Veterinary Care
Horse welfare is a priority at Lingfield Park. At every meeting there are two specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all the horses in action. One vet is present at the start of each race and during the race follows the runners in a vehicle. Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys. The second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents. In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
WHERE TO BET There are a variety of places to bet at the course; The Tote has selling points throughout the racecourse - easily identified by the Tote Betting or totepool signs. The bookmakers are located in front of the grandstand in the ‘Betting Ring’. The bookmakers display their odds for each race and compete to offer the best price to customers. These are fixed price bets and the amount of your winnings will be printed on your betting slip. Search around to get the best price for your selection. Mimimum Stakes The Tote has a minimum bet of £2. The bookmakers vary but if they have a minimum it will be shown on the boards displaying their odds. If in doubt – just ask.

Raceday preview from Weatherbys It is a real pleasure to be sponsoring two races across the card this afternoon at Lingfield, including the opening Weatherbys & Birdie Calendars Open National Hunt Flat Race over two miles. Of those with racecourse experience, By The Grace sets the standard for Nicky Henderson on account of her second at Southwell back in May. Although the winner, as well as those in behind, have done little to enhance the bare form, it was a run filled with promise as she was perhaps just held back by experience on the day.
By The Grace should come on plenty on her second run. Alderflug gelding Seaside Legend is amongst the most experienced in the field, with two runs under his belt for Paul Nicholls. The five-year-old chased home a smart Jonjo O’Neill runner on debut in November of last year but was unable to build on that when fourth at Fontwell in February, with the post-race report revealing he bled from the nose. He has had a second wind operation since last seen and may need the run here. Minella Miracle was denied by a neck in his last Point-to-Point start in Ireland and the winner has boosted WEATHERBYS RACEDAY PREVIEW
that form when winning both of his bumpers in impressive style. Thomas Gallagher’s five-year-old was very keen and did plenty wrong when third on debut at Lingfield but does hold ability so could have a part to play if learning to settle. She’s A Lady was well beaten in a pair of bumpers for George Baker and makes her stable debut for Mark Usher here. Meanwhile, both Inspector Maigret and D’Ambonnay must improve greatly from their debut efforts to get involved here. Noel Williams’ Wonder King travelled well in the main part of the race on debut at Worcester but dropped away quickly in the straight. Of the newcomers, Solid Silver is very interesting for Sir Mark Prescott as the yard is four from seven in bumpers over the last five years, including two from two this season. The Kendargent mare is a halfsister to seven-time winner on the flat, Hector’s Bere, and must have solid claims on debut for a smart operation, with Sean Bowen in the saddle. Alan King has had just the one bumper winner this season, but his I’d Go Maniac has a nice profile; the dam a French hurdle winner who is a half-sister to smart Graded French winner, Saint Goustan Blue. We are also looking to forward to sponsoring the Weatherbys
Stallion Book Novices’ Handicap Chase later in the afternoon, a Class 5 event over just short of three miles in which six go to post. The weights are headed by Bobalot, and the six-year-old has undergone wind surgery since a weakening away fifth Ffos Las when last seen in May. He was a winner on handicap hurdle debut on seasonal return last term at Chepstow from a mark of 103, so could appear well treated from a mark of 99 if the switch to fences ignites a return to form. Brandislova developed into a consistent performer for Lucy Wadham at the back end of last season, winning two of her last five and finishing runner-up on the other three occasions. The seven-yearold got off the mark over fences at Fakenham in March, showing a big engine to win by over four lengths despite some not-sofluent jumping. She then showed a tendency to jump out to her left when second at Huntingdon, so a return to a left-handed track here at Lingfield will see her to better effect, just 4lbs above that last winning mark. Anthony Honeyball’s Captain Claude got off the mark in mightily impressive fashion at Ffos Las in March, running away a 23-length winner from a mark of 77. He backed that up with a good second hiked up in trip to close the campaign from a 10lb higher mark and still appeared WEATHERBYS RACEDAY PREVIEW
Brandislova could take a fair bit of stopping on the front end under Bryony Frost. plenty progressive. The six-yearold was very keen when third on reappearance and no doubt will come on hugely for the run, but that was only two days ago and this chase debut could just come too soon after a run in testing conditions on Sunday. Williamdeconqueror is still winless under rules but did improve for the application of cheekpieces on his final two starts of the campaign last term. Harriet Dickin’s seven-year-old posted a career-best over fences at Warwick when last seen, finishing fifth in a big-field handicap but beaten just under a length by the eventual winner. Cheekpieces are retained here, and he is a very strong stayer at the trip with an experience edge over a few of these. Both Dysania and Wide To West must race from out of the handicap here, and the former is another who searches for a first victory under rules. Peter Bowen’s eight-yearold did place in a couple of similar staying handicap chases at the turn of the year but was well behind Williamdeconqueror when last seen and has a bit of ground to make up on that rival. Martin Keighley’s Wide To West showed little in four starts over hurdles last term and must find improvement here over fences.

RACE SUMMARY It’s probably fair to say that KLITSCHKO was a shade disappointing on the whole in his three runs over hurdles last season, given the impression he created when winning a bumper at Huntingdon on debut. However, there’s a strong sense that there’s much better to come from this 5-y-o, particularly now that he ventures down the handicap route off a potentially handy opening mark.
