STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
ëëëëë Selected to win the race
ëëëëê Good chance of being placed
ëëëêê By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
ëëêêê Unlikely to win but not totally without hope
ëêêêê Can be given little or no chance
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances) The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

PARK HILL DANCER may have lost his unbeaten record on his hurdling debut last time, but he was beaten only by a bright prospect (the winner has scored again since) so he can go one better this time around. Hauraki Gulf ran well on his reappearance and can be the one to give the selection most to think about, ahead of Harjo.

RACE SUMMARY
Off the mark over fences at Southwell in November, MARTA DES MOTTES has shown enough in defeat subsequently to think she won’t be long in going in again in this sphere and she shades the vote, ahead of another improving, in-form sort in the shape of Greenrock Abbey. Tarahumara, who made a bright start in 2 hurdle outings last term, is also worth a close look now sent chasing.

RACE SUMMARY
BARRIER PEAKS is thoroughly progressive and shouldn’t have too much trouble in bringing up the 4-timer here. Puddlesinthepark appeals as the type to do better now handicapping and can chase the selection home, whilst Maillot Blanc should also be in the mix if quickly bouncing back from a disappointing effort last time.
