Welcome to Newcastle Racecourse for the Eider Chase raceday.
My thanks go to today’s race sponsors Vertem for their generous sponsorship of today’s races, and their continued support of the racecourse
The marathon test will see horses jumping a total of 26 fences We have some National winners declared for this year’s Vertem Eider Chase including Mighty Thunder (Scottish National 2021) and Bushy Park (North Yorkshire National 2023) with some horses making a 720mile round trip to run in the 4m1f contest.
The more local Brian Ellison-trained Sam’s Adventure bids to repeat his 2021 Eider victory while Christian Williams aims to repeat his excellent training performance in last year’s Eider with Kitty’s Light.
Myself and the team hope you enjoy the action wherever you may be watching and hope that you all stay safe and well and look forward to welcoming you back to High Gosforth Park in the near future.
Good Luck!

Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

HORSE WELFARE
Here at Newcastle Racecourse nothing matters more to us than looking after the horses that make us the North East’s Premier Racecourse We do everything in our power to ensure that we provide a racing surface of the highest quality and we take every conceivable care to minimise the chances of horses incurring any injury whilst here.
Regrettably, as in any highly competitive sport, there are occasions when something goes wrong and horses have to be given the very best veterinary care.
There are three Veterinary Surgeons here today to ensure that should any horse need help they will be attended to within seconds of any incident occurring Their first priority is to make a rapid diagnosis and to help them do this our groundstaff team will erect screens around any horse that needs attention. Once the diagnosis is made, one of our horse ambulances will attend the scene and will transport the horse back to the stables where further treatment and assessment can be undertaken. Occasionally, it may be that the nature of the injury is such that a horse is unable to make a recovery If this is the case the Veterinary team may take the decision to put the horse down straight away In these circumstances we should remember that the horse’s welfare comes first and that this option is kindest for the horse
