WELCOME TO HEREFORD RACECOURSE

Welcome to Hereford for this afternoon’s racing. The Jump racing season is in full swing now and I hope you will enjoy marvelling at the bravery of today’s jockeys and athleticism of the horses. If you haven’t done so, it is worth taking a walk down to the rail on the Rusty Bridge lawn to stand, watch and marvel at the partnerships close up during a race. The clattering of hooves, chatter of jockeys and noise as they jump is pretty spine tingling. Today sees us bid a fond farewell to Nathan Williams, our Head Groundsman, as he leaves for pastures new. Nathan has been involved at Hereford since 2016 and we thank him for his significant contribution to the business and wish him well for the future. Thank you also to today’s sponsors for their generous support. The first race is sponsored by the Hereford Racehorse Ownership Club, whose horse Poniente is hopefully running later today. Membership costs just £299 and includes a lease share in Poniente and 50% equal share of prize money, lots of exclusive news and events and ARC membership with free entry to over 500+ racedays. For further information please visit www.hereford-racecourse.co.uk and why not start your Christmas shopping early with a membership gift for your loved one! We recently launched the new Snaffles Restaurant on the first floor of the grandstand which offers stunning elevated views over the racecourse. To find out more visit the website, a table booking here also makes a great Christmas present! Our biggest raceday of the season, Christmas Jumper Raceday on Saturday 10th December, is just around the corner. All restaurant, private hospitality and popular Day at the Races tickets have sold out already but advance tickets can be purchased online from £19. Enjoy racing today. Best wishes.

Star Ratings Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race. Good chance of being placed. By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

hope.

Unlikely to win but not totally without Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. for novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Though he failed to land a blow switched to handicaps on his final 2 starts of last term (too free on both occasions), he will have every chance here eased in class/the weights. Maxcel has also proved something of a let-down the last twice but it would be no surprise were he to get back on track now handicapping. Plumpton winner-Cornicello also enters calculations, along with Borak. 1-2-3: 1.NATTY NIGHT 2.MAXCEL 3.CORNICELLO (FR) KEY colours

TIMEFORM VIEW Fairly useful on Flat for William Muir and built on hurdles debut promise when landing a Taunton maiden (16.5f, soft) in January. Held in a couple of handicaps since but resumes on a 3lb lower mark and this also represents an ease in grade. TFRHHHHH BHA107

TIMEFORM VIEW Winner of a 17.7f Fontwell novice in September, despite hanging badly right on the run-in. Somewhat paradoxically, she looked even more wayward in cheekpieces (retained here) when fourth at Warwick since and while the switch to a right-hand track can help, she’s opposable on this handicap debut. TIMEFORM VIEW Fairly useful on the Flat in Germany and off the mark at the seventh attempt in this sphere when accounting for 6 rivals in a Plumpton handicap (2m, good) last month. Result may have been different had the runner-up not hit the final flight but he’s only up 1lb and should give another good account. TFRHHHII BHA103
