Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
WHERE TO BET There are a variety of places to bet at the course; The Tote has selling points throughout the racecourse - easily identified by the Tote Betting or totepool signs. The bookmakers are located in front of the grandstand in the ‘Betting Ring’. The bookmakers display their odds for each race and compete to offer the best price to customers. These are fixed price bets and the amount of your winnings will be printed on your betting slip. Search around to get the best price for your selection. Mimimum Stakes The Tote has a minimum bet of £2. The bookmakers vary but if they have a minimum it will be shown on the boards displaying their odds. If in doubt – just ask.

COTAI HERO took a big step forward at Chester last month when going very close. He should be able to continue his progression here and get off the mark at the third time of asking. Jastar has a similar profile and is steadily improving, so he has to be taken seriously. Amirat Alward is an interesting newcomer and any market support for her would be worth noting. 1-2-3: 1.COTAI HERO (IRE) 2.JASTAR 3.AMIRAT ALWARD (IRE) KEY colours

Ralph Beckett has had a good season with his 2-y-o runners and BE LUCKY MY SON could become another winner for the yard here. COLONEL FAULKNER ran well at Kempton given he raced prominently up with a strong pace. He looks handicapped to win and this looks a less competitive race than last time. Sir Edward Elgar is unexposed and represents a top yard on handicap debut so he has to be taken seriously. Broxi is on an attractive-looking mark and could offer some value at a bigger price.

RACE STATS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (16-21): M Johnston (83 wins from 407 runners, 20%) runs ALLEGRANZA TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): M Johnston (11 wins from 101 runners, 11%) runs ALLEGRANZA LONGEST TRAVELLER: ALLEGRANZA trained by M Johnston, Middleham, 270 miles. RACE SUMMARY ARTHUR’S ANGEL ran very well in a better race than this at Sandown last month. He drops in grade and won over C&D back in May so he makes most appeal today. Oriental Art is a likely improver having shaped well in her two handicap runs to date and she should go close. Beautiful Crown has each-way claims returning to polytrack. 1-2-3: 1.ARTHUR’S ANGEL (IRE) 2.ORIENTAL ART 3.BEAUTIFUL CROWN KEY colours
