UPDATE
I am pleased to confirm that the track at Sedgefield Racecourse will benefit from significant investment over the summer As a result, we have taken the decision to move our popular Ladies Day event from its traditional August date to the fixture scheduled here for Friday 14 April.
The project will primarily focus on the area between the back and home straights, going into and out of the final bend. The major groundwork is anticipated to take between six and eight weeks to complete, with further time then required to fully re-establish the racing surface.
Specifically, this project will look to address issues with the historical topography of the final bend, making improvements to the entry radius as well as the overall camber. On completion, this specific area of the racing surface will also benefit from an improved radius, offering a more optimal transition from the back straight to the home straight.
We will look forward to giving you further updates over the course of the summer as we progress through the work. If you have any questions, please do get in touch.
Colin Smith General Manager, Sedgefield Racecourse.

Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
Runswick Days won The Santander In Memory of Robert Forster Handicap Steeple Chase at Sedgefield on Tuesday 11th November 2014.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

GERRI COLOMBE only just failed to reel in the winner when losing his unbeaten record in the Brown Advisory at the Cheltenham Festival and he’s taken to gain compensation here and record a third Grade 1 success over fences. Bronn was over 4 lengths behind Gerri Colombe that day but the way he travelled suggests it’s entirely possible he can finish closer to the selection at this sharper track.

This is ultra competitive. CAMPROND shaped very well in the Coral Cup and could be the answer No Ordinary Joe and Buddy One are also much respected on the back of excellent placed efforts at the Cheltenham Festival. Harry Derham is starting to make a name for himself in the training ranks and his hat-trick seeking Dargiannini is also on the shortlist along with Imperial Cup third Playful Saint, who could prove suited by this longer trip.

LEADING COURSE TRAINER (17-22): M Hammond (31 wins from 281 runners, 11%) runs MAC SUIBHNE & MISTER BELLS
TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): B Haslam (4 wins from 12 runners, 33%) runs MARSHALLED
WEIGHTWATCHER: ROAD WARRIOR won off a handicap mark of 117, his rating is now down 6lb to 111.
LONGEST TRAVELLER: FULGURIX trained by Dr R Newland, Droitwich, 198 miles.
ROAD WARRIOR capitalised on his lowest mark for 2 years at Newcastle last month and remains potentially well treated up 7lb, so he is taken to follow up with his yard still in good form. Cilluirid has an excellent record here and reappears on a winning mark, so may emerge as the biggest threat ahead of Fulgurix.

PLAY SMARTER
HULLNBACK was a fine second in a Grade 2 bumper at this meeting 12 months ago and made it 2 from 3 over hurdles when scoring in a good time at Warwick in February, so he’s the tentative selection in a very interesting renewal of this Grade 1. Inthepocket unquestionably sets the standard on his excellent fourth in the Supreme, but there’s still a strong suspicion he’ll be seen in a better light when returning to further The unbeaten Altobelli, Found A Fifty and Luccia complete the shortlist

PLAY SMARTER
Aintree seems to bring out the best in FAKIR D’OUDAIRIES and Joseph O’Brien’s 8-y-o can win this for the third successive season. Pic d’Orhy’s winning run came to an end when second in the Ascot Chase in February but he finished 7 lengths in front of the selection that day so rates a huge threat Hitman was an excellent third in the Ryanair at Cheltenham last month and should be in the mix again having finished second in this last term.

PLAY SMARTER
HAUT EN COULEURS produced another highly likeable display when fifth in the Plate and, as an assured jumper, he strikes as the sort to take to these fences, so he makes the most appeal. Al Dancer and Ashtown Lad have both won here already this term and appear to have been laid out for a big run, so they head the numerous dangers in another fascinating renewal.

PLAY SMARTER
GREY DAWNING is going the right way and showed bundles of stamina when winning a Grade 2 at Warwick in January. His shrewd handler will no doubt have targeted this event and he is taken to land the spoils. Absolute Notions will also appreciate this stiffer test of stamina and looks sure to make his presence felt, whilst sole mare Apple Away will be dangerous if let loose on the lead. Cheltenham Festival winners Stay Away Fay and Iroko also enter calculations in what looks a cracking contest

Probable S.P’s: 9-1 Go Dante (GB), 11-1 Parramount (GB), 12-1 Gaoth Chuil (IRE), 14-1 JPR One (IRE), Knickerbockerglory (IRE), Soul Icon (GB), Densworth (IRE), 16-1 Blueking d’Oroux (FR), 18-1 Glan (IRE), Nibiru (IRE), 22-1 Ukantango (IRE), Call of The Wild (IRE), Washington (GB), 25-1 Advanced Virgo (IRE), 28-1 Homme Public (FR), Punctuation (GB), Fruit N Nut (IRE), Collingham (GER), 33-1 Geromino (FR), 40-1 Albert’s Back (GB), 50-1 A Different Kind (IRE), 80-1 Tullypole Annie (IRE)
PARRAMOUNT continued his upward trajectory over hurdles with another dominant display at Fakenham 4 weeks ago and, with his in-form rider’s claim off-setting a fair chunk of his subsequent 10lb rise, he looks sure to make another bold bid. This is ultra-competitive however with the prolific Soul Icon a big threat returned from a short break. Go Dante, Gaoth Chuil and Blueking d’Oroux are a trio of others fancied to be in the mix also.

LEADING COURSE TRAINER (17-22): D McCain (55 wins from 262 runners, 21%) runs KILLANE & LOVIN JUKEBOX TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): S J Smith (2 wins from 13 runners, 15%) runs EDGAR ALLAN POE LONGEST TRAVELLER: TONYX trained by A Murphy, Newmarket, 217 miles.
It might be worth taking a chance on KILLANE, who is well treated, particularly when William Maggs’s 10lb claim is taken into account, if first-time blinkers have a positive effect. Lovin Jukebox, a stablemate of the selection, and Edgar Allan Poe were second/third in the same C&D contest last time and may provide the main opposition.
