Official raceday programme | £3.50
WELCOME
Welcome back to Uttoxeter Racecourse for our Winter Ladies Day and a very warm welcome to our sponsors today - Brit Direct, John Pye Auctions, EBF & QuinnBet.
The Racecourse and its staff are happy to welcome you back for the first time this year after a difficult end to 2023 with the disappointment of losing our sell out New Years Eve fixture, let’s hope that we have more luck with the weather this year! I would like to thank all our customers for their support and understanding throughout the year. Ladies, look out for our flower wall to take your picture and showcase your outfits. We have a best dressed competition with some fabulous prizes up for grabs. Our team will be out searching for their favourite outfits to select our finalists. After racing, head down to the Premier bar for a 60-minute live music set from Paul Skerritt, an excellent Swing Jazz Singer. All racegoers are welcome to this! Looking ahead, we are less than 50 days away from our Premier Raceday, The Midlands Grand National, on Saturday 16th March. We hope you will join us for what is sure to be a great day of racing and entertainment. The tickets are in high demand. Book before Wednesday the 31st of January for our early bird price. The MGN always caps off the best week in racing, following on from the Cheltenham Festival, and on Sunday the 12th March we will be hosting a Cheltenham Festival and MGN preview in conjunction with BresBet. There is a fantastic panel in attendance consisting of Paddy Brennan, Fergal O’Brien, Liam Harrison, Johnny Dineen and will be hosted by Robert Cooper. Tickets are only £17.50 and include a pie and pea meal. Visit the website or pop into the office to book. Over the last 3 weeks, I have been busy organising our themed music racedays. Keep an eye out on our socials for some exciting announcements over the next couple of weeks. Our first live music event will be the Abba Party Raceday featuring the Staffordshire Plate on Saturday May 4th. Our next fixture, Super Saturday, is in a fortnight on the February 10th. We hope to see you here again. I hope you have a great day today and good luck! STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: ‘‘‘‘‘ Selected to win the race. ‘‘‘‘• Good chance of being placed. ‘‘‘•• By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. ‘‘••• Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. ‘•••• Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

RACE SUMMARY
A tricky opener to solve but the vote goes to COPPER COVE, who seemed a bit fresher than ideal on his seasonal return at Carlisle in October but the suspicion remains that there’s more to come from Jonjo O’Neill’s 7-y-o at some stage. Foxey was a commanding winner over the larger obstacles last time, so he may emerge as the main danger back hurdling, with Classic Maestro and Heure de Gloire another couple fancied to go well.

NO BUT I WILL needs to shrug off a lesser display at Aintree over Christmas but he’d previously looked one to keep onside when scoring in determined style on chase debut at Wetherby and he’s worth another chance to get back on the up.
