WELCOME & MEET THE TEAM
Epatante winning last year’s Betfair Fighting Fifth Hurdle
Welcome to Newcastle Racecourse for today’s Betfair Fighting Fifth Hurdle Day. Whether you’re a first time visitor or a seasoned racing enthusiast, we hope you have an enjoyable experience with us today. My thanks to go to today’s race sponsors Betfair, Weatherbys, Living North and The Peacock Family. I would like to wish their Directors, Management and guests an enjoyable and successful day of racing. We have a wonderful day of racing ahead along with entertainment from the band of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers for you all to enjoy. The 2020 Champion Hurdle winner Epatante was a very impressive winner of last year’ s Grade 1 Betfair Fighting Fifth Hurdle and Nicky Henderson’s mare returns to defend her crown in our feature race this afternoon. Paul Nicholls’ unbeaten youngster Monmiral should pose the biggest threat although last years runner-up Sceau Royal and Silver Streak aren’t discounted lightly in what looks another thrilling renewal. Please follow directional traffic signage to ensure a safe and comfortable journey from the racecourse this afternoon. We have shuttle buses running after the last race to both Regents Centre and Four Lane Ends Metro Stations. LA Taxis have a rank onsite where taxis can be collected, or you can call them on 0191 287 7777. From the team and I here at Newcastle Racecourse, we wish you all an enjoyable and successful day at the racecourse, Good luck! Paul Elliott EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Star Ratings Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

PREVIEWS TODAY’S WEATHERBYS’ SPONSORED RACES
Mr Glass leads them home at Haydock Park in March
Weatherbys are proud to be sponsoring two races on this afternoon’s Betfair Fighting Fifth Hurdle card, starting with the opening contest, the Paul Ferguson’s Jumpers To Follow Introductory Juvenile Hurdle, in which six three-year-olds go to post. There are two previous winners in the line-up, the first being the Dan Skelton-trained Too Friendly, who showed a fine turn of foot to win at Stratford back in early-October. A non-runner in Wetherby’s Listed Wensleydale Juvenile Hurdle, his form was let down to some degree in that very same race by Oceanline (had finished second at Stratford), but he looked a bright prospect on debut and Bridget Andrews takes the ride. Oceanline’s trainer Alan King is represented by Huntingdon winner Twilight Twist, who was rated 13lbs inferior to Too Friendly on the Flat, but made the best possible start over hurdles, when having too much finishing speed for Saint Riquier. The runner-up gave the form a boost when finishing runner-up in a Grade 2 at Cheltenham and the pair set a fair standard. Of the four debutants, Bamboo Bay and Johnny Boom would look the more interesting. The former is a Camelot colt, who won a Roscommon handicap for Joseph O’Brien and is making his first start for the Phil Kirby team, who introduced a nice juvenile at Wetherby on Wednesday. He looks to have plenty of size about him, so ought to take to jumping, and any market support could prove significant. The latter is a New Bay gelding, who was a winner on the Flat for Richard Fahey and is now in the care of Brian Ellison. He came from a long way off the pace when runner-up at this track on his final start for Fahey, when only just denied over 10 furlongs. Six also take their chance in the Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk ‘The French Furze’ Novices’ Hurdle, a race which was won by subsequent Gold Cup winner Native River back in 2014. Rose Dobbin took the 2017 renewal with Coole Hall and her Captain Quint makes a quick reappearance, having won at Hexham just 10 days ago. Runner-up in his Irish Point, this longer trip shouldn’t pose any problems, provided that the race doesn’t come too soon. He faces a much stiffer test here, however, and Mr Glass is likely to be a warm order, to land the prize for Paul Nicholls and Sean Bowen, who team up in the feature contest with the unbeaten Monmiral. This imposing son of Sholokhov won two bumpers last term and ran out an impressive winner on hurdling debut at Chepstow last month. This longer trip should suit and he is likely to prove difficult to beat, before he goes up in grade. Of the remainder, Marble Sands could be the biggest threat, following an encouraging debut in what looked an above-average contest at Lingfield. The grey son of Martaline has some good bumper form to his name and probably would have won last time, but for making a fairly significant error at the final flight. Ridden patiently, he was doing his best work late on, so ought to relish this longer trip, and in receipt of 5lbs from the previous winners, he should go well for the Fergal O’Brien stable. HORSE WELFARE Here at Newcastle Racecourse nothing matters more to us than looking after the horses that make us the North East’s Premier Racecourse. We do everything in our power to ensure that we provide a racing surface of the highest quality and we take every conceivable care to minimise the chances of horses incurring any injury whilst here. Regrettably, as in any highly competitive sport, there are occasions when something goes wrong and horses have to be given the very best veterinary care. There are three Veterinary Surgeons here today to ensure that should any horse need help they will be attended to within seconds of any incident occurring. Their first priority is to make a rapid diagnosis and to help them do this our groundstaff team will erect screens around any horse that needs attention. Once the diagnosis is made, one of our horse ambulances will attend the scene and will transport the horse back to the stables where further treatment and assessment can be undertaken. Occasionally, it may be that the nature of the injury is such that a horse is unable to make a recovery. If this is the case the Veterinary team may take the decision to put the horse down straight away. In these circumstances we should remember that the horse’s welfare comes first and that this option is kindest for the horse. To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy please visit our website www.newcastle-racecourse.co.uk

EILEEN PEACOCK MEMORIAL
E I L E E N P E A C O C K (193 6 – 2020 ) During the past 35 years or so Eileen and Bill Peacock enjoyed entertaining many friends, co-owners and trainers in the ‘Gazon’ Box at Newcastle racecourse. Sadly with her passing that can no longer be the case so it is to recall the happy memories of such days that husband Bill and sons Tim and Chris have sponsored this race today in her name. Doing so also afforded an opportunity to thank all those at the racecourse who over the years, and in particular more recently David Williamson, Mike Elliott and Amanda, for all their help in making such days so successful and enjoyable.

The Band is the only remaining band in the British Army that wears the Fusilier cap-badge and iconic red and white hackle and as such played a major role in the events celebrating the 50th anniversary of the formation of The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers in 2018. These events included Freedom Parades in Newcastle, Bury, Salford and Rochdale, and a Beating Retreat in the moat of the Tower of London. The Band performs to military and civilian audiences around the North East each year and over recent years has performed in venues such as Durham Cathedral, the Sage Gateshead, Hexham Abbey, Newcastle Cathedral, Alnwick Castle and St James’ Park Football Stadium. In addition to local events throughout the year, the Band deploys on a 16-day Annual Camp. The opportunity of having the whole band together for a continuous period allows a higher level of training and sets the band up for the rest of the year. It also allows the band to play in venues and at events a little further from home than they normally would. Over past years the band has conducted Annual Camps in Germany, Cyprus, Romania, Northern Ireland, Edinburgh, Portsmouth, Woolwich and, earlier this year RAF Cosford, the base from where the Band performed at the Tower of London, Windsor Castle, the National Arboretum and the Shrewsbury Flower Show. Members of the band are also able to break down into smaller ensembles such as a Brass Quintet, a Saxophone Quartet, a team of Fanfare Trumpets and a traditional Dixie Band. These smaller ensembles are often called upon to play for formal military functions. Recently the Brass Quintet had the fantastic opportunity to play for the British Embassy in Tel Aviv, Israel. Please follow the band on Facebook where you will find out more about our future events and our recruiting opportunities: www.facebook.com/fusilierband

THE FERRY MASTER is lightly raced over fences in the context of a race like this and, having shaped as if he’d strip fitter for his reappearance, he’s well worth a chance to resume progress and get back to winning ways. There are numerous others with credible claims, however, notably Dingo Dollar and the highly likeable Aye Right. 1-2-3: 1.THE FERRY MASTER (IRE) 2.DINGO DOLLAR (IRE) 3.AYE RIGHT (IRE) KEY colours

FIGHTING FIFTH HURDLE WE LOOK BACK AT SOME OF THE MEMORABLE WINNERS THAT HAVE HELPED SHAPE THE BETFAIR FIGHTING FIFTH HURDLE INTO ONE OF THE COUNTRIES LEADING HURDLE RACES.
HISTORY
The Fighting Fifth Hurdle was established in 1969, and the inaugural running was won by the Fulke Walmyn-trained Mugatpura. The title refers to the nickname of the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers - “The Fighting Fifth”. In the year prior to the race’s launch, the regiment was amalgamated with three others to form the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. Formerly classed at Grade 2 level, the Fighting Fifth Hurdle was promoted to a Grade 1 in 2004, and it is now the first top-grade hurdle race of the British National Hunt season. The Fighting Fifth is the first leg in the Road to Cheltenham, a series of races which includes the International Hurdle at Cheltenham and the Champion Hurdle Trial at Haydock Park, and culminates in the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.
1976, 1977 & 1979 BIRDS NEST
The winner of 19 hurdle races, Birds Nest won three renewals of the Fighting Fifth Hurdle. He also won three Bula Hurdles, the Christmas Hurdle and two runnings of the Scottish Champion Hurdle, beating some of the best hurdlers of the time. He ran six times in the Champion Hurdle finishing second in 1976 and third in 1980 and has been described as the best hurdler never to win the Champion Hurdle.
1998 & 1999 DATO STAR
The winner of the Champion Bumper at the Festival in 1995, Dato Star went on to win back-to-back renewals of the Fighting Fifth for Malcolm Jefferson. He also won the Grade 1 Christmas Hurdle in 1999.
1978 & 1980 SEA PIGEON
Truly the horse of a lifetime. In a career which lasted from 1972 until 1981 he competed in eighty-five races, winning an incredible thirty-seven times under both codes for trainers Jeremy Tree, Gordon Richards & for Peter Easterby. In addition to his brace of wins in the Fighting Fifth, he won back-to-back renewals of the Champion Hurdle in 1980 & 1981, the Scottish and Welsh Champion Hurdles, back-to-back renewals of the Chester Cup in 1977 & 1978 and the prestigious Ebor Handicap in 1979 making him arguably one the most versatile racehorses in modern times.
1989 KRIBENSIS
1972, 1973 & 1974 COMEDY OF ERRORS
One of the most successful horses in the 51 year history of the Fighting Fifth Hurdle having won it three years in succession between 1972 and 1974. In 1973 Comedy Of Errors won his first Champion Hurdle, beating Bula who had won the race in 1971 and 1972. He finished runner-up to Lanzarote at the 1974 Festival but returned to regain his title in 1975. The 1970’s really were a decade full of top class hurdlers making the Fred Rimelltrained gelding’s achievements all the more spectacular.
By the Derby winner Henbit, Kribensis was sent into training with Sir Michael Stoute in Newmarket - no doubt with a career on the flat in mind. But it was over hurdles where he really excelled winning the Triumph Hurdle in 1988. The following season he became the only horse to win the Fighting Fifth, Christmas Hurdle and Champion Hurdle in the same season - a trio of races considered to be the Triple Crown of Hurdling. In 2008/09, Punjabi came close to matching Kribensis’ feat, winning the Fighting Fifth and Champion Hurdle, but came up short in the Christmas Hurdle. Kribensis is one of only three horses, along with Persian War and Katchit, to have won the Triumph Hurdle and Champion Hurdle during their career.
2017 & 2018 BUVEUR D’AIR
Unbeaten in two starts in his native France, Buveur d’Air established himself as one of the greatest hurdlers in recent memory. Since 2015 he has won it all. His back-toback wins in the Fighting Fifth have been added to with two Champion Hurdles, an Aintree Hurdle, a Christmas Hurdle, a Punchestown Hurdle and not forgetting three Contenders Hurdles which seemed to be his regular warm up for the Champion Hurdle in March. By the end of the 2021 season he had amassed prize money of £1.23 million.

FIVE AND SIX-YEAR-OLDS

It shouldn’t be a shock to read that 8 of the last 10 winners of today’s feature race had finished 1st or 2nd on their most recent start. Only Irving bucks this trend having fallen prior to winning here in 2014 before finishing 4th prior to regaining his title in 2016. On the whole Grade 1 races do tend to attract the best horses. Cornerstone Lad was the lowest rated winner in 2019 off an official rating of 148 whilst Buveur d’Air was the highest rated in both 2017 and 2018 off a lofty mark of 169. Go Native sprung a 25/1 surprise in 2009 but since then those towards the head of the betting had held sway. Four favourites and three second favourites have landed the spoils since then with the other two winners at a modest 6/1. That was until Cornerstone Lad popped up at 16/1. Buveur d’Air proved a fly in the ointment when winning as a seven-year-old in 2018. Overall, five and six-year-olds have the best record having won six of the last ten renewals. Younger winners are rare but older winners do pop up - Sea Pigeon was 10 when he won here in 1980! Nicky Henderson is the winning most trainer in the race’s 51 year history having won it 6 times - Landing Light (2001), Punjabi (2008), My Tent Or Yours (2013), Buveur d’Air (2017, 2018) & Epatante (2020). Paul Nicholls, Donald McCain and Noel Meade are three notable dual winners.
CONCLUSION The unbeaten Monmiral is an interesting contender for Paul Nicholls. A Gr1 winner last time, he ticks lots of boxes. But it is worth pointing out that only four 4yos have won this race since 1969 - Countrywide Flame being the last in 2012. Last year’s winner Epatante holds obvious claims for Nicky Henderson who has a marvellous record in this race. She could only finish 3rd on her final start in the Irish Champion Hurdle and is a 7yo but that age group have a far better record winning 9 renewals, the last of which was Buveur d’Air in 2018. That fact combined with the 7lb mares allowance that she receives may well tip the scales in her favour.
SHORTLIST: EPATANTE MONMIRAL
