WELCOME TO HEREFORD RACECOURSE
Welcome to Hereford Racecourse. Happy New Year and welcome to Hereford Racecourse for our first fixture of 2022. I hope it will be the first of many racedays you enjoy with us this year. I am sure many local people enjoyed cheering home Iwilldoit in the Coral Welsh National last week with Ledbury based jockey Stan Sheppard in the saddle. Stan has spent many an hour honing his skills in the saddle out with the Ledbury Hunt and enjoyed much success Pony Racing before turning professional. He is on track for his best ever season and we wish him continued success. It was also wonderful for trainer Sam Thomas enjoying his highest profile winner to date, having achieved the ultimate success in the saddle as a jockey when partnering the prolific Denman to victory in the 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup as well as many other winners before turning his hand to Training. Iwilldoit is owned by Diamond Racing Ltd and the growth and success of racing clubs and syndicates in recent years is one of racing’s success stories. Making racing affordable, appealing and exciting to more and more people can only be a good thing and the newly formed Hereford Racehorse Ownership Club (HROC) is another example of this. If you are looking at ways of spending your Christmas money a lease share in Poniente, in training with Herefordshire based Venetia Williams, will cost you just £299 and includes 2022 ARC Membership gaining free access to 500+ fixtures as well. Further details can be found in this racecard and also online at www.hereford-racecourse.co.uk Look out for Poniente and the HROC members today as the Mare will hopefully be running. It was terrific to see an uninterrupted racing programme over the festive period, with neither extreme weather nor Covid thankfully impacting racing too much. Long may that continue as we step into 2022. Enjoy racing here this year.

Star Ratings Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race. Good chance of being placed. By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
hope.
Unlikely to win but not totally without Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. for novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

RACE SUMMARY Having had the race at his mercy when coming to grief at the last at Market Rasen early last month, NOCTE VOLATUS had little fuss in making amends on his second start over fences at Catterick last week, bolting up by 17 lengths. Unpenalised for that, he’s expected to prove tough to beat. Fellow last-time-out winner Jobesgreen Lad rates the chief threat, ahead of Galtee Mountain and Glasha’s Peak. 1-2-3: 1.NOCTE VOLATUS 2.JOBESGREEN LAD 3.GALTEE MOUNTAIN (IRE) KEY colours
