the 42 races. When played, the Joker will double the points won by the two horses representing a team in a given race. The manager will announce his intention to play a Joker in the Paddock, directly before the selected race. This will be done by placing a Joker token alongside the team name on the scoreboard in the Paddock.

Plenty in with a shout in the opener, including MERCURIUS POWER. Successful on his penultimate start at Sandown, he produced arguably his best effort yet when headed late on back at that venue 8 days ago. He can make another bold bid from this sort of mark, with 3-y-o Galiac, now tackling 1m, the thriving Shine On Brendan and Irish-raider That’s Just Dandy heading up the dangers.

LONGEST TRAVELLER: PRINCESS RAJJ trained by J Harrington, Ireland. RACE SUMMARY

It’s easy to be positive about a host in here but 3-y-o FRESH HOPE marked herself down as a filly to follow when sixth in the Sandringham at the Royal Meeting and, having tasted success in a small-field affair at Leicester since, she can prove a 2lb higher mark is within reach back in this bigger-field scenario. The hat-trick seeking Tipperary Moon is feared though, along with Princess Rajj, whilst Ascot Adventure could step up again returned from a break. 1-2-3: 1.FRESH HOPE 2.TIPPERARY MOON (IRE) 3.PRINCESS RAJJ (IRE) KEY colours

HORSE WELFARE COMES FIRST AT DONCASTER At every race meeting at Doncaster our top priority is the safety and welfare of both horse and rider. We have a dedicated team of highly qualified vets and doctors following the action at all times and a horse ambulance in attendance at every meeting. Use of Screens It is our policy to erect green screens around any horse requiring veterinary attention. This does NOT reflect the severity of any injury, but does help to provide a calm environment, in which the vet is better able to treat the horse. Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse!
