WELCOME

Welcome to our Staffordshire Plate Raceday featuring the jump season opener and a particular warm welcome goes to our sponsors today, Marston’s. We would like to express our gratitude of their continued support of us here at Uttoxeter Racecourse.

Our feature race today is the “61 Deep Pale Ale Staffordshire Plate Handicap Chase” which is a Class 2 race with an impressive £35,000 up for grabs. The dry weather has made the preparation for this raceday particularly challenging for the groundstaff. They have worked tirelessly for the past ten days, watering the track to ensure the ground conditions are as good as possible for racing. Alongside the racing, we also have some great entertainment on offer. Enjoy listening to a live performance before and during racing by the talented solo singer – Dan James McClew. Plus, head down to the Grandstand to take on former World number 1 and darts legend, John ‘Old Stoneface’ Lowe (MBE). John will be joining us to take on punters for our 9 Dart Challenge. Lowe is one of only six players to have won the World Championship three times, having done so in 1979, 1987 and 1993. He is the first player to have won the World Championship in three separate decades. Lowe’s titles and achievements span a career of almost forty years, but he is also well known for being the first player to achieve a televised nine dart finish. We’d also like to congratulate Edward and Julia Froggatt on celebrating their Diamond Wedding Anniversary. Married on 1st May 1962, Julia & Edward have been annual boxholders at Uttoxeter for over 30 years. We hope you have a wonderful day! We are only 2 weeks away from next meeting featuring “The Human League” live after racing, on the 14th May. We have very few tickets left so please get yours now to avoid disappointment. Have a great day and good luck! Brian Barrass General Manager UTTOXETER RACECOURSE is part of Arena Racing Company which includes; Bath, Brighton, Chepstow, Doncaster, Ffos Las, Fontwell Park, Great Yarmouth, Hereford, Lingfield Park, Newcastle, Royal Windsor, Sedgefield, Southwell, Wolverhampton and Worcester racecourses; and Newcastle and Sunderland Greyhound Stadiums.

RACE SUMMARY

FRANCKY DU BERLAIS thrived around this time last season and he’s of interest again now off a potentially handy mark after his encouraging fourth in the Topham at Aintree 3 weeks ago. Captain Tommy won this last year off 2lb higher and arrives here on the back of a couple of decent placed efforts, while Romain de Senam isn’t taken lightly back at a more suitable trip and racing off his last winning mark.

RACE SUMMARY Timeform’s three leading juveniles of last year line up in the first Classic of 2022 and it’s hard to look beyond NATIVE TRAIL after his pleasing return in the Craven. That took his unbeaten run to 5 and he looks set to improve again, with a well-run Guineas sure to suit him. SIXTH RACE 4.39 TWO MILES ABOUT SIX AND A HALF FURLONGS (2M 6F 108YDS) FOR NOVICE FIVE YRS OLD AND UPWARDS

THE 1834 NOVICES’ HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE (CLASS 4) (GBB RACE) Total race value £10600 x Owners Prize Money. 1st £3839, 2nd £1920, 3rd £960, 4th £480. (Penalty Value £5010.32) Weights lowered 7lbs.

RACE STATS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (17-22): Dr R Newland (29 wins from 112 runners, 26%) runs SHETLAND BUS TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): P Nicholls (12 wins from 23 runners, 52%) runs BREWERS PROJECT LONGEST TRAVELLER: BREWERS PROJECT trained by P Nicholls, Ditcheat, 149 miles.

RACE SUMMARY This race could be teed up nicely for SHETLAND BUS, with his three rivals likely to take each other on for the early lead. The 9-y-o shaped as though coming to hand on his second start for the shrewd Dr Richard Newland yard at Bangor and he is marginally preferred ahead of the consistent Clemencia. If the blinkers do the trick, Brewers Project should make his presence felt, too, but Found On looks vulnerable, despite winning by a wide margin at Market Rasen last month. 1-2-3: 1.SHETLAND BUS (GER) 2.CLEMENCIA (IRE) 3.BREWERS PROJECT (IRE)
