SATURDAY16 MARCH
official raceday programme | £3.50
Welcome to the bet365 Midlands Grand National and a particularly warm welcome to our sponsors for the day. Uttoxeter Racecourse are extremely pleased that our neighbors at bet365 are sponsoring our biggest raceday of the year
We have a record £375,000 of prizemoney up for grabs today across our 7-race card with the big race offering a £150,000 purse. The total prizemoney fund today has risen an impressive £90,000 making this the richest raceday in Uttoxeter’s history.
This year’s big race looks a competitive affair with Mr Incredible toping the ratings at 150 for Willie Mullins Previous winner Truckers Lodge aims to be the first horse to ever win the race twice on its 5th entry to the race Autonomous Cloud and Guetapan Collonges are both recent course winners and Young Dev aims to go one better after being the runner up in 2022.
We have some great entertainment planned for our racegoers today. ‘Back Chat Brass’ will be roaming the crowds prior to racing, and you can head over to the Rugby Marquee in the Center Course where we will have live music from local band, ‘Radio Murphy’. You can also enjoy the screening of the scheduled Six Nations matches, on a giant screen within the marquee. Don’t rush home after racing as we will be screening the Ireland v Scotland Six Nations match in the Premier bar where all customers are allowed access after the last race
Bob Champion will be walking around site doing a meet and greet to help raise funds for our fantastic charity partner, Burton Albion Community Trust. Bob won the 1981 Grand National whilst riding Adalanti to victory with the pair of them winning the team of the year sports personality award later that year for their success.
The ticket sales for today’s fixture have been excellent and I would like to thank you all for attending and helping make this day so special for everyone in Uttoxeter. I do hope you enjoy your day, but can I ask that you are respectful to your fellow racegoers and our magnificent staff that have worked tirelessly over the past few weeks to ensure that we all have a fun, safe and enjoyable day.
Good Luck!

Horse & Jockey Welfare at Uttoxeter
Nothing matters more to us when racing than the safety and welfare of both horse and rider. Central to that is the track itself and our groundstaff do everything in their power to provide an optimum racing surface. On duty today we also have a dedicated and experienced team of highly-qualified Vets, Doctors and Paramedics following the action at every stage. Their key responsibility is to monitor and provide care to the competitors throughout their time at the racecourse The locations and vehicle movements of these skilled specialists during racing are designed to provide a rapid response to any incident across the site We also have a high-specification horse ambulance in attendance at every fixture to enable safe transport of a horse from the track to our on-site veterinary treatment facility for further treatment, or to the nearest equine referral hospital
It is our standard practice to erect screens around any horse or jockey requiring attention on the course as this provides privacy and a safe, calm environment in which to accurately diagnose and treat the patient as necessary. Please do not assume the worst if screens are erected around a horse We are fully committed to minimizing risk in our sport, to dealing professionally and efficiently with any injury, and to maintaining the highest possible quality of care for the horses and jockeys racing here today. To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy, please visit our website www.uttoxeter-racecourse.co.uk

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: ëëëëë Selected to win the race ëëëëê Good chance of being placed ëëëêê By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. ëëêêê Unlikely to win but not totally without hope ëêêêê Can be given little or no chance
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances) The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

RACE SUMMARY
GWENNIE MAY BOY comfortably saw off an improving stablemate with the pair a long way clear at Bangor 17 days ago, so there’s a good chance he can defy a small rise to collect another big handicap pot for his shrewd yard. Lord Snootie is a big threat on the back of a staying-on second at Haydock and the progressive Saint Davy demands plenty of respect.

The race of all races the bet365 Midlands Grand National is back for another year and our showpiece event promises to be yet another moment to remember.
We have a record £375,000 of prizemoney up for grabs today across our 7 racecard with the big races offering a £150,000 purse. The total prizemoney fund today has risen an impressive £90,000 making this the richest raceday in Uttoxeter’s history.
The race is run over four miles and two furlongs, making it the second longest race in the National Hunt calendar after the Aintree Grand National.
In 1969, winner Happy Spring was coming to the end of a fine career of which had seen him be one of only six horses ever to have beaten the legendary Arkle. Happy Spring and jockey Ken White galloped into the record books by becoming the first ever winner of the Midlands Grand National.
In the decades since, the winner’s circle has never welcomed the same horse twice with 49 different winners taking first prize. And there have been some distinguished victors along the way.
In 1975, Rag Trade, under the guidance of John Burke won the event and a year later put off Red Rum’s third victory in the Grand National by winning at Aintree.
In 1986 The Thinker stormed to victory and just over 12 months on joined racing’s elite by winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Just over a decade later in 1997, Seven Towers dashed hopes of racegoers celebrating a local victory as he defeated Lord Gyllene.
The second-placed horse was owned by Staffordshire businessman and self-made millionaire Sir Stanley Clarke and his wife Lady Hilda. Whilst the boss of St Modwen Properties narrowly failed to taste victory at his local course of Uttoxeter in the Midlands Grand National, his New Zealand bred gelding gave Sir Stanley his racing high point by winning the Aintree Grand National three weeks later.
The victory of Lord Gyllene at Aintree is remembered as much for the circumstances surrounding the bomb threats and re-staging of the Grand National on the following Monday, as for his win itself
Then in 2010, racing royalty in the shape of legendary jockey AP McCoy and trainer Jonjo O’Neill enjoyed success with Synchronised. Once again, the horse showed success in the Midlands Grand National is a stamp of class as it went on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup two years later.
This year’s big race looks a competitive affair with Mr Incredible toping the ratings at 150 for Willie Mullins. Previous winner Truckers Lodge aims to be the first horse to ever win the race twice on its 5th entry to the race

RACE SUMMARY
Traditionally one of the most gruelling races of the season, which will suit IRON BRIDGE, who got tapped for toe at a crucial stage when third in the Grand National Trial at Haydock last month. He can provide his yard with a third win in this race at the main expense of the likeable My Silver Lining, who was 6 lengths ahead of the selection that day but is now 4lb worse off. RACE SUMMARY
The prolific BOLSOVER BILL is a really likeable sort for one at this level and can maintain his unbeaten start for the Harry Derham yard. Point winner Hymac is still very lightly raced for his age and isn’t ruled out of stepping forward again on his third chase outing, albeit he’s perhaps better suited to 3m, whilst Jupiter du Gite made a sound start over fences last time and wouldn’t be out of things if his headstrong ways don’t prove too much of an issue.

RACE SUMMARY
A small field but it’s an interesting bumper. CAPTAIN BELLAMY would appear to be held in high regard by the Paul Nicholls yard so is given another chance 12 weeks on from flopping in an Ascot listed race. Fellow bumper winner Lieutenant Mayne looks capable of better and is second choice ahead of Exeter runner-up Peacenik.
