Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

WHERE TO BET There are a variety of places to bet at the course; The Tote has selling points throughout the racecourse - easily identified by the Tote Betting or totepool signs. The bookmakers are located in front of the grandstand in the ‘Betting Ring’. The bookmakers display their odds for each race and compete to offer the best price to customers. These are fixed price bets and the amount of your winnings will be printed on your betting slip. Search around to get the best price for your selection. Mimimum Stakes The Tote has a minimum bet of £2. The bookmakers vary but if they have a minimum it will be shown on the boards displaying their odds. If in doubt – just ask.

CRESTWOOD was held up off a slow pace here last time out whilst still looking green. He may be able to progress now he starts life in handicaps off a mark of 60. RACE SUMMARY

DAMASCUS FINISH makes most appeal after shaping well on debut at Windsor in a race that has worked out well. He still looked green and should be able to improve. He’s also got a high draw which has been important in recent meetings on the straight course here. Foden shaped well at Wolverhampton on his debut and he can’t be ruled out. Shabano makes some appeal on his debut too. 1-2-3: 1.DAMASCUS FINISH (IRE) 2.FODEN 3.SHABANO (GER) KEY colours

The draw could be crucial again and SHYJACK has been running creditably this year and he should go very close from his stall near the stand rail. CANOODLED was probably a little unlucky with how the race went at Leicester after an outsider got loose on the lead and she couldn’t real her back in time.
