WELCOME
TO DONCASTER RACECOURSE
The Flat is Back! Welcome to Doncaster Racecourse for the first fixture of the British Flat turf season – The William Hill Lincoln. We are delighted you’ve joined us here today and we would like to thank our sponsors William Hill and EBF for their generous support of today’s fixture.
There are 8 races on the card today with the last race at 5:20pm and our raceday presenter Bobby Beevers and resident tipster Roger Hart will be in the Parade Ring at around 12:40pm to run through the racecard with you and hopefully pick you out some winners!
The main event today is our feature race – The William Hill Lincoln Handicap at 3:35pm worth £150k, which is run over a straight mile and is open to four-year-old runners or older. The race is considered one of the great historic turf handicaps that defines the Flat and has an illustrious roll call and allure for horsemen and punters alike.
The Lincolnshire Handicap was inaugurated at Lincoln’s Carholme Racecourse in 1849 and was run over two miles in August. The race was run in various guises until 1859 when it became set as a mile race in March This Spring meeting was renamed The Lincolnshire Handicap and it continued to be held at Lincoln Racecourse until the track closed in 1964
The 1965 contest was moved to Doncaster and renamed the Lincoln Handicap
To help us open ‘The Greatest Show’ we have stilt walkers and jugglers, our very own ‘Ringmaster Ryan’ greeting guests on arrival dressed in his Ringmaster finery, and there are plenty of photo opportunities in the Exhibition Hall ‘Big Top’
The fun continues tomorrow when Town Moor will ‘Come Alive’ for the Lincoln Family Fun Day supported by our official Fun Day partner for 2024 – Harrison College There’ll be lots of FREE entertainment, circus-themed activities and The Greatest Showman interactive minishows throughout the day for the kids!

Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

The Lincoln Handicap is one of the oldest handicaps on the flat racing calendar. It is run over 1m and traditionally takes place each year on the first Saturday of Britain’s flat turf racing season. A race called The Lincolnshire Handicap was established in 1849 and was run at Lincoln Racecourse until the closure of that track in 1964, when the race transferred to Doncaster and was then known as the Lincoln Handicap.
Remarkably, Charlie Maidment still holds the title as the most successful jockey in the history of the race, having won The Lincoln four times throughout the 1800s. Yorkshireman William Haggas shares the title of the most successful trainer in Lincoln history with Jack Robinson.
The Lincoln tends to be won by a horse with an unexposed profile. Since 2000, eleven renewals of the Lincoln have been won by 4-year-olds. Recent history has also shown it can pay to look away from those horses at the head of the betting.
Since 2011, just one winning favourite has obliged in The Lincoln courtesy of Auxerre (5/2f) in 2019. Nine of the last twelve winners of the race have been won by horses sent off at double-figure odds.
Some classy horses have won the Lincoln en-route to bigger and better things, most notably Addeybb, who was devastating in winning the race six years ago. He went on to win multiple group races throughout his glittering career, including two renewals of the QEII Stakes on British Champions Day.
Last year’s edition was won by the 7-year-old Migration, who became the oldest horse to win the race since 1998. He could return to Town Moor this weekend and attempt to become the first ever multiple winner of The Lincoln in the history of the race.
Joining him could be the likes of last year’s runner-up Awaal and third-placed Baradar Promising 4-year-old’s Liberty Lane and Botanical (both owned by Sheikh Mohammed Obaid) have been at the front of the ante-post markets for this year’s Lincoln for quite some time.
There hasn’t been an Irishtrained winner of The Lincoln since 1995, but Blues Emperor and Chazzesmee could look to end that hoodoo if declared by their respective trainers. Sparks Fly would also be a huge contender if confirmed for the race, given her love for deep ground.

RACE SUMMARY
A change of race for the curtain-raiser to the Turf Flat season and it’s KNIGHT who gets the nod to come out on top back on a more conventional track for his seasonal return. Both his best efforts came when the mud was flying last season, so he’s taken ahead of Charyn, who failed to get his head in front last season but was campaigned solely in pattern company. Last year’s winner Astral Beau should relish conditions so she can fill out third.

RACE SUMMARY
The betting will obviously provide more clues but the suggestion is MYSTICAL ELEGANCE, whose owner/trainer had one primed to go well in this last year and the 2022 winner also sported these silks. Darryll Holland is another who has readied one to go close in this in recent years so his Paddy’s Courage is put forward as second choice ahead of Atherstone Warrior

RACE SUMMARY
Plenty are in with a shout Roger Fell took this 12 months ago and his HARSWELL DUKE is worth siding with given he should strip fitter for a recent Newcastle sixth and also now figures on a good mark after his C&D success in the mud last spring. Gary Moore’s Magic Memories also handles these underfoot conditions really well and could emerge as the main threat ahead of handicap-debutant Helter Skelter and reliable duo Maysong and Titian.

BARADAR was firmly on the up prior to seeming amiss at Ascot on his final outing last season but, freshened up, he’s likely to put up a bold showing on return. Montassib is closely matched with the selection on form, so he’s regarded as a big player along with Orazio.

RACE SUMMARY
LIBERTY LANE was impressive over this C&D on soft at last year’s St Leger meeting and this relatively lightly-raced 4-y-o appeals as one who could have more to come in 2024. Chazzesmee was a good winner of the Irish version of this race on Monday and a 5lb penalty won’t prevent him making a bold bid for a notable double if coping with the quick turnaround Awaal was second in this off an identical mark last year and also makes the shortlist along withThunder Ball

RACE SUMMARY
Several promising types on show here with ANCIENT MYTH marginally preferred to Harper’s Ferry. The latter is the only one of these with an entry in the Derby and he shaped with a great deal of promise on his sole 2-y-o start but Ancient Myth’s debut atWolverhampton was also very encouraging and the Godolphin colt who beat him that day could turn out to be pretty smart. King’s Reign represents the‘boys in blue’in this maiden and he also respected, along withWildWaves.

RACE SUMMARY
David O’Meara has his string in good order and it could be worth chancing his 4-y-o BUSTAAM. He shaped with definite encouragement on his penultimate start at Newcastle in November and, with his subsequent run at that venue best overlooked, he’s of interest back on turf from a career-low mark. At Liberty arrives fit and in-form from the all-weather and he’s a player in refitted cheekpieces Moonlit Cloud and Mrs Meader complete the shortlist.

DESTINADO has been in fine form on the all-weather this year, winning 4 times and pulling clear of the rest when runner-up at Southwell last week, so he is taken to add to his tally back on turf. Chagall hasn’t been seen to best effect on his last couple of starts and is respected, while Eleven Eleven is another who enters calculations
