WELCOME
Welcome to the Boulton Group Midlands Grand National raceday and a particularly huge welcome to our sponsors, The Boulton Group. The Boulton Group is a multifaceted group based in Cheshire that provide specialist services that meet client needs, from marketing, payroll and hospitality to luxury experiences. This year starts a five-year sponsorship deal with The Boulton Group and I would like to thank Carl Boulton and his team for their support. I know that Carl is a huge fan of the course and I hope him and his team have a most enjoyable day with us. This year’s big race looks a competitive renewal, with Bryony Frost riding ‘Yala Enki’ heading the weights who comes here in great form after winning both the Portman Cup at Taunton and the Grade 3 Jewson handicap chase at Cheltenham in November. Paul Nicholls also runs the 2020 winner ‘Truckers Lodge’ and last year’s winner ‘Time to Get Up’ reappears for Jonjo O’Neill. We also see 4 runners travelling from Ireland to compete for the most valuable handicap prize money of the week of £150,000. We are also delighted to welcome back the public to our biggest meeting of the year. Last year’s fixture was held behind closed doors and the raceday just isn’t the same without the roar of the crowd. Head over to the Rugby Marquee in the Center Course before racing where we will have live music from Irish band Radio Murphy. You can also enjoy the screening of the scheduled Six Nations matches on a giant screen within the marquee. I do hope you enjoy your day but can I ask that you are respectful to your fellow racegoers and our magnificent staff that have worked tirelessly over the past few weeks to ensure that we all have an enjoyable day. Good Luck! Brian Barrass General Manager

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: ‘‘‘‘‘ Selected to win the race. ‘‘‘‘• Good chance of being placed. ‘‘‘•• By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. ‘‘••• Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. ‘•••• Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

RACE SUMMARY
SAINT PALAIS ran in the Towton Novices’ Chase when last seen and can resume his progress back in a handicap. The 5-y-o may not have been himself at Wetherby but was the main market rival to Ahoy Senor that day following the impressive start he had made to his chasing career. He can see off the challenge of Docpickedme and Fuji Flight, who both arrive in fine form having won their last 2 starts.

The return to a shorter trip is a slight concern for BEAUPORT but his form is rock solid and he deserves to win a nice prize like this. David Pipe has a good record in this race in recent years so Panic Attack could be the one to give the selection most to think about ahead of Jepeck.

THE DAY OF ALL DAYS SINCE 1969 The race of all races the Boulton Group Midlands Grand National is back for another year and our showpiece event promises to be yet another moment to remember.
With a total pot of £287,950 on offer
across the race card – an impressive £150,000 of which will be up for grabs in the feature race alone.
The race is run over four miles and two furlongs, making it the second longest race in the National Hunt calendar after the Aintree Grand National. In 1969, winner Happy Spring was coming to the end of a fine career of which had seen him be one of only six horses ever to have beaten the legendary Arkle. Happy Spring and jockey Ken White galloped into the record books by becoming the first ever winner of the Midlands Grand National. In the decades since, the winner’s circle has never welcomed the same horse twice with 49 different winners taking first prize. And there have been some distinguished victors along the way. In 1975, Rag Trade, under the guidance of
John Burke won the event and a year later put off Red Rum’s third victory in the Grand National by winning at Aintree.
In 1986 The Thinker stormed to victory and just over 12 months on joined racing’s elite by winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Just over a decade later in 1997, Seven Towers dashed hopes of racegoers celebrating a local victory as he defeated Lord Gyllene.
The second-placed horse was owned by
Staffordshire businessman and self-made millionaire Sir Stanley Clarke and his wife Lady Hilda. Whilst the boss of St. Modwen Properties narrowly failed to taste victory at his local course of Uttoxeter in the Midlands Grand National, his New Zealand bred gelding gave Sir Stanley his racing high point by winning the Aintree Grand National three weeks later.
The victory of Lord Gyllene at Aintree
is remembered as much for the circumstances surrounding the bomb threats and re-staging of the Grand National on the following Monday, as for his win itself.
Then in 2010, racing royalty in the
shape of legendary jockey AP McCoy and trainer Jonjo O’Neill enjoyed success with Synchronised. Once again, the horse showed success in the Midlands Grand National is a stamp of class as it went on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup two years later.
Between 2011 and 2014, trainer David
Pipe, broke records winning the race four years in a row with Minella Four Star, Master Overseer, Big Occasion and Goulanes. Whilst in 2016 Fergal O’Brien’s much-loved Chase The Spud stormed to success in the final furlong.

RACE SUMMARY
TIME TO GET UP has been seen just twice since his smooth success in a red-hot renewal of this last year but caught the eye in a huge way at Haydock 4 weeks ago with a repeat bid in mind. Dropped 2lb and fitted with cheekpieces, he looks bound to put up a big run. 2020-winner Truckers Lodge seems sure to go well again, while De Young Warrior brings bags of potential to the table and is respected.

RACE SUMMARY
This looks a good opportunity for GAOT to open her account over hurdles following 3 placed efforts this season. The 6-y-o shaped well when third on her last 2 starts and, having been dropped 1lb since her Plumpton run last month, she looks capable of winning off her current mark. C&D winner Branson Missouri is feared most, ahead of the unexposed Simply Red who is also engaged to run on Friday.

RACE SUMMARY
There’s a chance that LOCH GARMAN ARIS was still in need of the run when a distant second at Chepstow last time, which was his first completion of the current campaign, and he could be the answer to an open and tricky-looking contest. With Twotwothree due to run at Doncaster on Friday, Mille Sussurri and The Dubai Way are nominated as the main dangers, though Coupdebol also warrants respect.
