Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

SUZY WALKER OPERATIONS MANAGER
WHAT IS YOUR ROLE WITHIN THE COMPANY? Operations Manager for Doncaster Racecourse
HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED AT DONCASTER RACECOURSE?
20 months. I started as a casual Operations Assistant and this summer I was promoted to Operations Manager. Before this, I spent most of my life in retail, managing pubs and bars.
WHO IS ON YOUR OPERATIONS TEAM?
Our team consists of myself, Michael Capp, Chris Fryer, Daren Cawley, Neil Day, Marc Murrie, Ian Fishwick and the Bodhi team. We all get on really well and work hard.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE WORK MEMORY SO FAR?
Its not necessarily my favourite, but my fondest memory so far at Doncaster Racecourse has to be St Leger Day 2022. We found out on the second day of the festival that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II had sadly passed away
Out of respect, an industry-wide decision was made to cancel Doncaster Cup Day on the Friday while the country went into mourning. St Leger Saturday was rescheduled for the Sunday. The entire team came together, working long hours over the two days to deliver a very different St Leger Day. Watching jockeys, owners, trainers, Doncaster Racecourse and ARC staff, suppliers, sponsors and industry professionals in the Parade Ring on Leger Sunday, bowing their heads during the National Anthem and paying their respects with a minutes silence gave me chills. And still does when I think about it. What we achieved that weekend was amazing and I am incredibly proud of our team.
WHAT DOES YOUR BETFRED ST LEGER WORK WEEK LOOK LIKE?
Busy!! Our team are on-site from the early hours to make sure our racecourse looks top notch for the festival. From building repairs and maintenance, ordering signage, deep cleaning and receiving deliveries of equipment – my team work late into the night. I also coordinate helicopter escorts and chauffeurs for our VIP guests, as well as a multitude of more mundane tasks that need to be completed to ensure the festival runs smoothly and safely.
WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT THE BETFRED ST LEGER FESTIVAL?
I absolutely love the St Leger festival, but honestly, that first glass of wine on Sunday evening, when I can put my feet up and finally rest is the moment I look forward to most. Just sitting back and feeling proud of what we have achieved.
WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF THE RACECOURSE?
My favourite part of the racecourse has to be Box 407 in the Leger Stand. When you stand on the balcony, the views across the racecourse and over Doncaster are beautiful.
WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE DAY OF THE FESTIVAL AND WHY?
My favourite day of the four days is day one. Watching our weeks of planning come together on opening day and our guests enjoying themselves is really fulfilling.
A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO RACING
Allowance The weight concession the horse is given to compensate for its rider’s inexperience
Amateur (Rider) on racecards, their names are usually prefixed by Mr, Mrs, etc. to indicate their amateur license-holder status.
Apprentice A trainee Flat jockey connected to the stable of a licensed trainer. Apprentices have a weight allowance when they ride in races against professional jockeys and can compete for the annual Apprentice title, given to the winner of the most races during the season.
Bar Term used when describing bookmakers’ prices. e.g. ‘4-1 bar two’ means that you can obtain at least 4-1 about any horse except for the first two in betting.
Bit Metal part of the bridle that sits in a horse’s mouth. The reins are then attached to the bit and used by the jockey to control the horse
Blinkers A form of headgear worn by the horse, consisting of a hood with cups around the eyes They are used to limit a horse’s vision and reduce distractions, with the aim of making it concentrate.
Cheekpieces Strips of sheepskin that are attached to the side of a horse’s bridle They partially obscure a horse’s rear vision, with the aim of getting the horse to concentrate on racing.
Clerk of the Course Racecourse official responsible for the overall racecourse management, including the preparation of the racing surface.
Clerk of the Scales Racecourse official whose chief duty is to weigh the riders before and after a race to ensure proper weight is carried.
Colours Jacket (‘silks’) worn by jockey to identify a horse A horse runs in its owner’s colours which are registered with Weatherbys
The colours to be worn by each jockey are shown on racecards.
Colt Male, ungelded horse, up to four years old
Conditions race A race in which horses are allotted extra weight according to factors including sex, age, whether they are a previous winner etc. This is a better-class race for horses just below Group or Listed level.
Connections The owner and trainer of a racehorse
Distance The length of a race
Dam Mother of a horse.
Draw A horse’s starting position in the stalls allotted in races on the Flat. Stall numbers are drawn at random by Weatherbys (except in a handful of top races that allow each horse’s connections, having been randomly selected, to choose the stall number for their horse). A horse with a seemingly advantageous draw is said to be “well drawn”. Stalls are used for Flat racing only.
Filly Female horse four-years-old or younger.
Foal Horse of either sex from its birth until 1 January the following year
Furlong 220 yards (one eighth of a mile). The numbered posts on British racecourses count the furlongs back from the winning post.
Gelding Castrated horse
Going Description of the course conditions under foot.
Hand Unit of four inches in which a horse’s height is measured at the shoulder
Judge Official responsible for declaring the finishing order and distances between horses.
Juvenile Two-year old horse
Maiden Horse which has not yet won a race
Handicap A race where each horse is allotted a different weight to carry, according to the official handicap ratings determined by the BHA Handicappers. The theory is that all horses run on a fair and equal basis - the ‘perfect’ handicap being one where all the runners finish in a dead-heat.
Mare Female horse aged five years old or above Middle Distances On the Flat, races beyond a mile and up to 1m6f are the middle distances. A middledistance horse is one that runs mainly over such distances or is regarded as being suitable for those distances.
Penalty Weight added to the handicap weight of a horse which has won since the weights were published.
Photo Finish Electronic photo device which determines minimal distance in a close finish.
Racecard The runners and riders of the day within this raceday programme.
Rating A measure of the ability of a horse on a scale starting at zero and going into three figures Flat and Jump racing use different scales; the highest-rated Flat horse is usually in the 130s and the top-rated jumper in the 180s.
Schooled Trained to jump.
Sire Father of a horse.
Sprint races Flat races run over a distance of five or six furlongs.
Stewards Enquiry Enquiry by a panel of men and women responsible for seeing rules are adhered to into a race’s running.
Tongue Tie Strip of material tied around a horse’s tongue and lower jaw to keep it from swallowing its tongue, which can clog its air passage. A horse wearing a tongue tie is denoted on a racecard by a small t next to the horse’s weight (t1 indicates that the horse is wearing a tongue tie in a race for the first time)
Under Starter’s Orders Occurs when the race is about to start
Visor Similar to blinkers, but with a slit in each eye cup to allow some lateral vision. A horse wearing a visor is denoted on a racecard by a small v next to the horse’s weight (v1 indicates that the horse is wearing a visor in a race for the first time).
Weighing In/Out Each jockey (wearing his racing kit and carrying his saddle) must stand on official weighing scales before and after the race, so that the Clerk of the Scales can check that the jockey is carrying the correct weight allotted to his horse If a jockey is above the allotted weight before the race, his horse can still compete but must carry overweight. When the weights carried by the winner and placed horses have been verified after the race, there will be an announcement that they have ‘weighed in’. This confirms the race result and at this point bookmakers will pay out on successful bets.
Yearling Horse of either sex from 1 January to 31 December of the year following its birth.

RAMBUSO CREEK left the strong impression that he’s ready to strike when making the frame in a couple of handicaps at Pontefract last month, and he gets the nod with Billy Loughnane in the hot-seat. Strong Johnson is clearly in good nick and looks a big threat, while Alpha Capture also merits consideration eased in class off this reduced mark. A valuable contest in which it could pay to focus on the pair of penalised runners CHIC COLOMBINE and Bellarchi, with preference for the former having taken a significant step forward following a break when scoring on handicap debut at Haydock last week. GrantTuer’s charge arrives on the back of a hat-trick, so she’s sure to give the selection plenty to think about, with Heritage House and Granny Budgie another couple fancied to go well

Raceday preview from Weatherbys
The lucrative Weatherbys Scientific £300,000 2-Y-O Stakes, won in 2022 by Cold Case, has an extremely valuable pot up for grabs and as such, looks set to be yet another ultra-competitive renewal in our 16thyearofsponsoringthecontest.
Andrew Balding has landed two of thepastfourrenewalsofthecontest and sends threein searchof athird successinfiveyearshere.
Clive Cox’s Dragon Leader is unbeaten in three starts.
Perhaps the most interesting of the trioistheInnsOfCourtfillyImperial Express Bought for 175,000gns as a yearling, the most expensive to go through the sales ring for the sire, she is a half-sister to Group 1-winningtwo-year-oldEbroRiver.
She built on her debut outing to finishthirdatNewmarketlastmonth, and the fourth has won since. Oisin Murphywasonboardforbothofthe trainer’s wins but interestingly takes the ride aboard Soldier’s Gold for HugoPalmerhere.
The Soldier’s Call colt landed an Ascot nursery in fine style from a mark of 80 back in July and ran with credit in a big-field nursery at the Ebor Meeting from a 13lb higher markwhenlastseen.
Balding landed the prize in 2021 with El Kabeir colt, Harrow, and it is another son of El Kabeir that heads themarket.
Clive Cox’s Dragon Leader is unbeaten in three starts and could not have been more impressive when landing another valuable sales race at the York Ebor Festival lasttime.Hemadeallupthecentre under Ryan Moore, powering clear in devastating fashion in the final furlong to win by over four lengths. William Buick takes the ride, and he musthaveamassivechancefroma weightofjust8st8lbs.
Duty calls for Ryan Moore however, who instead takes the ride aboard Ballydoyle’sJohannesBrahms
A son of Siyouni, he is allocated the top-weightof9-4inthiscontestbut doeshavethehighestofficialrating in the field at 106. Aidan O’Brien’s two-year-oldfinishedsecondtoBig Evs, since the winner of the Group 3 Molecomb Stakes, in the Windsor

Already proven to be a Group-level juvenile, he clearly holds plenty of abilityanddeserveshisplaceatthe topofthemarket.
HugoPalmer’sBalonD’Orisanother who must carry top-weight in the contest, and he has been highly tried this season with seven runs under his belt already. The son of Kodiac finished second in the Woodcote at Epsom back in June, overalengthinfrontofsubsequent Group 2 winner Haatem in third. His form has taken a drop since, with consecutive midfield finishes in nursery races the last twice, but he is more experienced than many in thefield.
On the other end of the weights is the Amo Racing-owned filly, Komat, who will have to carry just 8-6. Dominic Ffrench-Davis’ filly is a daughter of Cable Bay, who sired 2019 winner King’s Lynn. She ran a stormeratRoyalAscottofinishsixth in the Group 3 Albany Stakes, and theformofthatracehasworkedout extremelywellsince.
She was last seen finishing fifth in the Group 3 Princess Margaret Stakesandlookssuretoappreciate astrongpacetoaimathere.
George Boughey has enlisted the services of Billy Loughnane for the ride on Lambert. The Due Diligence gelding has won his last three in mightily impressive style and, although this looks tougher, he looks the type to keep improving. KevinRyanhasagreatrecordinthis contest, with two winners, a second andathirdinthelastdecade, which makes RoomService an interesting contender.
The son of Kodi Bear was an eyecatcherintheTwo-Year-OldTrophy at Beverley back in June and returnedfromashortbreaktofinish third in a competitive nursery at Yorklasttime.Thesecondhassince gone on to land the Group 3 Sirenia Stakes and Room Service should be in the mix if building on that efforthere.

MAY HILL STAKES
The May Hill Stakes is a Group 2 contest for two-year-old fillies which is run over 1-mile. This year’s running of the race is the 47thsince its inception in 1976. The race was named after the Peter Walwyn-trained May Hill who won the Park Hill Stakes at Doncaster in 1975. It was originally a Group 3 contest until it was elevated to a Group 2 in 2003.
The much-missed Sir Henry Cecil still holds the title of the trainer with the most wins in this event with 12 victories to his name having won it with the likes of Reams Of Verse (1996) and Half Glance (2001).

Handicap newcomer KINGFISHER KING travelled like the best horse in the contest when a close second at Hamilton last time, pulling well clear with a useful rival, and he’s fancied to confirm that potential in a particularly interesting contest. Sisyphus Strength came close to supplementing her Newmarket win atYork and the filly perhaps rates as the main danger, with Burglar also a leading player having seemingly reacted positively to the fitting of a hood last time

HORSE WELFARE COMES FIRST AT DONCASTER
At every race meeting at Doncaster our top priority is the safety and welfare of both horse and rider. We have a dedicated team of highly qualified vets and doctors following the action at all times and a horse ambulance in attendance at every meeting.
Use of Screens
It is our policy to erect green screens around any horse requiring veterinary attention. This does NOT reflect the severity of any injury, but does help to provide a calm environment, in which the vet is better able to treat the horse.

MAFNOOD impressed with the way he travelled and showed improved form in the process when making his third start a winning one at Haydock (1m) 5 weeks ago It was an effort backed up by the clock, and this drop back in trip will hold no fears, so he holds sound claims on nursery bow. Spanish Blaze impressed with his finishing effort when successful at Sandown at the start of the month and is feared, along with another going the right way, Nellie Leylax.

TIMEFORM VIEWCalyx colt who is clearly very effective with give underfoot, gaining his third victory from 5 starts when landing 7-runner Haydock nursery (7f, heavy) early last month. Very much ging the right way and any further easing of the ground will likely aid his cause. Respected TFRHHHHI BHA89
