Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
WHERE TO BET There are a variety of places to bet at the course; The Tote has selling points throughout the racecourse - easily identified by the Tote Betting or totepool signs. The bookmakers are located in front of the grandstand in the ‘Betting Ring’. The bookmakers display their odds for each race and compete to offer the best price to customers. These are fixed price bets and the amount of your winnings will be printed on your betting slip. Search around to get the best price for your selection. Mimimum Stakes The Tote has a minimum bet of £2. The bookmakers vary but if they have a minimum it will be shown on the boards displaying their odds. If in doubt – just ask.

RACE SUMMARY JAFFATHEGAFFA remains a maiden following 14 attempts, but he is clearly effective on an easy surface and this step up in trip could be just what the doctor ordered. Gary Moore’s charge gets the nod ahead of Kayfast Warrior, who is feared on the back of last week’s winning turf debut at Thirsk but he has different conditions to contend with here. It’s fair to say that GAVLAR is not the force of old and he has finished behind Bird For Life on the all-weather course here on his last 2 starts. However, those efforts suggest that he is capable of exploiting a lowly mark such as this and the 10-y-o is taken to turn the tables on Mark Usher’s charge now returned to turf. RACE SUMMARY
PROFOUND ALEXANDER ran very well in defeat on the polytrack here last month and she looks the most likely winner switching back to turf. She ran with credit at Goodwood with ease in the ground and should get off the mark today. Damscus Finish has two creditable efforts to his name and looks a danger. The newcomers Ringo Starlight and True Force may prove to be the best alternatives.
