Hereford Racecard - Monday 14th October

Page 1

Welcome back to Hereford Racecourse for our Season Opener and thank you to our race sponsors for their support today.

It barely feels like we closed the gates in May and are back again! But we have lots to look forward to over the 2024/2025 season, including The Richard Layton Charity raceday on Wednesday 27th November, in aid of We Are Farming Minds, Midlands Air Ambulance & The Injured Jockey’s Fund, you can find out more about the day and the reasons behind it on our website. Other calendar highlights include our ever-popular Christmas Jumper Day which takes place on Saturday 21st December, and we see Ladies Day move to our final evening fixture of the season, on Friday 9th May where we will have live music on the lawns after racing. Our fixture list is displayed in your racecard so be sure to get these dates in your diary.

Throughout the season we have our Day at the Races packages (admission, drink & racecard) available which offer great value, but these do sell out fast so would encourage you to get booked in via the website for your desired fixture. As well as our Snaffles restaurant opening on feature days, we also offer Premier Viewing in this facility for all fixtures in between, which makes the perfect base for the day, again all available via the website www.hereford-racecourse.co.uk

With attention turning back to today’s action, I would like to take the opportunity to wish all Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and Stable Staff the best of luck with their runners at Hereford and beyond as we see the jumps season getting back into full swing

Before our next fixture on Monday 4th November, we welcome St Michael’s Hospice here for their Fireworks display on Saturday 2nd November, details are include in your racecard and tickets can be purchased in advance through their website, it promises to be a dazzling evening of entertainment for all the family!

We hope you have a great day with us and see you again in early November.

Best wishes,

HORSE AND JOCKEY WELFARE AT HEREFORD

Nothing matters more to us when racing than the safety and welfare of both horse and rider. Central to that is the track itself and our groundstaff do everything in their power to provide an optimum racing surface. On duty today we also have a dedicated and experienced team of highly-qualified Vets, Doctors and Paramedics following the action at every stage Their key responsibility is to monitor and provide care to the competitors throughout their time at the racecourse. The locations and vehicle movements of these skilled specialists during racing are designed to provide a rapid response to any incident across the site. We also have a high-specification horse ambulance in attendance at every fixture to enable safe transport of a horse from the track to our on-site veterinary treatment facility for further treatment, or to the nearest equine referral hospital

It is our standard practice to erect screens around any horse or jockey requiring attention on the course as this provides privacy and a safe, calm environment in which to accurately diagnose and treat the patient as necessary. Please do not assume the worst if screens are erected around a horse We are fully committed to minimizing risk in our sport, to dealing professionally and efficiently with any injury, and to maintaining the highest possible quality of care for the horses and jockeys racing here today. To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy, please visit our website www.hereford-racecourse.co.uk

Star Ratings Explained

Selected to win the race

Good chance of being placed By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

Unlikely to win but not totally without hope

Can be given little or no chance.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating for novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED You must be 18 or over to place a bet

You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet

An open staying handicap chase with marginal preference for INVICTUS ALLEN, who opened his account at Uttoxeter in July and shaped as if still in good order when third at Fontwell just over 5 weeks ago. Selectivelistening was possibly amiss last time, but he would be a major threat judged on some of his earlier exploits now sent chasing so heads up the dangers, with Radharc Na Slaine and No Promises also not discounted, too.

CRAVEN BAY got back on the up on his debut for Toby Lawes when a comfortable scorer at Warwick and a 4lb rise in the weights doesn’t look sufficient to prevent him from following up. Honey I’m Good arrives in great nick from chasing so could emerge as the main danger back over the smaller obstacles Mourzouk and Shaving also need factoring into this competitive handicap too.
