STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
ëëëëë Selected to win the race
ëëëëê Good chance of being placed
ëëëêê By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
ëëêêê Unlikely to win but not totally without hope
ëêêêê Can be given little or no chance
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances) The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

The excellent record of the Christian Williams yard in valuable handicap chases swings the vote the way of CAP DU NORD. The very progressive Kinondo Kwetu is feared most despite clear top weight. Twig, who won over hurdles here off an identical mark on his latest start, last year’s runner-up Ruthless Article and The Abbey also make the shortlist in one of the highlights of the summer jumps season.

RACE SUMMARY
Making her seasonal/stable debut, SACRE COEUR shaped encouragingly when runner-up at Market Rasen and she can build on that effort to return to winning ways back up in trip. Merry Poppins continues in good heart and can go well again with the return to this longer distance to suit, while Jungle Prose is also respected for Gordon Elliott.

RACE SUMMARY
A few in with a shout but BOMBYX stepped up markedly on his belated comeback when fifth at Ludlow in May and, upped to 2 1/2m for the first time, Lucy Wadham’s 8-y-o is fancied to double his tally over obstacles. Faded Fantasy rates as a big danger on handicap debut having bolted up at Southwell last month, while there were more encouraging signs from Watergrange Jack in headgear last time, so he’s another who could have a say in proceedings.
