WELCOME & MEET THE TEAM
Welcome to Sedgefield Racecourse for 17th October Vickersbet Durham National meeting. Welcome back to Sedgefield. It’s our feature race of the year! The Vickers Independent Family Run Bookmaker Durham National Handicap Chase. Over the bigger obstacles, this 3m 5f chase often provides an epic battle, only the best equine warrior wins this marathon. We have a couple of runners who already know how to win this race returning in 2021. Red Giant for Jennie Candlish under Sean Quinlan won in 2020, earning forgiveness after looking like the winner in 2018 but taking the wrong route. Brian Boranha was the winner that day in 2018 and he returns again, its his 4th pop at the race, he doesn’t have a bad record with a win, 3rd place and 4th place. We do have an Irish raider, Shark Hanlon sends Hewick. It will be some achievement if he takes the spoils with top weight. As well as the big race we have an exciting afternoon of racing ahead. Donald McCain, Brian Ellison and Micky Hammond, all big supporters of Sedgefield have runners. Peter Bowen makes the journey north to us, he has a huge success rate at this track so his runners are always worth considering. I would like to thank our sponsors this afternoon, thank you for returning to support us in what has been a crazy time for all. Our next race meeting is on Nov 4th. Gates open 10:30am, 1st race 12:37pm. As always, I wish you all the very best in picking a few winners and I look forward to welcoming you back to Sedgefield Racecourse again soon. Enjoy and good luck. Emma White GENERAL MANAGER

Star Ratings Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
Runswick Days won The Santander In Memory of Robert Forster Handicap Steeple Chase at Sedgefield on Tuesday 11th November 2014.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

RACE SUMMARY
These is likely to be fought out by the Donald McCain-trained pair of MINELLA DRAMA and Minella Trump. The latter is in terrific form and should put up a bold bid for the five-timer, but the first-named looked a classy sort over hurdles and, as an ex-pointer, promises to do better still in this sphere, so he’s marginally preferred. Baron de Midleton is most appealing of the remainder. 1-2-3: 1.MINELLA DRAMA (IRE) 2.MINELLA TRUMP (IRE) 3.BARON DE MIDLETON (IRE) KEY colours

The stable runs CLASSIC ESCAPE today. LONGEST TRAVELLER: HEWICK trained by J J Hanlon, Ireland. RACE SUMMARY
Irish-raider HEWICK arrives in tip-top form and may have even more to offer over this longer trip on what is only his fifth chase start. Classic Escape has not been seen since a crashing fall in the Edinburgh National at Musselburgh in February but his profile for this yard is generally a progressive one so rates the main threat ahead of the in-form Montanna. 1-2-3: 1.HEWICK (IRE) 2.CLASSIC ESCAPE (IRE) 3.MONTANNA KEY colours

The safety of horse and rider is of paramount importance to Sedgefield Racecourse. We have a team of highly qualified vets and doctors following the action at all times and a top of the range horse ambulance in attendance at every meeting. It is policy at this racecourse for screens to be erected when a horse requires veterinary treatment on the track. This is to offer some privacy and calm for both horse and vet and does not automatically imply that a fatality has occurred.
