WELCOME TO HEREFORD RACECOURSE

Welcome to Hereford Racecourse. Welcome to Hereford for a proper afternoon’s Jump racing! Yet again we find ourselves in midst of an unseasonably dry spell. Previously in January we have had concerns about waterlogging whereas this year we have actually been watering over the weekend to maintain ground no quicker than Good. Watering Hereford in January is quite literally unheard of, and comes with its own challenges. Today sees the Eileen Bennett Memorial Hunters’ Chase and we are pleased to welcome Eileen’s family and friends to celebrate the race in her memory. Eileen was a wonderful supporter of Hereford and had a real love of grass roots racing, in particular Point-to-Pointing. She is greatly missed. We also welcome Racing to School, a charity that aims to inspire young minds through the provision of free, interactive and healthy outdoor educational events centred around racing. Teachers and Pupils from Lucton School are here today and we hope they enjoy their visit and the national curriculum work projects that sits so well with racing. We next race on 16th and 27th February and then spring into March with Super Irish Saturday Raceday featuring Six Nations (Eng V Ire) on Saturday 12th March and Ladies Day with live music after racing on Friday 25th March. There is quite literally something for everyone and every budget so do visit www.hereford-racecourse.co.uk to find out more. We have been privy to some exceptional racing at Hereford so far this season and I hope today is no different. Enjoy the buzz, enjoy the fresh air and enjoy the smell of Spring which is not too far away now!

Star Ratings Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race. Good chance of being placed. By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

hope.

Unlikely to win but not totally without Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. for novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

FIRST RACE 1.00 ABOUT TWO MILES (2M 53YDS) FOR NOVICE FOUR YRS OLD AND UPWARDS

THE ROYAL EQUESTRIAN BEDDING NOVICES’ HANDICAP HURDLE RACE (CLASS 4) (GBB RACE) Total race value £9400 x Owners Prize Money. 1st £3631, 2nd £1816, 3rd £907, 4th £454, 5th £280, 6th £280. (Penalty Value £4738.02) Weights raised 2lb and paragraph 34 of the Weights and Handicapping Code complied with where applicable.

RACE STATS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (17-22): K Lee (8 wins from 51 runners, 16%) runs BLACK POPPY TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): R Walford (2 wins from 6 runners, 33%) runs GAMBIE TIEP LONGEST TRAVELLER: STAMINA CHOPE trained by D Roberts, Kenley, 162 miles. RACE SUMMARY

The two with the most appealing claims are BLACK POPPY and Maninsane. Choosing between them isn’t easy, but there is hope that Black Poppy will raise his game a touch now going down the handicap route off an opening mark which, judged on the form of his debut success in a Warwick bumper last spring, looks manageable. Gambie Tiep is most interesting of the remainder. 1-2-3: 1.BLACK POPPY 2.MANINSANE (IRE) 3.GAMBIE TIEP (FR) KEY colours
