Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
WHERE TO BET There are a variety of places to bet at the course; The Tote has selling points throughout the racecourse - easily identified by the Tote Betting or totepool signs. The bookmakers are located in front of the grandstand in the ‘Betting Ring’. The bookmakers display their odds for each race and compete to offer the best price to customers. These are fixed price bets and the amount of your winnings will be printed on your betting slip. Search around to get the best price for your selection. Mimimum Stakes The Tote has a minimum bet of £2. The bookmakers vary but if they have a minimum it will be shown on the boards displaying their odds. If in doubt – just ask.

MIQUELON has improved for the fitting of cheekpieces lately and his latest success over C&D was convincing, so he’s an obvious choice to go in again. Animal Instinct, although off for a year prior to this, remains with potential trying this trip for the first time, so he’s regarded as the main threat ahead of Il Bandito. 1-2-3: 1.MIQUELON 2.ANIMAL INSTINCT 3.IL BANDITO (IRE) KEY colours

RACE STATS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (16-21): R Hannon (89 wins from 557 runners, 16%) runs SIR RUMI TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): M Johnston (12 wins from 78 runners, 15%) runs BASILICATA LONGEST TRAVELLER: BASILICATA trained by M Johnston, Middleham, 270 miles. RACE SUMMARY The ones at the top of the weights could be worth focusing on here, with the vote going to MY FRANKEL. Sir Michael Stoute’s charge ran too badly to be true at Ascot last month and, with his mark easing a shade further, he can get back to winning ways. 5-time C&D winner Petite Jack is feared most having bounced back to form from out of the blue at Wolverhampton last time, ahead of Shandoz. 1-2-3: 1.MY FRANKEL 2.PETITE JACK 3.SHANDOZ KEY colours

Once again it’s that time of year for Ben’s race day, it’s hard to believe it’s been ten years since we lost him. Everyone who knew him will remember that cheeky smile and sense of fun. Ben was an apprentice Waterman & Lighterman tragically killed at work on the Thames. We have lost many good friends from the river and today we can raise a glass in their memory.
I would also like us all to raise a glass for Alex Hickman. A fellow Waterman and Lighterman who did so much to help and train young apprentices on the Thames to become Captains. We sadly lost Alex in December. Once again from all the family, thank you for being with us on Ben’s race day.
