Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race HHHHI Good chance of being placed HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating

RACE SUMMARY

Jamie Osborne’s HAZEL BEAR shaped well on her first run when a C&D third last month and is fancied to build on that now and open her account at the chief expense of Aurora Dawn who also has better days ahead of her judged on her promising debut Kempton third. Wolverhampton-fourth Insolente and newcomer Grain of Hope are two more to consider in a fair novice.

BROXI went down only narrowly over C&D last week and seems highly likely to go well again, so he appeals as a solid option. Free Solo has to be respected under a penalty in his hat-trick bid, with Meng Tian another to consider having been eased 2lb for his Chelmsford return.

RACE SUMMARY

VISION OF HOPE has been much improved since switched to handicaps and she did well to complete the double despite being lit up early over C&D last time, so she’s an obvious choice to complete the hat-trick. Pablo Prince arrives in good order and is feared most, although Engrave is handicapped to win if she’s capable of building on her recent return to form 1-2-3:

VILLALOBOS is going the right way and scored with more in hand than the bare margin suggested at Chelmsford last time, so he makes plenty of appeal in the follow-up bid up against more exposed types. The hat-trick seeking Come To Pass should give another good account and his stablemate Fly The Nest can’t be ruled out.
