Welcome to All-Weather Championships Finals Day
Welcome to Newcastle Racecourse and All-Weather Championships Finals Day. We are delighted that you could join us here to celebrate the end of what has been another fantastic season throughout the winter.
We have over £1,000,000 in prize money available, today marks the richest day of racing on an all-weather surface in Europe on what is one of the finest all-weather tracks in the world. Today’s racing is complimented by the £395,000 All-Weather Vase fixture at our sister course Lingfield Park whilst there is also £200,000 available for racing on the turf at Bath, the racecourse’s richest ever fixture.
Our thanks must go to all of the racehorse owners, trainers, jockeys and racing staff who have taken part in Season 10 of the All-Weather Championships, as well as those who have supported race meetings today here at Newcastle, Lingfield Park and Bath.
Equally, we thank our sponsors, who have been tremendous supporters of the All-Weather Championships this season as well as across this afternoons fixtures at Newcastle and Lingfield Park, in BetUK, Spreadex Sports and Talksport.
Jockeys have set the All-Weather Championships alight this year, with the race to the Great British Racing sponsored Champion Jockey title likely to go down to the wire today. At the time of going to print Daniel Muscutt leads Kevin Stott by just two wins, with both of them riding on Good Friday at Lingfield Park and Newcastle respectively.
Despite only starting his professional riding career in November, 17 year old Billy Loughnane has emerged as a star of the sport this winter and will be crowned All-Weather Champion Apprentice at Lingfield Park this afternoon with a record number of wins since the award was introduced in 2019.
The ARC £1,000,000 Bonus has been a new initiative this season, designed to reward the most consistent performers across ARC’s four all-weather racecourses, Lingfield Park, Southwell, Newcastle and Wolverhampton. We have been delighted to see monthly Horse of the Month prizes awarded over the course of the season, and our congratulations go to Grant Tuer and the connections of Walking on Clouds, who are awarded the £100,000 Horse of the Year prize today
We would like to wish you all the very best of luck this afternoon, and hope that you have a fantastic afternoon’s racing here at Gosforth Park.
Congratulations once again go to All-Weather Champion Trainer Michael Appleby who today will win his sixth consecutive title, and his seventh overall with a record tally, beating his previous best of 59 in 2021. Equally, Godolphin will once again be crowned Champion Owners, a title that they have held every year since Season 2 of the All-Weather Championships in 2015. awchampionships.co.uk

RACING KNOWLEDGE
All-Weather (AWT)
An artificial racing surface. There are six All-Weather racetracks in Britain (Chelmsford, Kempton, Lingfield, Southwell, Wolverhampton and Newcastle) and one in Ireland (Dundalk), and they stage race meetings throughout the year There are three types of surface; Fibresand, Polytrack and Tapeta.
Apprentice A trainee Flat jockey connected to the stable of a licensed trainer Apprentices have a weight allowance when they ride in races against professional jockeys and can compete for the annual Apprentice title, given to the winner of the most races during the season.
Bar Term used when describing bookmakers’ prices, e.g. ‘16-1 bar’ means that any horse not mentioned in the list is priced at 16-1 or greater.
Bit Metal part of the bridle that sits in a horse’s mouth. The reins are then attached to the bit and used by the jockey to control the horse.
Blinkers A form of headgear worn by the horse, consisting of a hood with cups around the eyes. They are used to limit a horse’s vision and reduce distractions, with the aim of making it concentrate.
Cheekpieces Strips of sheepskin that are attached to the side of a horse’s bridle They partially obscure a horse’s rear vision, with the aim of getting the horse to concentrate on racing.
Clerk of the Course Racecourse official responsible for the overall racecourse management, including the preparation of the racing surface.
Clerk of the Scales Racecourse official whose chief duty is to weigh the riders before and after a race to ensure the proper weight is carried.
Colours Jacket (‘silks’) worn by the jockey to identify a horse. A horse runs in its owner’s colours which are registered with Weatherbys The colours to be worn by each jockey are shown on racecards. Conditions race A race in which horses are allotted extra weight according to factors including sex, age, whether they are a previous winner etc This is a betterclass race for horses just below Group or Listed level.
Draw A horse’s starting position in the stalls allotted in races on the Flat. Stall numbers are drawn at random by Weatherbys (except in a handful of top races that allow each horse’s connections, having been randomly selected, to choose the stall number for their horse) A horse with a seemingly advantageous draw is said to be “well drawn” Stalls are used for Flat racing only.
Filly Female horse four years old or younger.
Furlong 220 yards (one eighth of a mile). The numbered posts on British racecourses count the furlongs back from the winning post.
Handicap A race where each horse is allotted a different weight to carry, according to the official handicap ratings determined by the BHA Handicappers. The theory is that all horses run on a fair and equal basis - the ‘perfect’ handicap being one where all the runners finish in a dead-heat.
Mare Female horse aged five years old or above
Middle Distances On the Flat, races beyond a mile and up to 1m6f are the middle distances. A middle-distance horse is one that runs mainly over such distances or is regarded as being suitable for those distances.
Racecard The runners and riders of the day within this raceday programme. Rating A measure of the ability of a horse on a scale starting at zero and going into three figures. Flat and Jump racing use different scales; the highest-rated Flat horse is usually in the 130s and the toprated jumper in the 180s.
Sprint Races Flat races run over a distance of five or six furlongs
Tongue-Tie Strip of material tied around a horse’s tongue and lower jaw to keep it from swallowing its tongue, which can clog its air passage. A horse wearing a tongue-tie is denoted on a racecard by a small t next to the horse’s weight (‘t1’ indicates that the horse is wearing a tongue-tie in a race for the first time).
Visor Similar to blinkers, but with a slit in each eye cup to allow some lateral vision A horse wearing a visor is denoted on a racecard by a small ‘v’ next to the horse’s weight (‘v1’ indicates that the horse is wearing a visor in a race for the first time).
Weighing In/Out Each jockey (wearing their racing kit and carrying their saddle) must stand on official weighing scales before and after the race, so that the Clerk of the Scales can check that the jockey is carrying the correct weight allotted to their horse. If a jockey is above the allotted weight before the race, their horse can still compete but must carry overweight
When the weights carried by the winner and placed horses have been verified after the race, there will be an announcement that they have ‘weighed in’. This confirms the race result and at this point bookmakers will pay out on successful bets.

RATINGS EXPLAINED
Selected to win the race
Good chance of being placed
By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
Unlikely to win but not totally without hope
Can be given little or no chance
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
21 Jockey’s Name & Photo if there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim
WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
COLOUR
Grey (Gr) - light to steel
Bay (B) – from light brown through to dark brown with black mane/tail
Chestnut (Ch) – reddish with a mane/tail to match Roan (Ro) – white hairs mixed with another colour
Brown (Br) – darker than a bay with a black mane/tail
Black (Bl) – black and rare
White (Wh) – rare with pink skin.
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

TIPS TO PICKING A WINNER
1 Pick up a racecard and study the form.
2 Look at the jockeys and owners details and racing colours.
BEHAVIOUR
3 Scan the horse’s course and distance record.
4 Check the jockey’s and trainer’s track record.
A TRIP TO THE PARADE RING
Behaviour in the paddock is a good guide to how the horse is feeling before the race. Good signs are pricked ears, alert eyes, but also a calm and relaxed walk.
1. QUARTERS
A defined line of muscle running down the buttock indicates the horse is fit and well. A lack of muscle definition may indicate that the horse is not yet at its peak.
2. RIB CAGE
A defined line of muscle behind the rib cage indicates that the horse is fit and well. If the horse istoofatthismayindicatethehorsemayneedarun beforeitreachesitsoptimumlevel.
1 3 2
3. COAT
The horse should have a shiny coat, mane and tail. A coat that is not shiny may show that the horse is not yet at its best
EASY BETTING STEPS
1 Go to the bookmaker kiosk and review the odds
3 You will then be given a ticket with details of your bet which you will need to present when collecting any winnings from any bookmaker.
2 State the race number, the number of your chosen horse, the bet type, the amount you want to bet and hand over the cash remembering to only bet what you can afford.
4 Get a good vantage point to watch the action and cheer your horse home!
BET TYPES
The easiest bet types are “To win” which is betting on your chosen horse to win or “Each way” which is betting on your chosen horse to come first, second or third.
Good luck!

CHAMPION TRAINER
The title of All-Weather Champion Trainer will go to the trainer who has achieved the most wins over the course of this season, including today’s races at Newcastle, Lingfield Park and Chelmsford City. A cheque for £10,000 and a trophy will be presented to the winning trainer.
The Rutland trainer, who secured his first title in 2015/16, is on course for his most successful winter campaign in terms of winners, having already surpassed his 2020/21 tally of 59 with a week of the season remaining.
Zealot has been a standout performer for Appleby this winter, racking up seven victories and emerging as a contender for the feature BetUK Easter Classic on Finals Day.

ARC ALL-WEATHER BONUS HORSE OF THE YEAR
The All-Weather Horse of the Year bonus forms part of a wider £1 million initiative to reward owners, trainers, jockeys and racing staff connected with the most consistent performers at ARC’s four all-weather racecourses during the winter season.
Horses are awarded points on the following basis: 1st - 5 points, 2nd - 4 points, 3rd - 3 points, 4th - 2 points and 5th - 1 point.
The Grant Tuer-trained Walking On Clouds, who carries the colours of the Moment of Madness syndicate, has won the £100,000 All-Weather Horse of the Year bonus.
Walking On Clouds finished in the first three in 11 of his 12 appearances, including four victories at Southwell and a sole success at Newcastle, which has earned him 48 points and taken him out of reach of the other contenders.
MARATHON CHAMPIONSHIPS
Berkshire Rocco (Andrew Balding), who was beaten a neck in the 2020 G1 St Leger, relished the return to staying distances as he captured a two-mile conditions race at Southwell in January.
Ebor third Earl Of Tyrone (William Haggas) made a promising debut for his new connections in a two-mile conditions race at Kempton Park in February, quickening smartly to beat Berkshire Rocco by over two lengths.
2022 All-Weather Marathon Champion Earlofthecotswolds (Nigel Twiston-Davies) warmed up for the defence of his title with a tenacious front-running victory in an extended two-mile conditions race at Wolverhampton in March

BERKSHIRE ROCCO is making up for lost time now and had a few of these in behind when runner-up to a smart one at Kempton 8 weeks ago. The likely stiffer test here will suit and he looks the one to beat. Barenboim continues to go from strength to strength for this yard and must be respected despite slight stamina doubts, while last year’s winner Earlofthecotswolds just held off Fleurman at Wolverhampton last month and there shouldn’t be much between the pair again.

CHAMPION APPRENTICE JOCKEY
Billy Loughnane has dominated the All-Weather Champion Apprentice title, finishing well clear of his closest challengers Taylor Fisher and Ryan Sexton.
The 17-year-old notched his first career success at Wolverhampton in November and has not looked back, with his tally
including a remarkable 23 winners in January alone.
Such a spell prompted Loughnane to take a break from the saddle in February to protect his claim for the turf season, during which time he travelled to America to ride track work.
CHAMPION JOCKEY
and Kevin Stott look set to take the All-Weather Champion
Daniel
race to the wire, with Muscutt leading narrowly heading into the closing days of the season.
Stott made a blistering start to the campaign, opening a 15-winner advantage over his rival at one stage, but an impressive flow of winners for Muscutt since the turn of the year enabled him to claw back the deficit.

Royal Ascot victor Missed The Cut (George Boughey) defeated subsequent G1 Dubai World Cup runner-up Algiers in the Listed BetUK Churchill Stakes at Lingfield Park in November, setting a new track record in the process.

2021 All-Weather Sprint champion Summerghand (David O’Meara) landed his third significant prize of 2022 as he charged home to defeat Judicial in the Listed BetUK Golden Rose Stakes at Lingfield Park in November.
Fine Wine (Scott Dixon) continued his progressive profile over five furlongs as he overcame stiff opposition, including G1 performer Art Power, in a conditions race at Newcastle in December.
Annaf (Mick Appleby), fourth in last year’s Three-Year-Old All-Weather Championships, made it a hat-trick of wins this winter in the Listed BetUK Kachy Stakes at Lingfield Park in February.
Loubiesien (Christophe Ferland), who was runner-up in three G3 contests last year, looks set for a big 2023 campaign following his smooth comeback victory in the Prix Anabaa at Chantilly in March.

Race Summary:
ANNAF has thrived on the AW this year, overcoming the run of the race when completing the hat-trick in a listed race at Lingfield 2 months ago, and appeals as the most likely winner. Diligent Harry was a neck behind the selection that day and has since won a C&D handicap so rates the main threat once again, while Vadream can’t be ignored after her impressive win at Doncaster on Saturday.

Veterinary Care

One vet is present at the start of each race and during the race follows the runners in a vehicle. Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys. The second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents. In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.
