Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
Runswick Days won The Santander In Memory of Robert Forster Handicap Steeple Chase at Sedgefield on Tuesday 11th November 2014.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

PLAY SMARTER
SLADE STEEL may have lost his unbeaten record over hurdles at Leopardstown last month, but he bumped into a potentially exceptional novice in Ballyburn (short-priced favourite for the Gallagher) and is fancied to give that form a major boost by taking the curtain raiser. Tullyhill booked his spot for this with a dominant display at Punchestown and, with the timefigure supporting the performance, he requires the utmost respect, while his stablemates Mystical Power and Mistergif add further spice.

PLAY SMARTER
Although HUNTERS YARN lacks chase experience he was impressive when coasting home in a Fairyhouse maiden last time and the same trainer’s Duc des Genievres took this in 2019 having won only a maiden before. The selection’s stablemates Gaelic Warrior, who can’t have been right last time, and Il Etait Temps have more established credentials having already tasted Grade 1 success over fences and head the dangers along with Found A Fifty

RACE SUMMARY
There may well be more to come from EVERYONESACRITIC, who made a winning handicap debut at Musselburgh and this 5lb higher mark should be within his reach. Boot ‘N’ Shoe is of interest now switched to handicap company and he is next on the list ahead of potential improver Endofconversation. Celestial Fashion has solid form claims judged on her second-placed finishes here the last twice but this step back up in trip poses a serious question.

RACE SUMMARY
In the hope that the first-time cheekpieces help give him a lift, GAMBIE TIEP earns the vote in this open-looking contest Presumably the lack of match-fitness was a significant contributor to his heavy defeat at Ffos Las last month and he doesn’t look badly treated off a mark just 2lb above that off which he scored at Bangor three starts back. Blue Bear was behind Six One Nine at Newcastle but improved when scoring over this C&D subsequently and he is second choice.Templier also has claims

PLAY SMARTERSTATE MAN’s only defeat over hurdles in the last 2 years came at the hands of Constitution Hill in this race last season and in the absence of that outstanding rival he’s fully expected to make it 11 career wins. Irish Point’s Grade 1 success at Leopardstown over Christmas came at just short of 3m but he was speedy enough to win a Grade 3 over just in excess of 2m on his reappearance and can give the selection most to do ahead of Kingwell-winner Nemean Lion.

HORSE AND JOCKEY WELFARE AT SEDGEFIELD RACECOURSE
Nothing matters more to us when racing than the safety and welfare of both horse and rider Central to that is the track itself and our groundstaff do everything in their power to provide an optimum racing surface. On duty today we also have a dedicated and experienced team of highly-qualified Vets, Doctors and Paramedics following the action at every stage Their key responsibility is to monitor and provide care to the competitors throughout their time at the racecourse The locations and vehicle movements of these skilled specialists during racing are designed to provide a rapid response to any incident across the site. We also have a highspecification horse ambulance in attendance at every fixture to enable safe transport of a horse from the track to our on-site veterinary treatment facility for further treatment, or to the nearest equine referral hospital
It is our standard practice to erect screens around any horse or jockey requiring attention on the course as this provides privacy and a safe, calm environment in which to accurately diagnose and treat the patient as necessary. Another typically competitive renewal with LARK IN THE MORNIN receiving the tentative vote. He’s yet to build on his hurdling debut promise but caught the eye finishing with running left after a bad mistake at Punchestown on his most recent outing and is potentially on a good mark on his Flat form representing the yard that took this race in 2019. Milan Tino has been given a chance by the assessor judged on his useful French form, with Liari and Latin Verse just two others to note.

It’s interesting that Adrian Keatley has engaged the services of Brian Hughes for GALE MAHLER and she might be worth chancing on debut, with confidence increased should the betting vibes be strong. Positivia is another interesting newcomer, while Carlisle runner-up Holly Bird may prove pick of those with experience.
