Welcome & Meet The Team
Welcome to Newcastle Racecourse for the inaugural Racing League Racenight, sponsored by William Hill. My thanks go to the organiser of the Racing League and William Hill. I would like to wish their Directors, Management and guests an enjoyable and successful evening of racing. I would also like to extend my thanks to the sponsors of all the Racing League teams. The Racing League is an exciting new team-based competition, beginning this evening and taking place over the next six weeks. Every Thursday, 12 teams will compete for the 600 points on offer across a six-race card, bidding to become the Racing League champions. Every race within the competition is worth a huge £50k in prize money, with the Racing League champions also collecting a winning team bonus. For full competition details, visit: www.racingleague.uk. We have an evening full of entertainment for all the family, including exhibitions, face painting, food stalls, and LIVE music from Amy Lauren alongside some of the finest DJ’s and producers in Newcastle. We hope you also enjoy our Retraining of Racehorses parade which will be taking part in the parade ring at 5.35pm. Please follow directional traffic signage to ensure a safe and comfortable journey from the racecourse this evening. LA Taxis has a rank onsite where taxis can be collected, or you can call them on 0191 287 7777. Star Ratings Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race. Good chance of being placed. By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. Can be given little or no chance.
Official BHA Ratings Explained The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

ROR PARADE Come down to the Parade Ring at 5:35pm to see the ex-racehorses parading and find out more about their new careers below! Amroth Bay 17yo, Sire – Alfora, Dam – La Bella Villa
Ridden by his owner Sophie Brown (Showing – Working Hunter attire) Sophie has owned Amroth Bay since he retired from Dan Skeltons in 2015 at the age of 11, “I rode him and looked after him in training, he was also the first winner I ever led up! He has since had a super second career in showing where he has qualified for The Jockey Club RoR National Championshipsheld at Aintree every year since retiring! This year at the age of 17, he has qualified for the Tattersalls RoR challenge final and RoR veteran final at the RoR National championships and has also qualified for Horse of the year show in the working show horse class”
Durbanville 9yo, Sire – Black Sam Bellamy, Dam – Kealshore Lass
Ridden by his owner Sarah Morley (Showjumping) Durbanville ran at Newcastle back in December 2016, his first ever time on a racecourse. Sarah has had him for one year so far, in that time she has slowly retrained him and he has proved a pleasure. “I have retrained him with eventing and workers hunter classes in mind. He has been to a couple of competitions and taken all on board I have asked of him. He loves to please and has a wonderful outlook on life. He is still very green, but just starting to get some miles on him and let him see different places and experience different things.” On July 18th at Bishop Burton College, the combination did a combined training dressage and showjumping competition coming 2nd over all and 3rd for the NHS staff series.
Robben Rainbow 7yo, Sire – Delegator, Dam – Sally Can Wait
Ridden by his owner Sophie Brogden (Eventing) Sophie purchased Robben Rainbow from Solway Racehorses in August 2020. “He had raced a few days prior to arriving so we gave him some down time to begin with then started on his re training. He is showing promise in all three phases of eventing and we won on our first trip out which was quite exciting! We have qualified for the RoR dressage championships taking place at Aintree in August which I’m really looking forward too. My plan is to hopefully affiliate with British eventing next year. He is one of the easiest, kindest horses that I have owned and a real pleasure to be around.”
Kisumu 9yo, Sire – High Chaparral, Dam – Arum Lily
Ridden by his owner Lauran Scott (Showing) “I was extremely lucky to have been given the opportunity to rehome Kisumu, from the wonderful Micky Hammonds Racing, where he had a successful and respected career both over hurdles and flat. He had 53 starts in his career including 5 here at Newcastle, unfortunately no win but was placed 10 times. However his heart, and commitment kept the faith of his trainers. Kisumu’s last race was 20th April 2021, and he began his new life with me out of racing on 1st May 2021. Due to his staggeringly handsome looks and flamboyant paces, Kisumu will turn his hoof to a spot of RoR showing, this is the discipline we wish to progress in together. Since arriving home 10 weeks ago, Kissy has had the opportunity to relax, and find the fun again in ridden work. We have enjoyed pleasure rides, showjumping clinics, a touch of dressage… and lots of cuddles! He has been a pleasure to work with in every way, a true gentleman. I am so looking forward to our future together”.
Triple Play 22yo, Sire – Tagula, Dam – Shiyra
Ridden by owner Becky Stewart (Riding Club) Becky has owned Triple Play for the past eight years, in that time he has taken her from being terrified of jumping a small cross pole to competing at numerous National Championships. “He has evented up to BE100, hunted, represented the local riding club many times & played the donkey in a live Christmas nativity production safely transporting the Virgin Mary for seven shows. On the yard he is a firm favourite for his good manners and calm nature. No one should be fooled by this act as in the saddle he can still be cheeky and fresh when the mood takes him. His favourite thing to do is XC & he likes to go fast or very fast! At the age of 22 he is still fit, keen and enjoys going out competing, he won his class at his last outing at Park End Equestrian Centres Eventers Challenge. We have some more local showjumping competitions entered, also we will do some hunter trials when they restart where we will go too fast but have a lovely time of it! I am also hoping to get back into RoR showing at Blair Horse Trials this August. Triple Play is an all round amazing Former Racehorse who shows just how much life they have after racing, I plan to allow him to continue doing what he loves for as long as possible”.

Another competitive handicap in which LORD NEIDIN makes most appeal. He returned from his second wind surgery with a win at Pontefract last month and could build on that tonight. He’s already proven on an artificial surface and should go close. Bonneval has found just one too good in his last three starts and he has to be respected. Atheeb and Crownthorpe may offer some each-way value.

HORSE WELFARE Here at Newcastle Racecourse nothing matters more to us than looking after the horses that make us the North East’s Premier Racecourse. We do everything in our power to ensure that we provide a racing surface of the highest quality and we take every conceivable care to minimise the chances of horses incurring any injury whilst here. Regrettably, as in any highly competitive sport, there are occasions when something goes wrong and horses have to be given the very best veterinary care. There are three Veterinary Surgeons here today to ensure that should any horse need help they will be attended to within seconds of any incident occurring. Their first priority is to make a rapid diagnosis and to help them do this our groundstaff team will erect screens around any horse that needs attention. Once the diagnosis is made, one of our horse ambulances will attend the scene and will transport the horse back to the stables where further treatment and assessment can be undertaken. Occasionally, it may be that the nature of the injury is such that a horse is unable to make a recovery. If this is the case the Veterinary team may take the decision to put the horse down straight away. In these circumstances we should remember that the horse’s welfare comes first and that this option is kindest for the horse. To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy please visit our website www.newcastle-racecourse.co.uk
