Hereford Racecard - Tuesday 12th November

Page 1

Welcome to Hereford Racecourse for an afternoon of jump racing, we are delighted to welcome our sponsors and hospitality guests today including invited guests of Sunshine Radio.

We were thrilled to see Matt Sheppard and the team enjoy success with Famoso, winning the finale here last Monday. The race was named for the launch of his new book‘Confessions of a Slow Two Miler’, and the win and celebrations with family and friends really completed a dream day for the team.

If you would like to purchase Matt’s book then visit the online Weatherby’s shop (www.weatherbysshop.co.uk). It will also make a perfect Christmas gift! And speaking of Christmas, the Injured Jockeys’Fund stand here with us today is the perfect place to stock up on Christmas cards, gifts and much more, with all proceeds going to such a worthy cause, do pay them a visit next to the winner’s enclosure.

We next race here on Wednesday 27th November, the Richard Layton Charity Raceday, in aid of We Are Farming Minds, Midlands Air Ambulance and the Injured Jockey’s Fund Tragically, Richard Layton, who ran Dewdales Hope Farm in Bodenham, took his own life last year following a lengthy mental health battle. His family are determined to raise awareness and support those in the local Herefordshire farming community who may similarly be suffering from anxiety, loneliness and depression. Combining the organisers’farming and racing backgrounds, their aim is to‘Make Mental Health the Front Runner’and we do hope you will be able to attend and show your support to them at the end of the month.

We hope you enjoy your day with us today, best of luck to all connections with runners today. Best wishes,

Star Ratings Explained

Selected to win the race

Good chance of being placed By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

Unlikely to win but not totally without hope

Can be given little or no chance.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating for novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Melton Mossy is one of just two last-time-out winners

The eight-year-old arrives here on the backofasecondplacingatFontwelland remains5lbslowerthanhislastwinning mark, although that did come back in September2022.

Melton Mossy is one of just two lasttime-out winners in the field, with Evan Williams’ five-year-old successful at Ludlow only five days ago. He also won good-ground handicaps at Worcester andNewtonAbbotthroughthesummer andhaswonthreeofhissixstartsforhis currenttrainer.Hefinishedreallystrongly to win an amateur riders’ contest under today’s jockey and is clearly in good health, although he is burdened with a 7lbs penalty for that recent success. Conditionslookfavourableandheought to go well again, provided the race doesn’tcometooquickly.

The Grace Harris-trained Karakoram also arrives here on the back of a win at Ludlow, with the nine-year-old successful over 3m in late-October. He got the better of a protracted battle with the runner-up (disappointed since), with the pair a long way clear andhehadG’DayAussiebackinfourth, Opera King in fifth and Pollyonesock finishedinseventh.

Nigel Twiston-Davies’ Opera King wears a first-time visor this afternoon, whilst Express Surprise sports first-time cheek-pieces for Clive Boultbee-Brooks. He shaped as though he needed the run at Wincanton last month and ran wellundersimilarconditionstotheseat Stratford during the summer, so could wellbouncebacktoform.

State Of Fame is another who looked like he would improve for last month’s reappearance, whilst New Found Fame actually featured prominently in the 2022-2023editionofJumpers To Follow, having won a Uttoxeter novices’ hurdle on his racecourse debut. Kerry Lee’s eight-year-old needs to build on his recentfourthatthistrackjusteightdays ago.

Greenways makes his first start for Tom Symonds (previously trained by Dominic Ffrench-Davis), whilst the fouryear-old Scintillante and the returning Izzy’sGreycompletethefield.
