WELCOME

TO DONCASTER RACECOURSE

Ey Up! Welcome to Doncaster Racecourse for t’ first day o’ SBK Great Yorkshire Chase weekend. We’re reyt glad you’ve joined us ‘ere today for some topclass jumps racing as we celebrate everythin’ Yorkshire! If you’d like to brush up on your Yorkshire dialect, you’ll find The Great Yorkshire Dictionary inside your racecard. We would like to thank our sponsors SBK and Albert Bartlett for their generous support of today’s fixture. Backstage Brass are performing up until the first race at the main County Entrance. Not only are they here to entertain you as you arrived, they’re fundraising towards their operating costs and would really appreciate your support. We’d also like to welcome our friends from Go Racing in Yorkshire who are here today, and make sure you stop by the Exhibition Hall to take on former World Champion and World No. 1 Bob Anderson in a unique 9 Dart Challenge. Have you got what it takes to rival a darting legend? There are 8 races on the card and our raceday presenter Bobby Beevers and resident tipster Kevin Ackerman will be in the Parade Ring at around 11:15 to run through the racecard with you and hopefully pick you out some winners! Due to cancelled meetings around the country, Doncaster is delighted to host two additional Graded races this weekend – the Grade 2 Warfield Mares’ Hurdle (from Ascot) and the Grade 2 Rossington Main Novices’ Hurdle (from Haydock). The Rossington will be run today at 13:30 for £40,000, adding to an already stacked card brimming with high-quality racing, including the Listed SBK Fillies’ Juvenile Hurdle, Grade 2 SBK Yorkshire Rose Mares’ Hurdle, Grade 2 Albert Bartlett River Don Novices’ Hurdle and the Premier Handicap SBK Great Yorkshire Chase. The Warfield Mares’ Hurdle has been added to the card tomorrow, where it will stand as the feature race, with prize money totalling £45,000. Both the Rossington and the Mares’ Hurdle are considered important trials for the Cheltenham Festival. We hope you can join us for The Grimthorpe Chase weekend, which takes place on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd March, and is the final jumps fixture at Town Moor. Run at Doncaster each year, The Grimthorpe Chase is a National Hunt steeplechase that contains 19 jump fences. The distance has varied over time, but currently sits at a little over 3 miles and 2 furlongs. Considered the ultimate endurance test, this race is seen as a trial for the Aintree Grand National in April, as many winners (such as The Last Samuri and Definitely Red) have gone on to be favourites in the Merseyside race. Then on Saturday 23rd March, Doncaster Racecourse opens the British Flat Turf season – the greatest show - with The Lincoln! Sunday 24th March is The Lincoln Family Fun Day with lots of FREE entertainment and activities for the kids! We have lots of live entertainment planned for you after racing during our flat season at our Summer Saturday fixtures. These take place on Saturday 18th May, Saturday 1st June, Saturday 29th June, Saturday 20th July, Saturday 3rd August and Saturday 17th August. Make sure you’ve signed up to our e-newsletter at www.doncaster-racecourse.co.uk and follow us on social media DoncasterRaces to be the first to find out who’s performing! The four-day Betfred St Leger Festival kicks off on Thursday 12th September with Ladies Day; the Doncaster Cup is on Friday 13th September and then the flagship day of the festival – the Betfred St Leger is on Saturday 14th. The festival draws to a close with Leger Legends on Sunday 15th September at our St Leger Community Fun Day – a fun-filled raceday for the whole family to enjoy. We hope you have a great day with us here today at Town Moor and as always, we welcome any feedback you may have. Star Ratings Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Pick the 1st and 2nd. Cover both options with a reverse Exacta which is two bets, 1st and 2nd in either order.

Pick the 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Or try a combination Trifecta which is six bets, 1st, 2nd and 3rd in any order.

LONGEST TRAVELLER: GABRIEL’S GETAWAY trained by A Honeyball, Beaminster, 251 miles. RACE SUMMARY

A winner over C&D last spring, CALICO has returned in good form, runner-up at Cheltenham prior to possibly overdoing positive tactics back there 6 weeks ago. Remaining of interest from this sort of mark, this less demanding test should play to the strengths of Dan Skelton’s charge and he rates a big player. Impressive Kelso winner Traprain Law rates a big danger with further progress anticipated. RACE STATS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (19-24): N Henderson (23 wins from 92 runners, 25%) runs MISTER COFFEY TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): D Skelton (12 wins from 53 runners, 23%) runs SAIL AWAY LONGEST TRAVELLER: SWEET WILL trained by E Mullins & HASCOEUR CLERMONT trained by G Cromwell, both Ireland. RACE SUMMARY

While several of these have appealing claims, FAMOUS BRIDGE is clearly going from strength-tostrength and he is taken to take another step up the ladder by bagging this prize. Nicky Richards’ charge may have most to fear from Forward Plan, who had a handful of these rivals behind when scoring over C&D last time and he remains on a feasible mark. The hat-trick seeking Surrey Quest and Irish-raider Sweet Will both enter calculations, while Erne River is also worthy of consideration.

TIMEFORM VIEWQuickly got his act together over fences last season and progressed again to complete a four-timer in 9-runner handicap chase at Aintree in December. However, well held in a valuable race at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day and, though eased 2lb since, he remains on a stiff-looking mark. TFRHHIII BHA148

TIMEFORM VIEWMade it to the racecourse just twice last season, latterly running his rivals ragged in an 8-runner Ayr handicap (3m, good). Beaten fair and square in handicaps won by Kandoo Kid at Newbury and Forward Plan over this C&D last month, though, and he’s likely to find a few too strong once again. TFRHHIII BHA142

TIMEFORM VIEWEnded last season unbeaten over fences, easily winning 2 1/2m Perth handicap on final start of that campaign. Struggled on return at Cheltenham, though, and while his subsequent fourth of 11 in the C&D handicap won by Forward Plan was more like it, he essentially looks vulnerable. TFRHHIII BHA142

TIMEFORM VIEWTalented but rather frustrating type who remains a maiden following11 starts in this sphere. However, the majority of his efforts over fences have been solid, not least when 1 1/2 lengths second to Forward Plan over C&D last time, and should be in the mix if responding well to first-time cheekpieces. TIMEFORM VIEWBumper/hurdles winner in 2021 who made it third time lucky over fences at Newbury (19.8f, good to soft) in December. Runner-up in a Grade 2 novice at the same course next time and while his mark has suffered as a result (raised 5lb), this step up in trip is an interesting move. TFRHHHII BHA141

TIMEFORM VIEW Likeable and progressive stayer who again found plenty for pressure when emerging on top in the Tommy Whittle at Haydock (25.6f, heavy). Couldn’t grumble with a 4lb rise and he appears to be versatile ground-wise, so he has plenty going for him. TFRHHHHH BHA139

TIMEFORM VIEWReturned to form when landing a 6-runner handicap chase in first-time cheekpieces over C&D last month, enhancing his good record here in the process.
