WELCOME

Dear All,

The 2023 season began in welcome spring sunshine at Royal Windsor last Monday with a bumper eight-race programme. Sly Madam looked a progressive filly for Sheena West and William Carver in the mile handicap, while the winner of the feature race, Coco Bear, was one of several sprinters in that race who are likely to revisit the racecourse in the coming months

This afternoon’s top races are the Sky Sports Racing HD Virgin 535 Handicap, a five furlong sprint, and the Marquee Handicap over one circuit of the figure-of-eight track, which equates to nearly a mile and half While the respective distances represent the two extremes at Windsor, we are expecting a typically exciting finish in both cases.

Next Monday, being a Bank Holiday, we stage our first Family Funday of the season, one of four taking place this year. It’s an ideal opportunity for us to welcome the next generation of racegoers to Royal Windsor with free entertainment for the younger members of the family including a funfair, treasure hunt and a craft corner.

Various tickets types for future fixtures are now available online and can be reserved on our website, windsor-racecourse.co.uk Big savings are available for early bookings, while delicious meal deals and restaurant reservations can be made at the same time

The following Monday, 8 May, is also a Bank Holiday this year, marking the coronation of King Charles III, and on that day we will be staging our first evening meeting of the year, As we progress further into the summer we will remind you every week that Royal Windsor is indeed the Home of Monday Night Racing!

Once again we would like to welcome our annual members to the racecourse today. Membership of Royal Windsor is excellent value for money; besides the fixtures at our own racecourse, it includes entry to all 16 ARC courses as well as five greyhound tracks. More information is available on our website if you have not already joined us

Best Wishes

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent orm under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

WEIGHTWATCHER: THE COLA KID won off a handicap mark of 65, his rating is now down 13lb to 52.

LONGEST TRAVELLER: KYBER CRYSTAL trained by Alexandra Dunn, Wellington, 144 miles.

CONNIE’S ROSE made an encouraging seasonal reappearance at Bath earlier this month and is entitled to come on for that, she could be the answer. Provided she takes to turf, dual all-weather scorer Hannah’s Return will be a live danger, while The Princes Poet performed well on his return both last year and in 2021, and he is likely to be in the mix, too. Another for the shortlist is Big Bard, who has slipped to a dangerous mark.

A tricky finale to solve but SPARKS FLY again shaped well having conceded first run when third at Wolverhampton last month, so David Loughnane’s filly gets the nod to make a winning start on turf. Racing Demon took another step back in the right direction at Kempton last week so he could be the one to give the selection most to think about, ahead of Man Made of Smoke and Harry The Haggler
