I am delighted to welcome you all to Newcastle Racecourse for the Seaton Delaval Stakes, the first day of the JenningsBet Northumberland Plate Festival My thanks go to JenningsBet and SKOPES Menswear for their generous sponsorship of today’s races.
I would like to wish their Directors, Management and guests an enjoyable and successful afternoon of racing The Seaton Delaval Stakes is the opening of the historic three-day Plate meeting, and offers a great introduction to the exciting days of racing and entertainment that lie ahead
Today’s feature race is the Seaton Delaval Handicap Stakes, a Class 2 worth £35,000, which looks very competitive. The race is named after both the local village in Northumberland and a horse by the same name, victorious in the 1893 Northumberland Plate.
Tomorrow, we have the £50,000 JenningsBet in Pontefract Gosforth Park Cup over five furlongs, and then later on the card we stage the £60,000 JenningsBet in Shiremoor Hoppings Fillies’ Stakes, which is a Group 3 event and has attracted a line-up of top quality fillies
This week also celebrates the Racing Welfare – Racing Staff Week, serving to recognise people working in the sport who make our days at the races possible Ahead of racing today, alongside four other racecourses, we are hosting a Racing Welfare charity race for stable staff, giving more than 50 riders the chance to experience the thrill of riding in a race
A strict traffic management system is in place throughout the festival, please follow directional signage and police instructions to ensure a safe and comfortable journey to and from the racecourse Full details are available from the racecourse website or by calling 0191 236 2020. LA Taxis have two dedicated ranks based at both entrance and exit points to ensure a safe and comfortable journey home
From the team and myself here at Newcastle Racecourse, we wish you all an enjoyable and successful day at the racecourse

Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

HORSE WELFARE
Here at Newcastle Racecourse nothing matters more to us than looking after the horses that make us the North East’s Premier Racecourse We do everything in our power to ensure that we provide a racing surface of the highest quality and we take every conceivable care to minimise the chances of horses incurring any injury whilst here.
Regrettably, as in any highly competitive sport, there are occasions when something goes wrong and horses have to be given the very best veterinary care.
There are three Veterinary Surgeons here today to ensure that should any horse need help they will be attended to within seconds of any incident occurring Their first priority is to make a rapid diagnosis and to help them do this our groundstaff team will erect screens around any horse that needs attention Once the diagnosis is made, one of our horse ambulances will attend the scene and will transport the horse back to the stables where further treatment and assessment can be undertaken.
Occasionally, it may be that the nature of the injury is such that a horse is unable to make a recovery
If this is the case the Veterinary team may take the decision to put the horse down straight away In these circumstances we should remember that the horse’s welfare comes first and that this option is kindest for the horse
To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy please visit our website www.newcastle-racecourse.co.uk
