TIMEFORMVIEWImpressive when scoring by a wide margin on his debut at Nottingham and had no trouble following up in 10.2f novice at Newcastle. Took form to another level when narrow winner of Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot. Not disgraced back down in trip when fourth in Grand Prix de Paris and this test will suit.

Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

THEME PARK may have disappointed on his first start for new connections at Redcar last month, but he was entitled to need the outing so Nigel Tinkler’s charge can make a winning handicap debut. Escarpment is another venturing into handicaps for the first time so he may emerge as the main danger after an encouraging reappearance, with the consistent Maximilian Caesar rounding off the shortlist

LONGEST TRAVELLER: BATTAAH trained by R Hannon, Marlborough, 184 miles.

All bar one are newcomers, and the market should tell a tale, but MATLOOB cost 6 figures as a yearling and is bred to be very sharp, so he gets the nod as things stand Elite Status has a similar profile, an even more expensive yearling and pedigree all speed. Battaah went off at pretty short odds on debut and shaped quite well, so he’s much respected.

HORSE WELFARE COMES FIRST AT DONCASTER

At every race meeting at Doncaster our top priority is the safety and welfare of both horse and rider We have a dedicated team of highly qualified vets and doctors following the action at all times and a horse ambulance in attendance at every meeting.

Use of Screens

It is our policy to erect green screens around any horse requiring veterinary attention. This does NOT reflect the severity of any injury, but does help to provide a calm environment, in which the vet is better able to treat the horse.

Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse!
