Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race

HHHHI Good chance of being placed

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

Runswick Days won The Santander In Memory of Robert Forster Handicap Steeple Chase at Sedgefield on Tuesday 11th November 2014.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

TRACK

UPDATE

I am pleased to confirm that the track at Sedgefield Racecourse will benefit from significant investment over the summer As a result, we have taken the decision to move our popular Ladies Day event from its traditional August date to the fixture scheduled here for Friday 14 April.

The project will primarily focus on the area between the back and home straights, going into and out of the final bend. The major groundwork is anticipated to take between six and eight weeks to complete, with further time then required to fully re-establish the racing surface.

Specifically, this project will look to address issues with the historical topography of the final bend, making improvements to the entry radius as well as the overall camber. On completion, this specific area of the racing surface will also benefit from an improved radius, offering a more optimal transition from the back straight to the home straight.

We will look forward to giving you further updates over the course of the summer as we progress through the work. If you have any questions, please do get in touch.

PLAY SMARTER

MARINE NATIONALE made it 4 from 4 with more to spare than the winning margin implies in the Royal Bond having conceded first run and, although that form is perhaps not quite as strong as some of the other principals, he has the hallmarks of a potential star and is taken to confirm that view Facile Vega surrendered his unbeaten record in tame fashion last time but will be a big threat if proving that running all wrong. Diverge is interesting up in grade, with Il Etait Temps also respected.

PLAY SMARTER

EL FABIOLO and Jonbon (won) were separated by only a neck in a Grade 1 novice hurdle at Aintree last spring. The former’s comfortable defeat of Banbridge at Leopardstown last month is narrowly the best piece of 2m novice chase form this season so he’s taken to edge out Nicky Henderson’s charge this time. Saint Roi gets the vote for third.

MOORE CLOUDS took a heavy fall at Catterick 6 weeks ago but her previous second at Musselburgh is solid form so she is worth another chance off the same mark. Moonlight Glory looked better than ever when scoring over hurdles at Newcastle and rates a big threat off her lower chase mark, while Fearless Action made a decent start to his chase career when second over C&D and is entitled to come on for that.

PLAY SMARTER

One of the few races Britain has dominated and the thriving INTO OVERDRIVE looks the pick of the home team. He continued his remarkable progress when immediately resuming winning ways in the Rowland Meyrick at Wetherby on Boxing Day and his assured jumping/battling qualities are big attributes for a race of this nature. Corach Rambler was a most impressive winner of this last year and has presumably been kept fresh with this event in mind, with Happygolucky also high on the shortlist

LEADING COURSE TRAINER (17-22): M Hammond (32 wins from 284 runners, 11%) runs BUTO TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): A M Thomson (2 wins from 6 runners, 33%) runs FAITHFULFLYER LONGEST TRAVELLER: BELLA BLUESKY trained by Ewan Whillans, Hawick, 138 miles.

IfTELHIMLISTEN takes his chance the others will likely be competing for minor honours Indeed, Jennie Candlish’s charge followed up his Southwell breakthrough success with equal ease at Warwick on Sunday and, with just the one penalty to carry, he is clearly a big step ahead of the handicapper. Bella Bluesky shaped well on her belated reappearance and is taken to edge out Faithfulflyer in the race for second-place money

MARIE’S ROCK showed her trademark turn of foot when landing this contest 12 months ago and Nicky Henderson’s improving mare can utilise it again to telling effect to fend off former Champion Hurdle winners Honeysuckle and Epatante. Henry de Bromhead’s outstanding mare is greatly feared now stepping back up in trip though, while Echoes In Rain is another who could enter calculations in a superb renewal.

Willie Mullins was narrowly denied a first win in this contest 12 months ago and can gain compensation now courtesy of TEKAO whose strong-travelling style should be seen to very good effect in this race. Perseus Way looks nicely handicapped on his Grade 2 second at Kempton last month and heads the many dangers along with Charles Byrnes’s Byker, French-recruit Bad and Sundial, who represents last year’s winning connections.

PLAY SMARTER

GAILLARD DU MESNIL quickly made up into a very smart chaser last term, third in Grade 1 company at this meeting prior to filling the same spot in the Irish Grand National in April. Deservedly off the mark in this sphere at Leopardstown over Christmas, he lost little caste in defeat behind Mighty Potter last time and he’s very much the one to beat stepping back up in trip. Chemical Energy is an intriguing runner for Gordon Elliott and is feared, along with Mahler Mission and Minella Crooner

LEADING COURSE TRAINER (17-22): D McCain (54 wins from 264 runners, 20%) runs ON CLOUD NINE & QUEEN OF HINDSIGHT TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): D McCain (5 wins from 32 runners, 16%) runs ON CLOUD NINE & QUEEN OF HINDSIGHT LONGEST TRAVELLER: NORTHERN REEL trained by M Harris, Warminster, 292 miles.

Donald McCain has a very healthy 26% strike-rate in bumpers here so his Irish point recruit ON CLOUD NINE is the suggestion, with confidence increased should the betting speak in her favour. Northern Reel is another from an Irish point background from a stable which does well in bumpers so she’s feared most ahead of last month’s Ayr third Touch of A Dragon.
