HOW TO READ YOUR RACECARD
Handicappers allot ratings to horses oncetheyhave taken partina sufficientnumber of racestoenable the Handicappers to make anumerical assessmentofeach horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weighttobecarried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participantwithan equal chance based on its best recentformunder itsoptimum conditions. Ahorse rated100, forexample, would be set to carry 1lb morethan ahorse rated99(ignoringany penalties or allowances). Theratings published in the racecardfor handicap racesare the ratings thatwereused to calculate the weighttobecarried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps racesthe rating shown is thatofeach runner at the time thatthe entries forthe race were confirmed.Any subsequently published change to arating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.for novicesteeplechasers, the latest hurdle race rating maybeshown until such time as the Handicappers allot aseparatesteeple chase rating.Such ratings areprefixed by the letter h. OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED You must be 18 or over to place a bet Youmay be asked to provide proof of your age when placing abet If youcannot producethis your bet will not be accepted

Welcome to Hereford Racecourse.

Welcome to Hereford for our much-anticipated Season Opener ELY Memorial Fund Charity Raceday.

ELY is a local charity that offers financial help for funeral costs when young ones are tragically killed in road traffic accidents in Herefordshire. We first planned this raceday for March 2020 however Covid put a stop to that and we are pleased, 2½ years later, to help raise funds and awareness of their excellent charitable and road safety work in the local community. A particularly warm welcome to Ange Tyler, and I hope guests dining in the Rusty Bridge charity restaurant will enjoy their day.

Thank you as well to Venetia Williams and owners for kindly parading their stable stars Make your way to the Parade Ring for 12:20 to see L’Homme Presse, Funambule Sivola, Chambard, Royal Pagaille and Poniente, our very own Hereford Racehorse Ownership Club horse! Membership costs just £299 and includes a lease share in Poniente, lots of exclusive news and events and ARC membership

Today is the start of our busiest season yet with 15 fixtures between now and Thursday 6th April 2023, and there is so much to look forward to The new Day At The Races ticket offers exceptional value at just £19.50 including admission, racecard, drink and a warm pie and is available for all racedays up to 7 days in advance. With the cost-of-living crisis and ever spiralling lifestyle expenses this demonstrates that a day at the races can offer great value and we hope that many people enjoy this ticket throughout the season. If today’s sales are anything to go by, it will be very popular!

I would also like to welcome today’s owners, thank them for running at Hereford and wish connections of all horses a safe and enjoyable day.

It’s good to be back once more.

RANCO has started well for his new stable and this is a thin handicap, so he’s a solid choice. Getaway Cory is the only other who arrives in good form, so he’s a clear danger, while a revival from Pottlerath would put him in the mix.
